- [00:00:00.000]While I was taking classes
- [00:00:01.568]at undergrad,
- [00:00:02.869]I kind of switched gears
- [00:00:04.571]to being interested in working in academia.
- [00:00:06.873]And so I kind of took a back
- [00:00:08.541]way approach into academia and research
- [00:00:11.111]because I'm like,
- [00:00:11.711]'Oh, I think I'd like to be a teacher to these types of students.'
- [00:00:14.914]um
- [00:00:16.149]And I ended up learning,
- [00:00:17.584]'Oh, you're going to have to do research.
- [00:00:19.119]You're going to need a Ph.D.'
- [00:00:20.553]Finding a Ph.D. mentor is
- [00:00:21.921]kind of at an individual basis.
- [00:00:23.523]And right away,
- [00:00:24.657]I connected with Dr. Dietsch.
- [00:00:26.393]I was super impressed with her
- [00:00:28.495]um
- [00:00:29.729]résumé, all the
- [00:00:31.131]things, really cool things that she's doing and also the
- [00:00:33.500]facilities at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:00:35.869]specifically the Center for Brain, Biology and Behavior,
- [00:00:39.205]in which a lot of kind of translational neuro-
- [00:00:42.008]like, scientists
- [00:00:43.243]of a variety of different fields are kind of
- [00:00:46.212]using neuroimaging
- [00:00:47.480]to kind of, uh, answer some
- [00:00:49.616]questions in their field.
- [00:00:51.084]And I thought that was really cool
- [00:00:52.585]and a very big advantage to coming here.
- [00:00:54.821]So, I am
- [00:00:57.123]investigating what type
- [00:00:58.892]of rehabilitation approach
- [00:01:00.660]might be most
- [00:01:01.995]efficacious to
- [00:01:03.630]um, recover swallow function after a stroke.
- [00:01:07.367]Uh, and I'm using
- [00:01:09.869]um, a variety of different
- [00:01:11.538]outcome measures with swallowing and with neuroimaging
- [00:01:14.107]so we're looking at a lot of things how the brain might
- [00:01:16.409]recover and respond to, uh, these interventions.
- [00:01:19.579]Um, ultimately to 1) kind of help
- [00:01:22.816]uh, these people recover from
- [00:01:24.751]dysphagia or impaired swallowing;
- [00:01:26.319]also 2) to help kind of give, uh,
- [00:01:29.022]insight to the research literature of what might be
- [00:01:31.858]best to
- [00:01:33.026]like what option might be best
- [00:01:34.360]to help people recover their swallow function.
- [00:01:36.429]I would really love to continue
- [00:01:39.265]a similar line of research of kind of bringing in
- [00:01:42.168]aspects of neuroimaging and kind of, uh,
- [00:01:45.305]instruments and tools and
- [00:01:47.040]working with people with different expertise as to how
- [00:01:49.742]um, we could
- [00:01:50.844]keep helping answer some
- [00:01:52.745]questions we still have in speech-language pathology.
- [00:01:55.515]And, uh, possibly a shift
- [00:01:57.851]to working within the pediatric population, specifically
- [00:02:00.854]premature infants.
- [00:02:02.122]I also am, uh, very interested and also
- [00:02:04.757]the University of Nebraska-Lincoln have
- [00:02:06.793]had a lot of great faculty members and resources
- [00:02:09.462]with our department chair, Dr. Barlow.
- [00:02:11.865]And I think that might be
- [00:02:13.266]uh, the next clinical population I might be
- [00:02:15.135]interested in doing research in.
