- [00:00:01.360]hi everyone we are the project energy
- [00:00:04.000]emissions education group working with
- [00:00:06.000]grand island and norfolk
- [00:00:07.839]kate myself and jonah were all involved
- [00:00:10.559]in the project as well as ICLEI and
- [00:00:12.559]conservation nebraska
- [00:00:14.480]over the course of the semester our work
- [00:00:16.320]is primarily focused on understanding
- [00:00:18.400]and finding solutions for emissions
- [00:00:20.080]related problems in grand island and
- [00:00:22.560]norfolk
- [00:00:27.199]as a whole nebraska has faced a variety
- [00:00:29.359]of damaging environmental consequences
- [00:00:31.760]as a result of climate change in the
- [00:00:33.360]region
- [00:00:34.480]issues like poor crop yields flooding
- [00:00:36.960]industrial runoff and severe storms have
- [00:00:39.760]all wreaked havoc on the environmental
- [00:00:41.360]health in the midwest over the past
- [00:00:43.120]decade however many nebraskans
- [00:00:45.760]especially those in rural areas do not
- [00:00:48.160]believe climate change is an immediate
- [00:00:50.000]concern
- [00:00:52.000]these same nebraskans do not see climate
- [00:00:53.840]change as an issue that has relevance to
- [00:00:56.320]their daily life or to their potential
- [00:00:58.559]prosperity in the future
- [00:01:04.879]to complete this project we worked with
- [00:01:06.799]ICLEI and conservation nebraska. ICLEI
- [00:01:09.600]is a network of local governments that
- [00:01:11.920]work to promote sustainability within
- [00:01:14.159]urban development these local
- [00:01:16.080]governments can range from the united
- [00:01:17.759]states to the world as a whole
- [00:01:20.640]conservation nebraska is a local
- [00:01:22.479]organization that strives to educate the
- [00:01:24.320]public about environmental concerns
- [00:01:26.320]within the region
- [00:01:28.080]by working closely with ICLEI and
- [00:01:29.680]conservation nebraska
- [00:01:32.159]representatives we established a goal to
- [00:01:34.079]not only educate the public about the
- [00:01:36.159]issue of greenhouse gas emissions
- [00:01:39.119]but to also develop a better
- [00:01:40.799]understanding of the values and concerns
- [00:01:43.200]of residents in grand island norfolk and
- [00:01:46.000]rural nebraska as a whole
- [00:01:51.200]to accomplish this we sought to achieve
- [00:01:53.600]three sets of goals and objectives
- [00:01:56.159]first we hope to discover what
- [00:01:57.840]transportation
- [00:01:59.200]related issues are prioritized by the
- [00:02:01.200]community
- [00:02:02.399]in order to do this we developed an
- [00:02:04.240]eight question survey regarding
- [00:02:05.840]transportation related emissions that
- [00:02:08.239]was distributed to grant island and
- [00:02:10.080]norfolk residents
- [00:02:12.000]second we wanted to communicate the unl
- [00:02:14.480]and community partnerships and the
- [00:02:16.800]results of the survey to the public
- [00:02:19.520]to do so
- [00:02:20.959]we
- [00:02:21.760]wrote a short press release discussing
- [00:02:24.239]our project and the results of the
- [00:02:26.160]survey that we hoped to publish on the
- [00:02:28.160]unl website
- [00:02:30.160]lastly we sought to create informational
- [00:02:32.640]material to increase public awareness of
- [00:02:34.800]carbon emissions as well as our project
- [00:02:38.480]to accomplish this goal we created an
- [00:02:40.720]informational digital flyer discussing
- [00:02:43.040]transportation related emissions that we
- [00:02:45.599]plan to distribute to grand island and
- [00:02:47.599]norfolk residents
- [00:02:53.120]the survey we created consisted of eight
- [00:02:55.519]questions in a digital format
- [00:02:57.760]the questions ask participants to rank
- [00:02:59.760]what transportation related issues they
- [00:03:01.840]value what they would like to see more
- [00:03:03.840]of and how their current community
- [00:03:05.840]transit
- [00:03:06.800]can be improved
- [00:03:08.400]our press release was a short
- [00:03:09.840]description of our semester-long project
- [00:03:12.080]in which we provided quotes
- [00:03:14.159]from ICLEI and conservation nebraska
- [00:03:16.319]representatives
- [00:03:18.080]we hope to publish this press release on
- [00:03:20.159]the unl website
- [00:03:22.640]environmental studies webpage
- [00:03:24.799]our digital flyer consists of background
- [00:03:27.360]information regarding carbon emissions
- [00:03:30.159]as well as transportation related
- [00:03:31.920]content this flyer will provide
- [00:03:34.080]additional information to community
- [00:03:36.000]residents and will be distributed to the
- [00:03:38.480]same recipients as our initial
- [00:03:40.239]transportation
- [00:03:41.680]survey
- [00:03:44.640]from our survey we found that 88 of
- [00:03:47.440]residents agree that reducing
- [00:03:49.120]transportation related emissions
- [00:03:51.280]would go a long way in benefiting public
- [00:03:53.280]health
- [00:03:54.319]additionally most residents value better
- [00:03:56.640]public transit and improve traffic flow
- [00:03:59.519]however because we have a limited number
- [00:04:01.439]of responses i believe it was only
- [00:04:03.680]around 25 out of the 200 we were hoping
- [00:04:06.319]to get
- [00:04:07.280]it's probably too soon to draw
- [00:04:09.040]conclusions from any of our data
- [00:04:11.360]because of this we're planning on
- [00:04:12.799]keeping our survey open throughout next
- [00:04:14.400]semester to allow for the next project
- [00:04:16.639]team to take over our work and to
- [00:04:18.720]receive a greater amount of data
- [00:04:21.040]from both communities
- [00:04:24.960]overall our current data suggests that
- [00:04:27.040]residents greatly value traffic flow
- [00:04:29.680]wider streets improved traffic signals
- [00:04:31.919]and the potential for additional bus
- [00:04:33.680]lanes
- [00:04:34.800]residents also appear to value road
- [00:04:36.560]quality a reduction of traffic
- [00:04:38.240]congestion and the addition of more wiki
- [00:04:41.440]biking and walking paths within their
- [00:04:43.600]communities
- [00:04:45.040]however while residents agree that
- [00:04:46.720]reducing carbon emissions and improved
- [00:04:48.639]transit systems would benefit them
- [00:04:50.400]personally
- [00:04:51.600]the reduction of these greenhouse gas
- [00:04:53.360]emissions is not a top value among most
- [00:04:55.919]residents
- [00:04:57.040]i believe it placed fourth on our survey
- [00:05:00.400]because of this we believe additional
- [00:05:02.400]education initiatives would go a long
- [00:05:04.639]way in helping residents to better
- [00:05:06.400]understand the issue of sustainability
- [00:05:09.600]and potentially create stronger
- [00:05:11.120]community support for future
- [00:05:13.280]environmental projects
- [00:05:18.240]here's a list of all our references that
- [00:05:20.639]helped us to achieve our work this
- [00:05:22.639]semester
- [00:05:26.320]and if you have any questions regarding
- [00:05:28.720]our work uh on this project as a whole
- [00:05:31.120]this entire semester or specifically our
- [00:05:34.000]survey
- [00:05:35.039]our press release or our digital flyer
- [00:05:38.720]feel free to take the time to ask us
- [00:05:40.479]those questions
