- [00:00:05.220]In the last video,
- [00:00:06.260]we talked about Dr. Wortman's
- [00:00:09.010]project on biodegradable plastic
- [00:00:11.180]and fabric mulch performance in field
- [00:00:13.940]and high tunnel cucumber production.
- [00:00:15.950]And one of your assignments will be to go over that article
- [00:00:19.390]and take a quiz on the information presented in it.
- [00:00:23.550]So, before you begin to look at the article,
- [00:00:26.640]it's important to become familiar
- [00:00:28.300]with how academic articles are formatted.
- [00:00:31.410]So to start, what is an academic article?
- [00:00:34.230]Well, this is how researchers publish their work,
- [00:00:37.320]and it is peer reviewed by other experts in the field.
- [00:00:40.780]And it always follows a format
- [00:00:42.770]that has seven major sections.
- [00:00:45.330]And, so those seven major sections
- [00:00:47.830]I have listed here for you
- [00:00:49.330]and throughout the video or the rest of the presentation,
- [00:00:52.610]we are going to go over those sections
- [00:00:55.320]a little bit more in detail.
- [00:00:59.260]I should add that it's important for you to understand
- [00:01:01.910]the structure of an academic article
- [00:01:04.180]because later in the semester,
- [00:01:06.070]you will write a paper following this format
- [00:01:08.860]on an experiment that you're going to conduct.
- [00:01:11.650]So, the first section is having the author,
- [00:01:14.160]or authors and title.
- [00:01:16.360]Of course, with any paper, all authors should be listed.
- [00:01:19.820]For the title,
- [00:01:20.740]it should capture the interest of the audience,
- [00:01:23.970]and it should tell what the article is about,
- [00:01:26.120]and it should be descriptive.
- [00:01:28.510]It should include what was measured,
- [00:01:30.780]in this case, biodegradable plastic
- [00:01:32.980]and fabric mulch performance.
- [00:01:35.020]So how it performed in the field,
- [00:01:37.680]and it should include the plant that is being used.
- [00:01:43.480]After the title, you will always see an abstract
- [00:01:45.970]and this summarizes the entire article.
- [00:01:48.530]It tells the overall purpose of the study,
- [00:01:50.700]how it was conducted,
- [00:01:52.340]the main findings and main conclusion.
- [00:01:54.970]It can be italicized or indented to set itself apart
- [00:01:58.210]from the remainder of the article.
- [00:02:00.300]And it's important because it can help the reader decide
- [00:02:04.170]on whether they want to continue reading
- [00:02:06.190]the rest of the article.
- [00:02:09.170]The next section will be the introduction,
- [00:02:11.290]which discusses reasoning for conducting the experiment.
- [00:02:14.480]It includes prior research
- [00:02:16.490]that is related to the same topic, includes information
- [00:02:19.910]on why readers should care about the research,
- [00:02:22.230]and contains purpose and objectives
- [00:02:24.380]for conducting the study.
- [00:02:27.790]After the introduction, will be the materials
- [00:02:29.900]and methods section,
- [00:02:30.747]and this discusses how the research was conducted.
- [00:02:34.050]And it's important that it contains all the information
- [00:02:37.000]needed to replicate the experiment.
- [00:02:39.500]And it helps to determine,
- [00:02:40.500]if the measurements taken were appropriate.
- [00:02:44.903]Next, will be the results section.
- [00:02:46.810]And this is where data is summarized.
- [00:02:48.860]It should reflect the objectives
- [00:02:50.640]in the introduction,
- [00:02:51.960]include patterns and trends in the data,
- [00:02:54.050]and include tables and figures.
- [00:02:56.030]And this can be combined with the discussion section.
- [00:02:59.290]In Dr. Wortman's paper,
- [00:03:00.900]the results and discussion section are combined,
- [00:03:03.580]but remember not all academic articles will have the results
- [00:03:07.680]in discussion together.
- [00:03:11.230]In the results section, it summarize the data.
- [00:03:15.040]And so, in the discussion section,
- [00:03:16.670]it's going to go into detail about what the results mean,
- [00:03:21.330]it's going to tell how the study coincides
- [00:03:23.310]with previous studies.
- [00:03:24.670]It's going to give suggestions on improvements
- [00:03:27.380]and on future research,
- [00:03:29.220]and how this information is important
- [00:03:31.750]to growers and producers.
- [00:03:35.600]So the conclusion relates the research
- [00:03:37.610]back to the larger context.
- [00:03:39.230]It's the take home message from the experiment.
- [00:03:42.080]Conclusions will often occur in a discussion section
- [00:03:45.820]and you'll notice in Dr. Wortman's paper,
- [00:03:47.750]it is its own section.
- [00:03:50.530]So to help readers,
- [00:03:51.840]academic article sections will always be titled.
- [00:03:57.640]The last section is the reference section.
- [00:03:59.797]And this, lists sources used in the article
- [00:04:02.650]and readers can use these references for more information,
- [00:04:06.380]and they are always written in a specific format.
- [00:04:09.040]And we will talk about that specific format
- [00:04:12.140]more in the future.
- [00:04:15.230]Now that you are familiar with the structure
- [00:04:17.860]of an academic article,
- [00:04:19.680]you are ready to take the quiz
- [00:04:21.660]on Dr. Wortman's research project,
- [00:04:24.690]research article, biodegradable plastic
- [00:04:27.060]and fabric mulch performance in field
- [00:04:29.630]and high tunnel cucumber production.
