[00:00:05.490]And as we do every game in the fall, a chance to talk
[00:00:08.180]with the University of Nebraska president, Ted Carter.

[00:00:13.850]to be back inside Memorial Stadium.
[00:00:15.400]What are your thoughts as you look at this team now
[00:00:17.730]and we start to look to another school year
[00:00:19.430]and another football season coming?
[00:00:20.540]Yeah, Greg, it's great to have everybody back
[00:00:22.730]in Memorial Stadium.
[00:00:24.144]Great weather, people feeling excited about the spring
[00:00:28.130]and excited about this football team.
[00:00:29.960]And we're gonna get a chance to see some real talent.

[00:00:35.170]some new quarterbacks that might be playing,
[00:00:37.640]new receivers and a very strong defense coming back.

[00:00:44.290]We're almost to the end of this school year, remarkably.
[00:00:46.730]It's crazy how fast these go.

[00:00:53.359]under your guidance and leadership.
[00:00:55.510]Can you share what's on your mind
[00:00:57.260]as you look back at this school year and then look forward?
[00:01:00.420]Yeah, you know I think we're through
[00:01:01.720]the worst of it.
[00:01:02.600]Obviously the pandemic is not completely over.
[00:01:05.050]We still get different variants out there
[00:01:07.450]but the trends are moving in the right direction.
[00:01:09.590]And I'm really proud of how
[00:01:10.810]we've kind of bucked the trend that we see
[00:01:13.830]in a lot of higher education institutions across the nation.
[00:01:16.980]We were able to continue to grow.
[00:01:18.550]We achieved major research successes,
[00:01:20.470]some of the highest research success money we've seen
[00:01:23.140]come into the university in our history.
[00:01:25.280]And we've kept moving forward
[00:01:26.650]despite all of these challenges.
[00:01:28.820]And I really want to give a shout out
[00:01:30.220]to our faculty and staff who really went
[00:01:32.160]above and beyond to serve our students this year
[00:01:35.370]to make sure they had
[00:01:36.203]the best educational experience possible.
[00:01:38.810]We tried to be back to pre pandemic normal,
[00:01:41.610]to the greatest extent possible,
[00:01:43.320]keeping in person classes dating all the way back
[00:01:46.050]to the fall of '20.
[00:01:47.110]I mean, people forget that we had over 70% of our classes
[00:01:50.480]in person, right out of the gate of this thing.
[00:01:52.560]And we've gotten now to where we're 100%.
[00:01:55.320]We were able to freeze tuition rates
[00:01:56.890]at all NU campuses this year.
[00:01:59.440]And we're going to do that again for next year.
[00:02:01.430]So I'm really excited about that going into '22-'23.
[00:02:04.680]Gives our family some predictability
[00:02:06.510]as they look to the future and a big win for our students.
[00:02:10.469]And then of course, we'll have an in-person commencement.
[00:02:13.490]We did that last year at Memorial Stadium,
[00:02:15.710]but we did it in two ceremonies.
[00:02:17.180]This year, the entire undergraduate ceremony's gonna be
[00:02:20.350]all at once in Memorial Stadium for the first time.
[00:02:23.200]So very exciting for Husker grads and their families.
[00:02:25.760]Oh, that is gonna be so memorable.

[00:02:28.610]Not only is the school year coming to a close
[00:02:30.940]but the legislative session also starting to wrap up.
[00:02:33.360]Can you give us a recap of where the legislature stands
[00:02:36.373]as it relates to the budget for the university?
[00:02:39.180]So as you said, the '22 legislative session
[00:02:41.490]is coming to a close.
[00:02:42.450]I'm very excited about the game changing projects
[00:02:44.970]that were included and approved in the state budget
[00:02:47.580]for some of our campuses.
[00:02:48.630]So just a couple of them, an internship grant program
[00:02:51.730]that'll benefit all of our campuses
[00:02:53.810]and ensure more students get real world experience
[00:02:56.240]before they graduate.
[00:02:57.710]This program is critical to help build our future workforce.
[00:03:01.267]$15 million for pancreatic cancer research at UNMC.
[00:03:05.228]Pancreatic cancer is a terrible disease that spreads
[00:03:08.570]without warning until it's too late.
[00:03:10.830]And with the state support, our researchers can develop
[00:03:13.260]and test new early screenings and therapies
[00:03:16.240]for this deadly disease.
[00:03:18.180]The Healthier Rural Nebraska Initiative,
[00:03:20.520]located out at Kearney at UNK will expand
[00:03:23.400]current UNMC health science programs and add new ones.
[00:03:27.220]A lot of folks probably are aware that 14
[00:03:29.420]of our Nebraska's counties don't currently have
[00:03:31.840]a primary care physician.
[00:03:33.560]And this initiative is gonna help get after that.
[00:03:36.380]Educating healthcare professionals closer to home
[00:03:38.770]will keep them at home and serve our rural communities.
[00:03:42.350]And we're gonna add $25 million to UNL
[00:03:45.230]under a state budget package to move
[00:03:47.530]the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture public-private partnership
[00:03:50.610]companion facility and innovation campus.
[00:03:53.780]So this proposed new
[00:03:54.890]Precision Agricultural Innovation Facility
[00:03:57.590]at Nebraska Innovation Campus is a once
[00:04:00.230]in a lifetime opportunity for agriculture
[00:04:02.500]and will be able to move us forward.
[00:04:04.900]I've really appreciated working with all of our partners
[00:04:07.400]in the legislature and particularly Governor Ricketts
[00:04:10.210]on the above initiatives.
[00:04:11.360]It really takes a team to win
[00:04:13.100]and I'm proud that we have such a terrific team.
[00:04:15.120]That is so exciting to hear all that
[00:04:17.170]and wonderful for all of the campuses under the system.
