- [00:00:02.970]My name is Megan Cardwell and I'm a doctoral candidate
- [00:00:05.980]in the Department of Communication Studies
- [00:00:08.820]and a graduate assistant
- [00:00:10.300]at the Office of Diversity and Inclusion at UNL.
- [00:00:13.360]I'm also a co-founder of UNL's Racial Justice Alliance
- [00:00:16.590]alongside Alexa Yunes-Koch.
- [00:00:19.190]I'm so honored to be new named
- [00:00:20.900]in inaugural Michael W. Combs Scholar for Equity and Justice
- [00:00:25.060]for so many reasons.
- [00:00:27.270]First, I'm honored to share this award
- [00:00:29.420]with three amazing scholar activists
- [00:00:31.760]including Christian Washington, Dr. Cynthia Willis Esqueda
- [00:00:35.870]who's been an incredible mentor to me
- [00:00:38.690]and who psychology of race and racism class
- [00:00:41.470]happens to be the reason why the final inaugural
- [00:00:44.610]Michael W. Combs Scholar,
- [00:00:46.470]Jordan Charlton and I even met and became friends.
- [00:00:50.610]Second, although I didn't get the pleasure
- [00:00:52.920]of meeting Dr. Combs, as an ethnic study student
- [00:00:56.510]I'm very grateful for what his 30 plus years of work
- [00:00:59.750]at this university has created from me.
- [00:01:02.630]I have had the pleasure of working with Reverend Combs wife,
- [00:01:05.730]Dr. Gwen Combs.
- [00:01:07.210]Who's always been a kind and supportive presence
- [00:01:09.530]during my time
- [00:01:10.363]working with the Office of Diversity Inclusion.
- [00:01:13.030]So to be made further proximal
- [00:01:15.340]to Reverend Dr. Michael Combs legacy in this way,
- [00:01:18.460]is profoundly special to me.
- [00:01:21.240]Finally, this is my final semester at UNL.
- [00:01:24.650]I moved here five years ago
- [00:01:26.260]not even knowing what graduate school would look like
- [00:01:28.780]or having found my activist identity yet.
- [00:01:31.830]In this summer I'll be leaving with a master's degree,
- [00:01:34.800]a PhD and an assistant professorship at Villanova University
- [00:01:39.440]in the Department of Communication.
- [00:01:41.950]And I'll have the opportunity
- [00:01:43.330]to continue the work I love to do
- [00:01:44.940]through Villanova's Intergroup Dialogue Program
- [00:01:47.730]and through the continuation of my own work and research.
- [00:01:51.440]So to leave this university with this high honor,
- [00:01:54.010]means more to me than I can express.
- [00:01:56.910]I wanna thank the Institute of Ethnic Studies,
- [00:01:59.480]the friends, family, and colleagues of Dr. Combs
- [00:02:02.530]who organized this Memorial fund,
- [00:02:04.970]to my nominator and the countless mentors and colleagues
- [00:02:08.580]that have lifted me up to do this work that I love to do.
- [00:02:12.230]And above all else,
- [00:02:13.270]I want to thank Reverend Dr. Michael Combs
- [00:02:16.020]for his scholarship and service
- [00:02:17.770]at this university and beyond.
