- [00:00:06.172]Because of the students.
- [00:00:07.707]I don't want to require the students
- [00:00:10.727]to buy very expensive textbooks.
- [00:00:14.130]Maybe they are in
- [00:00:17.067]difficult financial status.
- [00:00:18.835]You never know.
- [00:00:19.919]So I just don't feel good to require them
- [00:00:23.039]to buy textbooks.
- [00:00:27.861]Yeah, I believe so.
- [00:00:29.696]I actually converted my textbooks into
- [00:00:33.233]OER for two different courses.
- [00:00:35.852]The two courses are very different,
- [00:00:37.921]but I think the
- [00:00:42.000]conversion to OER
- [00:00:43.315]was a very smooth process
- [00:00:44.928]for both courses.
- [00:00:47.291]I believe every instructor,
- [00:00:49.532]before they teach any class,
- [00:00:51.868]there should be a process
- [00:00:53.219]for them to
- [00:00:54.551]completely understand
- [00:00:55.948]the textbook.
- [00:00:57.390]To thoroughly read the textbook
- [00:00:59.209]and then convert the textbook materials
- [00:01:01.828]and into their own materials.
- [00:01:03.596]It's during this process,
- [00:01:04.998]that we can create OER materials.
- [00:01:11.821]I think I was surprised
- [00:01:13.223]that it was quite a smooth process.
- [00:01:16.910]Much better,
- [00:01:18.745]much easier than I thought.
- [00:01:21.831]And also the
- [00:01:23.333]grad students
- [00:01:24.417]and the undergrad students
- [00:01:25.919]both helped me during this process.
- [00:01:33.293]Yeah, the students' feedback
- [00:01:34.697]was very important.
- [00:01:36.896]It was great
- [00:01:38.089]because
- [00:01:39.522]when I
- [00:01:41.393]convert
- [00:01:41.968]the textbook materials
- [00:01:43.253]into OER materials,
- [00:01:44.643]I'm not quite sure
- [00:01:46.139]which part I should focus on,
- [00:01:48.721]which part I should modify
- [00:01:50.660]and which part I should ignore.
- [00:01:52.796]And the student's
- [00:01:53.480]feedback was really helpful because
- [00:01:56.666]if they give me some great feedback,
- [00:01:58.785]I felt like this part was well taught
- [00:02:02.455]and if they
- [00:02:04.766]have a lot of questions
- [00:02:06.242]or they had a difficult time
- [00:02:08.011]understanding the material.
- [00:02:09.295]I know that this part should be modified
- [00:02:15.568]I'm not sure because
- [00:02:17.812]it really depends.
- [00:02:18.721]But for me,
- [00:02:20.216]the OER material
- [00:02:21.691]is really better than the textbook
- [00:02:23.543]because it
- [00:02:24.210]uniquely fits my teaching style.
- [00:02:27.497]It fits my
- [00:02:29.507]expertize,
- [00:02:31.172]my,
- [00:02:31.851]you know,
- [00:02:32.268]I believe
- [00:02:32.936]every instructor has its
- [00:02:35.447]weakness and
- [00:02:36.489]strength has their own
- [00:02:37.607]teaching style.
- [00:02:38.808]The OER material was created by myself,
- [00:02:41.728]so it uniquely fits my
- [00:02:45.782]my teaching style.
- [00:02:47.550]So, you know, for me it's
- [00:02:49.285]definitely better than the textbook
- [00:02:56.392]After I,
- [00:02:57.761]you know,
- [00:02:58.261]converted two textbooks
- [00:03:00.113]into OER materials,
- [00:03:01.497]I definitely believe
- [00:03:03.566]it's a measure that fits every instructor.
- [00:03:07.770]So every instructor potentially could
- [00:03:10.940]convert their textbook
- [00:03:12.408]into OER materials.
- [00:03:13.760]I believe that was a great
- [00:03:17.148]opportunity for me
- [00:03:18.231]to better understand the
- [00:03:20.667]course materials.
- [00:03:21.901]I really encourage everyone
- [00:03:23.603]to try this approach.
