- [00:00:00.000]I learned a lot
- [00:00:00.967]in my 18 years in um
- [00:00:03.003]uh Lincoln Public Schools,
- [00:00:04.137]but also I had two years in
- [00:00:05.071]Minneapolis Public Schools.
- [00:00:07.040]And I really want to help
- [00:00:09.843]um young
- [00:00:10.777]special education teachers
- [00:00:13.413]do their very best work that they can do,
- [00:00:15.682]and feel prepared.
- [00:00:17.150]Because it's a
- [00:00:17.884]it's a big challenge.
- [00:00:18.985]It's a very challenging position
- [00:00:20.653]and I want, um
- [00:00:22.522]to, I want students
- [00:00:23.790]to choose special education.
- [00:00:25.425]I want them to want
- [00:00:26.693]special education positions,
- [00:00:27.994]and also know what to do once they get there.
- [00:00:30.930]But I'm also, um
- [00:00:32.832]learning a lot about research
- [00:00:34.134]and I'm also very interested in um
- [00:00:36.803]math research so we can
- [00:00:38.638]get more kids to graduate from high school
- [00:00:40.240]who have IEPs because
- [00:00:42.208]math is a big struggle.
- [00:00:43.810]Like I said, teacher preparation is a
- [00:00:45.412]huge interest of mine,
- [00:00:46.713]but also contributing to
- [00:00:48.548]the research base, um
- [00:00:50.183]for students with
- [00:00:51.618]um, difficulties, um like
- [00:00:53.186]kind of persistent difficulties in different areas
- [00:00:55.422]with learning,
- [00:00:56.689]and/or actually verified with disabilities.
- [00:00:59.592]Um what I'm learning since I got
- [00:01:01.261]here is that
- [00:01:02.262]um, there's not
- [00:01:03.696]as much of a research base
- [00:01:05.565]for math
- [00:01:06.332]for students who persistently struggle
- [00:01:08.601]with math and have difficulties in that area.
- [00:01:11.438]So, I really want to contribute
- [00:01:14.707]to that research base.
- [00:01:15.909]We need to find out more about
- [00:01:17.377]why students are not learning,
- [00:01:19.312]what kind of
- [00:01:20.280]teaching they need,
- [00:01:21.214]what interventions they need.
- [00:01:22.949]And that's what I'll
- [00:01:23.917]be doing
- [00:01:24.551]ultimately for my dissertation is
- [00:01:26.286]creating a math intervention
- [00:01:28.755]for students who are struggling in math
- [00:01:31.124]so they can get
- [00:01:32.058]caught up and understand and
- [00:01:34.027]feel successful in math and um
- [00:01:36.396]and then
- [00:01:37.063]and be able to move forward with their lives.
