- [00:00:00.000]So, we have
- [00:00:01.401]three different lines of research
- [00:00:03.269]going on in the lab right now.
- [00:00:04.871]The first one has to do with
- [00:00:07.173]cochlear implant recipients.
- [00:00:08.908]And so the different kinds of projects we have going on are
- [00:00:11.311]things like
- [00:00:12.812]um, making electrophysiological measures of the auditory nerve
- [00:00:17.283]um, in response to stimulation through a cochlear implant.
- [00:00:22.022]So, we measure how well the nerve is functioning.
- [00:00:24.424]And then we relate those measures
- [00:00:26.693]to different behavioral or perceptual
- [00:00:30.130]measures
- [00:00:31.164]um, that people report that they hear with a cochlear implant.
- [00:00:34.734]The last couple parts of that with our cochlear implant recipients is
- [00:00:38.538]um, measuring just kind of thinking and memory type skills,
- [00:00:42.842]and how that relates to how they hear
- [00:00:44.978]and then, uh, also measuring how well they understand speech.
- [00:00:48.882]The second line of research that we have
- [00:00:50.383]going on is kind of a newer line,
- [00:00:52.318]where Dr. Amanda Rodriguez and I
- [00:00:54.587]are working together
- [00:00:56.122]on a new study
- [00:00:57.824]looking at the effects of
- [00:01:00.026]hearing and balance function in people who
- [00:01:03.630]use illicit drugs
- [00:01:05.298]or misuse prescription opioids.
- [00:01:07.967]That one's kind of based on the fact that
- [00:01:09.769]there are certain medications that we know that
- [00:01:11.571]cause hearing loss
- [00:01:12.872]and balance dysfunction,
- [00:01:14.974]and there's been some things in the literature
- [00:01:17.444]suggesting that illicit drugs
- [00:01:19.512]can cause some of these things too.
- [00:01:20.747]And then our last line of research
- [00:01:22.715]is this new one where we've got this setup.
- [00:01:24.984]A typical outcome measure that we use
- [00:01:27.087]with people with hearing loss,
- [00:01:28.455]in order to measure how well their hearing aids work
- [00:01:30.757]or how, how well,
- [00:01:31.991]how well their cochlear implants work,
- [00:01:34.227]um
- [00:01:35.261]we have them listen to recorded sentences, and unfortunately
- [00:01:38.465]the tests that are out there are mostly
- [00:01:40.600]um, either
- [00:01:42.068]you know, a single
- [00:01:43.369]talker, a person talking very deliberately,
- [00:01:46.172]kind of not really the way that people normally
- [00:01:48.141]speak in regular conversation.
- [00:01:49.709]So, this study is, um
- [00:01:52.679]setup to where we are going to do
- [00:01:54.948]voice recordings from all kinds of people,
- [00:01:57.250]all ages.
- [00:01:58.318]We're going to make sure we get people with
- [00:02:01.321]diverse, um, talker characteristics
- [00:02:03.690]so things like
- [00:02:05.024]different U.S. dialects,
- [00:02:06.860]different
- [00:02:07.827]foreign accents.
- [00:02:09.295]So, we want people from all walks of life
- [00:02:12.899]with all different native languages
- [00:02:15.535]to develop this whole new test.
