- [00:00:00.640]Hi everyone.
- [00:00:01.600]My name is Jennifer Johnson Jorgensen, and I'm an assistant professor
- [00:00:05.000]in the Department of Textiles, Merchandizing and Fashion Design.
- [00:00:08.320]And I'm excited to share with you a little bit about the project
- [00:00:11.280]that I've been working on, trying to integrate video into an OER
- [00:00:16.280]resource for my students that are part
- [00:00:18.880]of the capstone course within our department.
- [00:00:22.080]And so with this capstone course, every student, regardless of program
- [00:00:26.600]option, takes the course and half of the course is devoted
- [00:00:31.200]to professional development for the apparel, textiles and retail industries.
- [00:00:35.360]And the other half is on trend analysis.
- [00:00:38.160]So getting students to use data to be able to project
- [00:00:42.080]what is going to be happening 30 to 50 years from now.
- [00:00:46.200]And so it's a great course, but students are always clamoring
- [00:00:50.240]for more information about professional development.
- [00:00:54.560]And so I really wanted to delve into that module first and develop
- [00:00:59.920]an OER resource that really would provide
- [00:01:03.760]different bits of information that could benefit students once they graduate.
- [00:01:08.680]And so I wanted to share the module and what it looks like with you.
- [00:01:12.840]So I'll go ahead and share my screen.
- [00:01:15.600]And of course, it looks like a typical canvas course.
- [00:01:20.000]This course is in-person.
- [00:01:22.200]However, I wanted the information for the course that OER
- [00:01:26.000]resource to be available on canvas and so these different pages
- [00:01:31.160]consist of the OER content.
- [00:01:35.960]And so I
- [00:01:37.000]have things divided by week and each week
- [00:01:40.040]I have a to do list to start off the week so students know what to expect.
- [00:01:44.960]And then we start jumping into different activities
- [00:01:49.520]available online before they come to class
- [00:01:52.640]so that they can become familiar with the content that we'll be discussing.
- [00:01:57.640]So we start off right away discussing things like resumes
- [00:02:00.920]and cover letters, kind of the typical things that we
- [00:02:05.000]want students to walk away
- [00:02:07.240]with, knowing so that they can secure a job.
- [00:02:10.400]And so we also have
- [00:02:12.680]assignments involved with this as well, of course,
- [00:02:16.440]and we have videos that we've created as a part of this OER resource.
- [00:02:21.920]And so these videos really provide the foundation for the information.
- [00:02:26.680]And overall based on student feedback.
- [00:02:29.960]Students really liked the videos.
- [00:02:32.440]Now the videos are fairly short in length.
- [00:02:35.080]And again, research says the shorter, the better So the videos
- [00:02:39.880]that we have are from about a minute to 2 minutes long.
- [00:02:44.560]So very short snippets really focused in
- [00:02:47.320]on different topics throughout the week.
- [00:02:52.400]So I'll go ahead and play this,
- [00:02:55.080]this video focusing on resumes just as an example.
- [00:02:59.360]And then afterwards, I'll share some of the challenges that I ran into as well.
- [00:03:09.720]So for a
- [00:03:11.560]creative industry, you want your résumé
- [00:03:14.720]to be a bit more expressive of your personality.
- [00:03:18.840]So we want it to have some colorful elements,
- [00:03:23.920]elements some fun graphics, like a
- [00:03:30.120]personal logo.
- [00:03:32.080]And it's so nice to be clear and concise where you could put things in your box
- [00:03:37.960]throughout the course.
- [00:03:42.440]So you can add a few different sections.
- [00:03:45.320]You can have your educational section
- [00:03:49.160]and background section of your employment history
- [00:03:53.680]relevant for that job.
- [00:03:55.880]Your contact information
- [00:03:58.120]or the personal logo that.
- [00:04:03.200]And then of course, you're going to need
- [00:04:06.080]your skills, which are both technical and soft skills.
- [00:04:10.880]And you could really use those
- [00:04:14.600]according to the job description.
- [00:04:17.280]So it's asking for a problem solver to incorporate
- [00:04:21.680]Problem-Solving into your soft skills section
- [00:04:26.240]as well as other things like communication skills writing skills.
- [00:04:32.400]And then of course, for technical things like Adobe
- [00:04:36.600]Photoshop, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint,
- [00:04:41.040]Google G Suite, Outlook, email,
- [00:04:45.120]and anything else that you like.
- [00:04:54.840]And so for each video,
- [00:05:00.680]I wanted to integrate different viewpoints from industry professionals.
- [00:05:05.880]And I also wanted to have an opportunity for students to have key takeaways.
- [00:05:12.000]So you probably saw at the end
- [00:05:13.760]there was kind of a a portion of the video that said key takeaways.
- [00:05:17.960]And then a couple of bullet points just so that students could sum up easily
- [00:05:22.720]what really the information was saying.
- [00:05:27.920]I also wanted to
- [00:05:28.680]include just a branding slide, just so that as this
- [00:05:32.920]OER resource is shared across different universities.
- [00:05:37.160]They know kind of where the origin of this is.
- [00:05:41.400]So a few challenges that I ran into with creating these videos.
- [00:05:46.280]It was fairly difficult, especially because of COVID
- [00:05:49.560]to recruit industry professionals to be able to come to campus.
- [00:05:53.960]So me trying to go out into the industry and get these interviews.
- [00:06:00.720]Kind of was the tactic that I needed to take.
- [00:06:04.040]The other thing was the audio.
- [00:06:06.520]And you probably noticed
- [00:06:07.800]when the videos started playing, there's kind of this white noise in the background
- [00:06:12.720]I tried a lot of different things to try to cut down on that white noise,
- [00:06:18.440]and I just couldn't find a good way to do that.
- [00:06:22.840]I tried lapel microphones
- [00:06:25.200]or a regular microphone, and it just wasn't working.
- [00:06:28.880]However, I did want the flexibility of not being in a studio
- [00:06:34.400]so that I could reach the industry professional more easily.
- [00:06:38.520]So overall, some challenges to think about if you're hoping to integrate
- [00:06:43.960]this kind of a video within your OER resource.
- [00:06:47.800]And I also wanted to share with you
- [00:06:50.520]the video editing software that I used.
- [00:06:53.600]And I was really impressed with this editing software.
- [00:06:57.080]Some of you might be familiar with it already,
- [00:07:00.320]but Magisto is fantastic,
- [00:07:03.120]it's really easy to use, very intuitive.
- [00:07:06.520]And I just can't say enough good stuff about it.
- [00:07:09.760]So I wanted to share it with you.
- [00:07:11.000]And this is basically the start of your video.
- [00:07:13.520]And you can just click Add Media
- [00:07:15.600]and you can find different stock photos if you need.
- [00:07:19.720]You can also upload pictures.
- [00:07:22.560]You can upload your video clips.
- [00:07:26.040]And once you do that, you can just
- [00:07:30.080]click upload, and that process will start.
- [00:07:33.640]So I'm going to just click on a few things and click ADD.
- [00:07:38.080]And then from there, you'll just click next
- [00:07:41.400]and you'll choose kind of the vibe that you want your video to have.
- [00:07:46.000]And so these are all of the different options.
- [00:07:48.480]And you can kind of go through and see which one has kind
- [00:07:52.760]of the look that you're going for.
- [00:07:55.880]Once you identify that and you choose music
- [00:08:00.600]So go choose this one sounds upbeat and then click preview.
- [00:08:05.720]And this is where Magisto starts taking what it thinks
- [00:08:10.880]is important from the clip and starts piecing it together
- [00:08:14.120]along with the pictures that you've included.
- [00:08:17.680]And once the video is done, you can move around the pictures,
- [00:08:21.720]you can edit the video clip however you need.
- [00:08:25.800]And overall, just incredibly intuitive
- [00:08:30.520]So please let me
- [00:08:32.400]know if you have any questions about this if you haven't used it before.
- [00:08:36.800]Also, if you have any tips for me, please let me know that as well.
- [00:08:40.840]And I hope to hear from you.
- [00:08:43.320]Thank you so much.
