Associate professor Angela Dietsch discusses the two lines of research she is focused on currently in her lab, the Sensorimotor Integration for Swallowing and Communication (SISC) Lab. One area focuses on how different sensory inputs affect swallowing behaviors, while the other focuses on gender aspects of communication.

[00:00:05.400]And we have two areas of research currently ongoing.
[00:00:08.960]One is using both
[00:00:10.600]clinical measures such as swallowing X-rays
[00:00:13.280]and other measures of physiology,
[00:00:16.680]as well as neuroimaging tools
[00:00:18.560]that are more typically reserved for research,
[00:00:21.000]and combining them to understand
[00:00:23.400]how different sensory inputs,
[00:00:25.280]such as taste or even temperature,
[00:00:27.160]influence swallowing behaviors.
[00:00:29.800]And also how
[00:00:31.640]um, the brain activity
[00:00:34.160]that is associated with those behaviors
[00:00:36.000]is altered by that stimuli.
[00:00:37.920]And then, we also are using that
[00:00:39.800]uh, those same tools to assess
[00:00:42.040]how various strategies
[00:00:43.560]for rehabilitating swallowing after a stroke or other sort of injury
[00:00:47.560]um
[00:00:48.360]are responding, both in terms of
[00:00:50.200]the behavior and in terms of
[00:00:52.200]the underlying brain activity patterns.
[00:00:54.720]Our second area of research
[00:00:56.080]focuses on gender aspects of communication.
[00:00:59.120]We've partnered with other researchers
[00:01:00.920]here at UNL,
[00:01:01.960]as well as University of Nebraska at Kearney, and
[00:01:04.320]across the country,
[00:01:05.680]and community partners,
[00:01:07.760]to look at
[00:01:08.880]both the communication aspects and
[00:01:11.240]the psychological or social and emotional aspects
[00:01:14.960]of communication and gender identity.
[00:01:17.760]And how we can
[00:01:18.800]best provide services to help
[00:01:20.800]people's
[00:01:21.680]gender expression align with their identity
[00:01:24.400]in ways that are safe,
[00:01:26.080]efficient and effective.
