[00:00:06.210]we have real expertise
[00:00:07.310]in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.
[00:00:09.690]David Harwood, for example, and his group
[00:00:12.100]are leading an international team
[00:00:15.130]that is drilling into Antarctica's past
[00:00:18.030]to help us try to understand and have a glimpse
[00:00:21.110]of what our future might be in terms of climate.
[00:00:23.670]And I know that that team along with some collaborators
[00:00:26.630]in the social sciences, political science in particular,
[00:00:29.410]are working on some grand challenge initiatives
[00:00:31.410]related to climate change.
[00:00:33.210]The Institute of Ag and Natural Resources
[00:00:35.550]has a long history and a deep expertise in climate science,
[00:00:41.270]much of that resides in our School of Natural Resources.
[00:00:45.410]The National Drought Mitigation Center, for example,
[00:00:49.310]provides weekly information through the U.S. Drought Monitor
[00:00:53.570]for the entire nation to understand,
[00:00:58.000]monitor and mitigate drought.
[00:01:01.290]They've expanded their reach and their research
[00:01:05.800]to start to look at,
[00:01:07.470]through support from the Department of Defense,
[00:01:10.460]the connection of water scarcity,
[00:01:13.660]to food scarcity, to global instability.
[00:01:17.960]National Drought Mitigation Center
[00:01:20.170]also continues to do work around of the globe,
[00:01:24.160]including in Northern Africa and the Middle East.
[00:01:27.890]This is all connected to other expertise and centers
[00:01:32.370]within the School of Natural Resources
[00:01:35.200]and the Institute of Ag and Natural Resources
[00:01:37.920]to develop innovation and new tools
[00:01:41.160]for climate-smart agriculture.
