- [00:00:04.070]Hi, my name is Joanna Reyat.
- [00:00:06.020]My name is Mona.
- [00:00:06.853]My name is Hannah Howitt.
- [00:00:07.730]My name is Lae.
- [00:00:08.563]My name is Aslyn.
- [00:00:09.770]I am a senior in the Nebraska Strong Families Lab.
- [00:00:12.460]I'm a freshman and I've worked through Fryer
- [00:00:14.090]on our first year research experience.
- [00:00:15.590]I've been a research assistant
- [00:00:17.460]for the last three semesters
- [00:00:19.610]and this semester I've been able to take on
- [00:00:21.290]the role of lead experimenter
- [00:00:22.660]along with some other members of the lab.
- [00:00:24.550]I mostly do the coding for the GoPro videos.
- [00:00:27.240]I train new students on video editing
- [00:00:29.343]and edit gift video for family participant.
- [00:00:32.580]I help run participants or help with cameras
- [00:00:36.330]and I've also video edited or coded videos
- [00:00:39.870]Leading an experimental visit with parents
- [00:00:42.440]and their children, going to the farmer's market
- [00:00:44.750]to recruit new families.
- [00:00:47.490]I've never coded
- [00:00:48.710]or done any video editing software before,
- [00:00:51.850]so that was super exciting.
- [00:00:53.310]I really like coding the videos,
- [00:00:54.890]I really like seeing how that works
- [00:00:57.100]and I've definitely learned how a lab works,
- [00:01:00.337]I'm a first generation, so I didn't know,
- [00:01:02.630]so working has definitely taught me, it's been fun.
- [00:01:05.370]My favorite part has been interacting
- [00:01:06.970]with the families directly during the in-lab visit,
- [00:01:09.890]it's a really rewarding part of being a research assistant.
- [00:01:13.090]I've also really loved learning about caregiver
- [00:01:15.950]and child attachment.
- [00:01:17.110]By editing videos, I get to see
- [00:01:19.730]what families with young children's life is like
- [00:01:22.680]in their natural environments, mainly their home.
- [00:01:26.040]I also really like getting to experience what it's like
- [00:01:30.810]to work with families in research settings.
- [00:01:33.810]I love getting to know other students.
- [00:01:36.750]It's also really fun to go to recruitment events
- [00:01:41.210]because you get to go and interact with families
- [00:01:44.860]in the community.
- [00:01:47.450]Be open to new opportunities and experiences.
- [00:01:50.060]It's very likely
- [00:01:50.893]that you will be doing stuff you haven't done
- [00:01:52.430]in a lab prior.
- [00:01:53.600]Labs aren't just about the numbers and the analyses,
- [00:01:56.450]but it's about running participants
- [00:01:58.590]and working with them firsthand
- [00:01:59.940]as well as sorting up data for data collection.
- [00:02:03.110]Don't feel like you can't ask questions.
- [00:02:05.830]I know sometimes,
- [00:02:06.730]we feel like nobody else has asked those questions
- [00:02:09.620]but we all have to start somewhere
- [00:02:11.240]and I promise everyone has started there.
- [00:02:13.420]There can be a lot of steps in the protocol
- [00:02:15.370]but it's totally fine to ask questions
- [00:02:16.980]if you ever need any help.
- [00:02:18.550]Dr. Quo does a great job of educating students
- [00:02:20.995]on the entire research process.
- [00:02:23.510]Since starting, I have learned all about research,
- [00:02:26.010]everything from the recruitment process
- [00:02:28.270]to data analysis and everything in between.
- [00:02:30.870]I totally recommend the Nebraska Strong Families Lab
- [00:02:34.110]to those that are interested in research
- [00:02:37.270]and wanted to explore why it's like
- [00:02:39.400]working in a research lab.
