- [00:00:05.538]I had a
- [00:00:06.022]couple of
- [00:00:06.539]different ways
- [00:00:07.374]for why I wanted to use OER.
- [00:00:09.893]And I think the first reason
- [00:00:11.478]was because I wanted students
- [00:00:12.779]to be able to save some money.
- [00:00:14.664]Textbooks are so, so expensive,
- [00:00:17.567]and it just didn't make sense
- [00:00:18.902]for students
- [00:00:19.619]to be buying textbooks
- [00:00:21.471]that they might not even use.
- [00:00:23.807]So I wanted students to be able
- [00:00:25.458]to have access
- [00:00:26.242]to the content
- [00:00:26.993]without actually having to pay
- [00:00:28.428]that amount of money.
- [00:00:29.996]And then the other reason
- [00:00:31.498]why I wanted to use OER
- [00:00:33.349]was because OER is more flexible.
- [00:00:36.052]And I feel like with courses
- [00:00:38.822]that need to be updated frequently,
- [00:00:41.241]we just need to be able
- [00:00:42.325]to have that flexibility
- [00:00:43.643]to provide that information easily.
- [00:00:49.349]I believe that OER could be
- [00:00:50.934]for everyone.
- [00:00:52.168]I feel like it takes some time
- [00:00:54.270]to be able to create
- [00:00:55.338]OER resources
- [00:00:56.456]or to be able to find and alter
- [00:00:58.541]OER resources,
- [00:01:00.210]but ultimately it's well worth the time.
- [00:01:03.213]So I do believe that everyone should look
- [00:01:05.849]into OER opportunities
- [00:01:07.967]and see if that would be right
- [00:01:09.152]for the courses that they teach.
- [00:01:11.304]And again, the flexibility that OER
- [00:01:13.823]provides definitely helps just create
- [00:01:17.627]course content and create excitement
- [00:01:19.562]among students about the course content.
- [00:01:25.969]The thing that surprised
- [00:01:27.003]me the most about OER
- [00:01:28.788]is that students
- [00:01:29.823]actually recognized
- [00:01:31.141]that I was trying
- [00:01:31.975]to save them money
- [00:01:32.959]by providing these OER resources.
- [00:01:36.062]And I wouldn't have guessed that
- [00:01:37.380]just because students
- [00:01:39.082]hadn't taken my course before.
- [00:01:41.301]And they realized that they had access
- [00:01:44.521]to free resources
- [00:01:45.805]during that particular semester.
- [00:01:48.091]So students were recognizing
- [00:01:49.609]that I was trying
- [00:01:50.477]to provide content for them
- [00:01:52.854]that was free
- [00:01:53.730]and that was easily accessible
- [00:01:56.249]wherever they were located.
- [00:01:58.468]So I just feel like
- [00:02:00.720]students recognize it,
- [00:02:01.921]and it's something that
- [00:02:03.773]every instructor should really consider
- [00:02:06.059]to be able to support students.
- [00:02:12.682]So within
- [00:02:13.166]my course,
- [00:02:13.950]I received
- [00:02:14.667]feedback directly
- [00:02:15.952]and indirectly.
- [00:02:17.637]Directly
- [00:02:18.421]I had students
- [00:02:19.556]fill out a survey
- [00:02:20.540]after they were exposed
- [00:02:21.691]to different elements of OER.
- [00:02:24.060]And with that survey,
- [00:02:26.462]I was able to determine
- [00:02:27.680]what was the most helpful
- [00:02:28.882]for students.
- [00:02:30.300]And students
- [00:02:30.950]in my course
- [00:02:31.668]indicated that they really loved videos
- [00:02:34.220]and they loved learning from those videos
- [00:02:35.989]and watching those videos.
- [00:02:37.640]And then they also really loved
- [00:02:39.843]just the flexibility
- [00:02:41.477]of being able
- [00:02:42.362]to watch different things at
- [00:02:43.580]different times.
- [00:02:45.481]The thing that they wanted the most
- [00:02:47.239]were more guest speakers.
- [00:02:48.918]So that's something
- [00:02:49.652]I definitely will integrate more
- [00:02:51.721]into different OER
- [00:02:52.705]resources in the future.
- [00:02:57.660]I believe that OER
- [00:02:59.034]is of much higher quality
- [00:03:01.314]than a published textbook,
- [00:03:03.116]and it's because
- [00:03:04.241]people can build on one
- [00:03:05.668]another's knowledge
- [00:03:06.953]to create the best resource possible.
- [00:03:10.106]Also,
- [00:03:11.218]it's
- [00:03:11.875]something that has a lot of flexibility.
- [00:03:14.811]So things can be altered
- [00:03:16.012]as things change.
- [00:03:17.997]So for example,
- [00:03:19.402]in one of my courses,
- [00:03:21.217]course content changes
- [00:03:22.669]all of the time
- [00:03:23.987]due to different changes
- [00:03:25.772]in current events
- [00:03:26.573]and those types of things.
- [00:03:28.157]So with OER, I can easily change
- [00:03:30.977]different things
- [00:03:32.011]depending on what's happening
- [00:03:37.200]So within my OER project, I had a Ph.D.
- [00:03:40.270]student that helped me create content
- [00:03:43.823]that graduates student, helped me
- [00:03:45.775]create video content
- [00:03:47.759]specifically
- [00:03:49.379]and that particular graduate student
- [00:03:51.864]also helped me edit videos
- [00:03:54.767]and just help find different resources.
- [00:03:58.888]It was great to have the graduate student
- [00:04:01.291]involved in this project
- [00:04:03.176]just because she was able
- [00:04:04.494]to be exposed to curriculum development
- [00:04:07.046]as well as OER development.
- [00:04:09.749]So she has some great things
- [00:04:11.100]that she can put on her CV
- [00:04:12.952]and she hopes to ultimately go into
- [00:04:16.189]a research one institution
- [00:04:18.408]and be a professor at that institution.
- [00:04:20.660]So it's some great experiences
- [00:04:22.729]that she can share
- [00:04:23.997]in her next opportunity
- [00:04:30.803]The one thing that
- [00:04:32.221]I think
- [00:04:32.872]everyone should be thinking about with
- [00:04:34.474]OER is it is easier to do than
- [00:04:38.728]you think at the outset of the project.
- [00:04:42.048]And it's really fun.
- [00:04:44.217]It's really fun
- [00:04:45.201]to be
- [00:04:46.202]creative
- [00:04:46.970]in how you deliver content to students,
- [00:04:49.639]and it's so much fun to think
- [00:04:51.557]about how students will interact
- [00:04:53.092]with that content
- [00:04:54.377]and how much they will appreciate
- [00:04:56.245]saving that extra money
- [00:04:58.348]from not buying a textbook.
