The College of Journalism and Mass Communications shows how it is fulfilling N2025 Aim 1: Innovative Student Experiences. The college launched its Experience Lab, giving every student practical experience in their area of study.

[00:00:03.190]In the College of Journalism and Mass Communications,
[00:00:05.610]we launched the college-wide Experience Lab this last fall,
[00:00:09.720]where every one of our students coming into the college
[00:00:12.890]will spend at least five hours a week working
[00:00:14.890]in one of our student run agencies or media areas.
[00:00:19.550]So that means that by next fall
[00:00:22.590]when it moves into a requirement,
[00:00:24.020]students will spend at least three semesters
[00:00:26.620]in one of those experience labs.
[00:00:28.380]And each lab is headed up by two student leads
[00:00:31.800]with the faculty liaison
[00:00:33.630]and then professionals in residence
[00:00:35.430]who worked directly with those students.
[00:00:37.410]So this fall, we had 90 students
[00:00:40.040]and 14 professionals in residence.
[00:00:42.550]This spring, we're at 120 students working
[00:00:45.870]in the Experience Lab with 21 professionals in residence.
[00:00:49.530]By the time this is fully implemented,
[00:00:51.450]we'll have at least 600 students each semester
[00:00:54.660]spending time working with Nebraska News Service,
[00:00:57.630]Nebraska Nightly, KRNU, our student run radio station,
[00:01:01.390]one of to agencies, Yatch and Buoy, Heartland Webzine,
[00:01:05.270]also UNLimited sports.
[00:01:06.600]With next fall, we'll be launching Production House
[00:01:10.180]which will be focusing on live streaming, photography
[00:01:12.810]and videography from across campus.
[00:01:14.950]And the whole idea is to get students in,
[00:01:17.240]give them the opportunity to experiment,
[00:01:19.290]to play, to fail, to fall in love with media.
