- [00:00:00.750]Hey, I'm Elisa from the Explore Center.
- [00:00:03.210]It's almost time for your New Student Enrollment advising appointment. As an
- [00:00:06.960]incoming Explore Center student,
- [00:00:09.000]Here's some important information for you to know before your meeting with an
- [00:00:12.540]advisor.
- [00:00:14.580]The Explore Center is the academic advising home for all undecided, pre-health
- [00:00:19.290]pre-law students.
- [00:00:20.370]And really any student working to meet requirements for other colleges or
- [00:00:23.790]majors.
- [00:00:25.200]We have 10 academic advisors and you'll be meeting with one of them soon to talk
- [00:00:29.070]about the transition to UNL and registering for courses.
- [00:00:32.700]Here are some tips to help you prepare for your advising meeting.
- [00:00:37.140]Tip number one, come prepared with your NUID and your password.
- [00:00:41.190]This is what you've been using to log into MyRed.
- [00:00:43.560]And you'll also use this to enroll in courses either during or after our
- [00:00:47.340]meeting. Tip number two,
- [00:00:51.120]I encourage you to think about majors that you're interested in.
- [00:00:54.030]You can browse the admissions website for a full list of options,
- [00:00:57.090]and then start to narrow down some ones that you're thinking of.
- [00:01:00.210]It's helpful for us to know if you're interested in something more science
- [00:01:02.940]related, something more humanities related, that sort of thing.
- [00:01:08.490]Tip number three, let your advisor know in your meeting,
- [00:01:11.280]if you have any AP, dual enrollment, or IB credit from high school classes that
- [00:01:15.330]you might have college credit for.
- [00:01:17.160]We'll be able to chat with you a little bit more about what that applies towards
- [00:01:20.400]and how that's going to help you during your time at UNL. In addition,
- [00:01:24.330]it will be helpful if you have a list of activities, programs,
- [00:01:27.060]or involvements you're expecting to participate in
- [00:01:32.190]Tip number four, during our meeting,
- [00:01:34.410]we're probably going to mention or talk about ACE courses,
- [00:01:37.890]ACE or achievement centered education is UNL's general education program.
- [00:01:42.990]So when you've heard people talk about gen eds that they need to take in college
- [00:01:46.620]ACE is what we call those at UNL. Regardless of your major,
- [00:01:50.220]all students at UNL are going to take one class in 10 A's categories in areas
- [00:01:55.050]such as English, math, humanities, and several others.
- [00:01:59.400]So begin thinking about what types of ACE classes interest you,
- [00:02:02.670]There are ACE course options that you can find on the academic advising inventory
- [00:02:07.140]located in MyRed,
- [00:02:08.550]which you will complete before your meeting. Tip number five,
- [00:02:12.690]write down some questions to bring to our meeting,
- [00:02:15.240]write down anything you'd like to know. If we don't know the answer,
- [00:02:18.150]we know someone who does. we're here to support in any way we can,
- [00:02:21.660]as you make the transition to being a student at UNL,
- [00:02:25.620]We're so excited to meet with you and learn more about your academic goals. Have a nice day.
