- [00:00:02.010]Emily Frenzen remembers going home
- [00:00:04.170]for Spring Break three years ago
- [00:00:06.400]and getting her first look at the damage
- [00:00:08.770]on her family's farm near Fullerton.
- [00:00:11.540]Assessing the damage was just kinda the first step
- [00:00:14.160]because we didn't know what it would be.
- [00:00:16.230]So I rode in the passenger seat
- [00:00:18.280]with my dad for a lot of that week.
- [00:00:20.320]And I had my camera with me.
- [00:00:23.030]She captured the experience in her camera
- [00:00:25.860]and the photos became a video for a class in storytelling.
- [00:00:29.952](soothing music)
- [00:00:33.130]The flood actually started Wednesday morning.
- [00:00:36.060]It worsened throughout the day.
- [00:00:38.880]I think the biggest thing I learned
- [00:00:40.030]from putting that story together
- [00:00:40.980]is how healing storytelling is.
- [00:00:42.860]I had no idea until actually experiencing it,
- [00:00:45.340]but I think it was healing for my family,
- [00:00:48.040]but also a lot of other people
- [00:00:49.320]because they played that video at the Nebraska State Fair.
- [00:00:52.160]The summer of 2019 was spent clearing sand
- [00:00:54.900]and debris from the fields
- [00:00:56.480]and wondering what the future held.
- [00:00:58.710]We didn't really know what to expect, honestly.
- [00:01:01.660]because we've never had to deal
- [00:01:03.260]with a quantity of sand like that on our fields.
- [00:01:06.880]Nebraska Extension provided information
- [00:01:09.540]on restoring flooded fields
- [00:01:11.470]and coordinated donations of hay and other supplies.
- [00:01:15.350]It was pretty humbling to see
- [00:01:17.970]not only all these donations coming in,
- [00:01:19.800]but then Extension's ability to be able to one,
- [00:01:24.810]give us the help, but not to worry
- [00:01:26.180]about what time of day it was,
- [00:01:27.450]or if it was a weekend.
- [00:01:29.030]They were just always there.
- [00:01:31.210]With time and hard work,
- [00:01:33.010]the farm has recovered,
- [00:01:34.610]but the Frenzens will never forget the experience
- [00:01:37.440]and the importance of community.
- [00:01:39.860]I think there's purpose in the pain and the suffering.
- [00:01:44.030]And I think community shines through that.
- [00:01:46.540]And I also think there's a strong theme of resiliency.
