- [00:00:00.000]All right thank you, Ben.
- [00:00:01.220]Delighted to be joined by the chancellor
- [00:00:02.670]of the University of Nebraska, Lincoln Ronnie Green
- [00:00:04.860]baseball here in Bloomington,
- [00:00:06.570]the Husker softball team on the road this weekend
- [00:00:08.970]as well up in Madison, Wisconsin.
- [00:00:10.580]I know you've had a chance chancellor
- [00:00:12.280]to check that team out.
- [00:00:13.360]What an amazing season that they're having right now.
- [00:00:15.920]Yeah, Greg, I mean our blooming softball team,
- [00:00:18.470]is having a record year
- [00:00:21.020]and a lot of ways coming out of that sweep of the series
- [00:00:24.390]of Minnesota last weekend at home,
- [00:00:26.480]it was exciting to see them.
- [00:00:27.910]I got a chance to catch up with 'em
- [00:00:29.320]and see 'em play on Saturday when they got a big win
- [00:00:32.380]and they had that record comeback win on Sunday
- [00:00:36.170]to extend the winning streak.
- [00:00:37.570]So now they're in Madison
- [00:00:39.379]and in the series with the University of Wisconsin,
- [00:00:43.260]just really happy for the women and their success
- [00:00:46.980]and how they seem to be playing well together.
- [00:00:49.190]A tough lineup from top to bottom
- [00:00:51.720]and to see 'em break the top 25 this week,
- [00:00:55.580]and to come in
- [00:00:56.413]and just receive that well-deserved recognition.
- [00:00:59.270]And I think everyone was wondering
- [00:01:00.730]why we hadn't been there before,
- [00:01:02.260]and to see that finally happen and for Rhonda, of course,
- [00:01:05.630]who has the most wins of any coach in Husker history
- [00:01:09.550]our 30th season here in 2022.
- [00:01:12.890]So great to see the success they're having
- [00:01:15.300]and great to be with baseball today.
- [00:01:16.970]We know that great coaches are critical
- [00:01:18.690]to having a good team
- [00:01:20.790]and athletic programs are always looking for great coaches.
- [00:01:23.030]Same thing goes for your faculty
- [00:01:24.670]and they're essential to the work that the university does.
- [00:01:27.980]And recently that some of your faculty have been recognized
- [00:01:30.550]for the impact that they are making.
- [00:01:32.240]What can you tell us about that?
- [00:01:34.240]Well, Greg, no university is a great university
- [00:01:37.740]without great faculty.
- [00:01:39.170]They're really the lifeblood of every university.
- [00:01:42.670]They certainly are the lifeblood
- [00:01:44.100]of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:01:46.870]And every year, our faculty across the institution
- [00:01:50.950]receive lots and lots of awards.
- [00:01:53.840]But each year here locally,
- [00:01:57.130]the University of Nebraska system
- [00:01:59.780]recognizes from across the system outstanding excellence
- [00:02:04.110]in research and in creative activity
- [00:02:06.300]and teaching and our education mission
- [00:02:08.540]and engagement with the people of Nebraska.
- [00:02:11.520]And this has been a banner year for our UNL faculty
- [00:02:15.720]in that regard in the NU system awards
- [00:02:17.950]as they've been being announced over the last several weeks.
- [00:02:21.730]For this year, we have UNL faculty
- [00:02:24.180]that have earned five of the six longstanding awards
- [00:02:29.290]in the NU system.
- [00:02:31.020]professor Robert Brook, professor of English
- [00:02:33.440]and director of the Nebraska Writing Project
- [00:02:36.020]and Vanessa Gorman, professor of History and Classics,
- [00:02:39.020]also the chair of our Commencement Committee.
- [00:02:40.700]I spent a lot of time with Vanessa
- [00:02:43.220]on that task every year both being recognized
- [00:02:46.990]with the outstanding Teaching
- [00:02:48.230]and Instructional Creativity Award,
- [00:02:50.040]the highest teaching honor given by the NU system.
- [00:02:54.320]Then Judy Diamond, professor in University Libraries
- [00:02:57.610]and a courtesy professor of teaching learning
- [00:02:59.360]and teaching education
- [00:03:01.370]in the College of Education and Human Sciences
- [00:03:04.800]and Marks Svoboda, who is a climatologist
- [00:03:07.670]and director of our National Drought Mitigation Center
- [00:03:09.930]and our school of natural resources and INR.
- [00:03:12.990]Both received what's known as the IDEA Award.
- [00:03:16.900]IDEA is the acronym for Innovation, Development,
- [00:03:20.430]and Engagement.
- [00:03:21.290]So the engagement arm of the university
- [00:03:24.200]beyond the boundaries of the university
- [00:03:26.450]and into the state and the nation.
- [00:03:29.370]And then Jordan Stump, a professor of French
- [00:03:32.580]in our Department of Modern Languages
- [00:03:34.470]in College of Arts and Sciences,
- [00:03:36.390]is a recipient of the outstanding research
- [00:03:38.720]in Creative Activity Award.
- [00:03:40.150]The highest research and creative activity honor
- [00:03:42.880]for the NU system,
- [00:03:44.870]recognized for his national and international significance
- [00:03:48.090]in his field in French language in particular.
- [00:03:52.840]So five of the six awards in that category
- [00:03:55.640]and then a seventh awardee, new this year.
- [00:03:59.830]This is the first time the NU system
- [00:04:01.810]has presented this award.
- [00:04:03.580]And the inaugural winner of it is Shane Farritor,
- [00:04:06.750]a Professor in our Department
- [00:04:08.240]of Mechanical Materials Engineering.
- [00:04:10.560]He's the inaugural recipient of IP Innovation,
- [00:04:16.440]Intellectual Property Innovation and Commercialization Award
- [00:04:20.790]created to honor faculty who have in particular
- [00:04:24.860]had a lot of patents
- [00:04:26.120]that have been produced out of their work.
- [00:04:27.730]And trust me, Shane has had a pile of them.
- [00:04:30.600]He is the founder,
- [00:04:32.760]one of the co-founders of Virtual Incision,
- [00:04:35.140]a new robotic surgery company here
- [00:04:37.220]located in Innovation Campus that's doing great things
- [00:04:40.190]to develop the next generation of robotic surgery.
- [00:04:44.800]And he has a whole wall
- [00:04:46.420]on the Virtual Incision office of plaques,
- [00:04:49.180]recognizing the patents and provisional patents
- [00:04:52.140]that he has developed.
- [00:04:53.110]So congratulations to Shane on that award.
- [00:04:55.940]And then lastly, I'd mention also in the NU system awards
- [00:04:59.840]the University Departmental Teaching Award
- [00:05:03.030]is this year going to our Department of Children Youth
- [00:05:06.610]and Family Studies in the College of Education
- [00:05:08.760]and Human Sciences.
- [00:05:09.640]So just a banner year in terms of the NU system
- [00:05:14.790]recognizing our faculty and departments
- [00:05:17.670]for their excellence in teaching, research, and outreach
- [00:05:21.440]and now intellectual property development.
- [00:05:23.320]Boy, I'll say fantastic.
- [00:05:24.750]Congratulations to all of them.
- [00:05:25.990]And thank you so much for sharing that with us here today.
- [00:05:28.610]Enjoy the game today.
- [00:05:29.540]Big night tomorrow night at the lead
- [00:05:31.270]is gonna be tomorrow night. That's always a fun night.
- [00:05:32.530]One of my favorite nights of the year
- [00:05:34.900]when we recognize the academic accomplishments
- [00:05:37.737]and the service.
- [00:05:38.830]So many of the service accomplishments
- [00:05:40.830]of our student athletes.
- [00:05:42.690]They get a little gassed up for the night at the lead.
- [00:05:45.410]It's a formal affair,
- [00:05:47.470]and I'm really looking forward to being with them
- [00:05:50.470]and celebrating the outstanding academic
- [00:05:52.910]and service accomplishments of our student athletes.
- [00:05:55.060]Thank you for joining us today.
- [00:05:56.040]Enjoy the rest of the weekend.
- [00:05:57.870]You bet go big up.
