Description
Rural Communities need rural community leaders to grow and thrive, but these leaders also need to be nurtured as they step into these informal and formal leadership capacities. - [00:00:00.000]Rural communities need leaders to grow and thrive.
- [00:00:03.630]That's why the Rural Prosperity Nebraska program
- [00:00:06.420]offers a framework for leadership development that
- [00:00:08.640]matches the needs and goals of these hometowns.
- [00:00:11.940]Nebraska Extension Educator Jordan Rasmussen joins
- [00:00:14.700]us now for an update on the program.
- [00:00:17.130]And Jordan, thanks for your time here this
- [00:00:18.930]morning.
- [00:00:19.230]So how does University Extension help these
- [00:00:21.870]communities build the leadership capacity?
- [00:00:25.980]Yes, so we've work right alongside those
- [00:00:27.900]communities to help build up a program and design
- [00:00:30.450]a program that looks that meets their goals and
- [00:00:32.910]needs.
- [00:00:33.570]We make sure we do this by doing this as a
- [00:00:36.060]partnership.
- [00:00:36.690]That's really important for community leadership
- [00:00:38.700]development.
- [00:00:39.210]Because we need those partnerships on the ground
- [00:00:42.060]and also that collaboration to make those pieces
- [00:00:45.180]happen.
- [00:00:46.170]Once we we've had that initial conversation with a
- [00:00:48.570]community about what they're looking for what
- [00:00:50.280]their goals and needs are, we help them design a
- [00:00:52.980]program that fits into their schedules.
- [00:00:54.900]Some communities look to offer a program on a
- [00:00:57.330]monthly basis year round.
- [00:00:59.160]Others already have existing leadership programs
- [00:01:02.010]in which they integrate some of our opportunities
- [00:01:05.220]into or there's other initiatives within the
- [00:01:07.320]community where community leadership development
- [00:01:09.390]can be integrated.
- [00:01:10.560]So those are some of the ways that we bring help
- [00:01:13.680]build that capacity in those rural communities.
- [00:01:16.350]As we're working with these communities too, we're
- [00:01:18.420]also encouraging them to think about how they're
- [00:01:21.570]incorporating youth into these programs and
- [00:01:23.550]opportunities.
- [00:01:25.050]Whether that be a high school student or a college
- [00:01:27.360]student, helping build those those younger leaders
- [00:01:30.780]right alongside those adult leaders, and helping
- [00:01:33.240]keep that generational leadership transition
- [00:01:36.690]going.
- [00:01:37.410]How have you seen these programs make a difference
- [00:01:39.900]in rural Nebraska?
- [00:01:42.360]Yes, so we, like I said, these programs are
- [00:01:45.990]individual and different in each community that we
- [00:01:48.270]work in.
- [00:01:49.170]So some communities are looking for opportunities
- [00:01:51.690]where the program participants are designing a
- [00:01:55.650]program, and they're designing a program or a
- [00:01:59.310]project opportunity.
- [00:02:00.420]And so they take it from idea and concept all the
- [00:02:03.390]way through implementation.
- [00:02:05.340]Some communities have then delivered a project
- [00:02:08.591]like a recruitment video for the community or a
- [00:02:11.912]project Park update, just an array of opportunities.
- [00:02:15.510]Other communities are looking for more direct ways
- [00:02:18.311]in which to connect community leaders, those that
- [00:02:21.057]are aspiring to be community leaders and those
- [00:02:23.638]that are currently in roles and opportunities.
- [00:02:26.220]And they provide networking opportunities to those
- [00:02:29.717]to those aspiring leaders.
- [00:02:31.500]But ultimately, when we see these community
- [00:02:33.980]leaders that their best is when they take those
- [00:02:36.685]skills that they've learned in some of the course
- [00:02:39.504]developed courses that we've offered, and how they
- [00:02:42.378]flex those skills and they're putting them to work
- [00:02:45.253]on their church council or on the extension board
- [00:02:48.071]or other nonprofits in town.
- [00:02:49.650]Or even at work or if they decide to run for an
- [00:02:53.237]office such as School Board, or County, Seat,
- [00:02:56.675]things of that nature.
- [00:02:58.860]Well, again, Jordan Rasmussen, an extension
- [00:03:00.991]educator with the Rural Prosperity Nebraska program.
- [00:03:03.510]Thank you very much for your insight this morning,
- [00:03:05.541]Jordan.
- [00:03:05.820]She's joining us from Lincoln.
