- [00:00:04.800]To everyone in our Husker community,
- [00:00:07.060]welcome back from spring break.
- [00:00:09.610]Whether you had an opportunity to catch up
- [00:00:11.520]with family and friends, catch up on some much needed rest,
- [00:00:15.340]or enjoy some sun, or maybe even some snow,
- [00:00:18.790]I hope you enjoyed the chance to disconnect for a bit
- [00:00:21.715]and to come back refreshed
- [00:00:23.770]and ready to finish the semester strong.
- [00:00:26.544]Two years ago in 2020,
- [00:00:29.780]our faculty spent spring break working tirelessly
- [00:00:32.880]to shift all of our classes at UNL to remote instruction.
- [00:00:37.299]They, and our staff and students,
- [00:00:39.819]continued to successfully navigate the ups and downs
- [00:00:43.275]of this global pandemic.
- [00:00:46.040]It's been a long two years.
- [00:00:48.122]For many of you, this spring break
- [00:00:50.900]may have been the closest you felt to normal
- [00:00:53.600]in what feels like a very long time.
- [00:00:56.500]At the beginning of this semester,
- [00:00:58.540]we were bracing for a wave of new infections
- [00:01:01.070]posed of Omicron variant.
- [00:01:03.640]Thank you to all of you for testing,
- [00:01:06.141]for getting vaccinated and boosted,
- [00:01:08.990]for wearing a face covering,
- [00:01:10.710]and for everything you did to help keep our community safe.
- [00:01:14.960]We managed through that surge remarkably well,
- [00:01:18.101]as we have during the entire pandemic,
- [00:01:21.450]thanks to all lot of hard work, grace, and goodwill.
- [00:01:25.040]Omicron has receded as rapidly as it sprung
- [00:01:29.760]and our country and the world are opening up to an extent
- [00:01:32.840]we haven't yet seen in the pandemic.
- [00:01:35.563]And while the COVID 19 virus continues to evolve,
- [00:01:39.115]the CDC will continue to closely monitor
- [00:01:42.019]any possibilities of a new wave.
- [00:01:45.517]That is wonderful, welcome news.
- [00:01:48.370]And it's an opportunity to safely let down
- [00:01:50.890]some of the guardrails we put up during the pandemic.
- [00:01:54.451]I know this may be unsettling for some,
- [00:01:57.474]the threat of a potentially deadly virus
- [00:02:00.360]has been part of our lives for two years.
- [00:02:03.431]Throughout the pandemic we made our decisions
- [00:02:06.700]to safeguard our campus based on science, data,
- [00:02:10.006]and the advice of our public health officials.
- [00:02:13.620]Science has given us many tools to fight this virus,
- [00:02:17.040]effective vaccines, better monitoring and treatments
- [00:02:20.540]to lessen the impact of the disease.
- [00:02:23.500]We will continue to be guided by the science,
- [00:02:26.610]data, and our public health experts.
- [00:02:29.541]In the near future, we expect Lancaster County
- [00:02:32.947]to be able to move into a green category,
- [00:02:36.180]signifying a minimal risk of COVID 19.
- [00:02:39.952]At that time, any remaining requirements for face coverings
- [00:02:44.280]in specific classroom settings, will be lifted.
- [00:02:47.980]There still may be very valid reasons
- [00:02:50.280]for someone to choose to wear a face covering.
- [00:02:53.130]They may have a compromised immune system
- [00:02:55.600]or live with someone who does.
- [00:02:58.090]They may have a cold
- [00:02:59.300]and simply not want someone else to get it.
- [00:03:01.547]They may be part of a culture where mask wearing,
- [00:03:04.500]especially in cold and flu season is widely accepted.
- [00:03:09.240]Whatever their choice, please continue to be respectful
- [00:03:13.110]of their personal decision.
- [00:03:14.840]And if someone asks you to wear a face covering,
- [00:03:17.717]please understand they have a good reason
- [00:03:20.229]and be thoughtful in your response.
- [00:03:23.453]We are in a very different place than we were two years ago
- [00:03:27.780]and thank goodness that we are.
- [00:03:29.960]And thank you for your goodness.
- [00:03:32.610]We seek to be a university community where every person
- [00:03:36.020]and every interaction matters.
- [00:03:38.400]Nowhere has that been more evident than in our response
- [00:03:41.578]to each other during this pandemic.
- [00:03:44.778]Once again, welcome back, finish strong and go big red.
