The College of Law shows how it's fulfilling N2025 Aim 4: Broadening Nebraska's Engagement. The college's Tenant Assistance Project has helped more than 1000 families.

[00:00:07.730]I think immediately about our involvement
[00:00:09.470]and really at the beginning of the Tenant Assistance Project
[00:00:12.310]here in Lincoln that has since expanded to Douglas County.
[00:00:15.720]It began with a professor
[00:00:17.100]who was worried about evictions during the pandemic
[00:00:20.140]and started following volunteering at the courthouse
[00:00:22.180]to represent tenants when they were there
[00:00:24.290]for eviction hearings.
[00:00:25.760]Before he started doing that,
[00:00:27.100]most tenants were not represented.
[00:00:29.060]And about 98% of the time, they were evicted that afternoon.
[00:00:32.850]Since he started his work and then started to partner
[00:00:35.640]with local nonprofits like Legal Aid
[00:00:38.500]and get our students involved,
[00:00:40.270]we now represent every tenant who comes into a courtroom.
[00:00:43.980]About 98% of the time flipped those tenants
[00:00:47.434]realize a negotiated resolution with their landlord
[00:00:51.220]and are able to stay in their home sometimes indefinitely,
[00:00:54.410]sometimes for three or four weeks
[00:00:55.830]to get their things organized.
[00:00:57.780]But it's changed the way landlord-tenant laws
[00:01:00.870]being practiced in Lancaster County
[00:01:03.130]to the benefit of people in the community.
[00:01:05.448]They've represented over a thousand families.
[00:01:08.194]They've helped distribute almost $10 million
[00:01:11.610]of Federal Tenant Assistance.
[00:01:13.690]And that goes to landlords
[00:01:14.820]to help tenants stay in their homes.
[00:01:16.740]So, I'm really proud of that engagement and the leadership
[00:01:20.087]of Ryan Sullivan and our faculty.
[00:01:22.500]Over 70 students have been involved in those court cases.
