- [00:00:00.320]Welcome back.
- [00:00:01.153]It's our regular season finale for the Huskers.
- [00:00:02.870]It's halftime.
- [00:00:03.703]Greg Sharpener. Back in Lincoln,
- [00:00:05.490]joined now by the chancellor from the
- [00:00:06.960]University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:00:08.070]Ronnie Green, always great to catch up with you,
- [00:00:10.000]with the basketball team today.
- [00:00:11.260]Wrapping up the regular season.
- [00:00:12.494]Meanwhile, back in Lincoln, we've got this wonderful big 10
- [00:00:15.600]wrestling tournament that's going on at PBA.
- [00:00:17.690]This is an exciting thing for the city,
- [00:00:19.840]for the university to host,
- [00:00:21.510]and we just wish coach Manning and those wrestlers
- [00:00:23.180]the best of luck.
- [00:00:24.013]Oh Greg, it, it sure is.
- [00:00:25.510]Excited for coach Manning
- [00:00:27.130]and for our team to be the host institution
- [00:00:30.342]and be hosting the wrestlers from all over the conference.
- [00:00:33.239]And for all of our wrestling fans in Nebraska.
- [00:00:35.450]Nebraska's a big wrestling state, right?
- [00:00:37.310]And, and has a big following in the state and, you know,
- [00:00:41.230]to take advantage of great opportunities
- [00:00:43.220]to see big sports moments like this,
- [00:00:45.340]in Pinnacle Bank Arena, in this case.
- [00:00:47.350]They do a great job there, hosting major events,
- [00:00:51.100]and you know, it makes the event maybe even bigger
- [00:00:54.180]than it might be elsewhere, as we know, in Nebraska.
- [00:00:57.340]Big 10 conference is tough in every sport,
- [00:01:00.020]certainly is tough in wrestling.
- [00:01:01.720]You know, if you look at the fact that Penn state
- [00:01:03.920]and Iowa and Michigan have all been ranked one,
- [00:01:05.990]two and three this year, during the season.
- [00:01:08.576]Our team has competed strong as they always do,
- [00:01:11.903]at a high level, had been ranked in the top 10.
- [00:01:14.680]You know, we thought we were gonna pull off the upset
- [00:01:16.320]of Iowa here just recently and, and came close.
- [00:01:19.244]So big weekend for a Hustler wrestling team.
- [00:01:23.380]I've got a chance to take in a little bit of it myself
- [00:01:25.806]and great for them to be here hosting
- [00:01:28.960]at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
- [00:01:29.793]Speaking of opportunities,
- [00:01:31.650]we've talked in the past about entrepreneurial opportunities
- [00:01:34.840]for students here at the university.
- [00:01:36.240]A new opportunity recently made some news.
- [00:01:38.570]Students deciding to fund a student led startup company.
- [00:01:42.230]What can you tell us about this?
- [00:01:43.573]Well, Greg, in our College of Business,
- [00:01:45.883]that has continued to escalate itself
- [00:01:49.010]in the rankings and in the country
- [00:01:51.080]over the last number of years,
- [00:01:52.863]a new part of the college of business is the
- [00:01:56.160]Husker Venture Fund.
- [00:01:57.742]That's. It gives an opportunity
- [00:02:00.350]for what I would say is as good as it gets in
- [00:02:02.374]experiential learning for our students to be
- [00:02:04.910]able to have a hands on real learning.
- [00:02:07.330]Win win student situation really
- [00:02:09.700]for our students and for the community at large.
- [00:02:12.570]This is a partnership between the College of Business
- [00:02:17.260]and Invest Nebraska, here in the state of Nebraska.
- [00:02:20.894]It is a student led venture capital fund.
- [00:02:25.040]That's managed by students.
- [00:02:26.510]Decisions made by students about
- [00:02:28.730]giving money to new startups.
- [00:02:30.862]It's actually built by alumni and donors
- [00:02:33.860]with support financially.
- [00:02:36.080]I think the last report I heard was $900,000
- [00:02:38.860]have been raised to put in this endowment
- [00:02:41.280]for this fund.
- [00:02:42.790]And it's bridging that kind funding gap
- [00:02:44.990]for early stage startups,
- [00:02:46.793]here in Nebraska, that we often see and experience.
- [00:02:51.570]Members of the Husker Venture Fund recently
- [00:02:54.310]awarded their very first debut investment from the fund.
- [00:02:57.790]A $25,000 award to a startup company called
- [00:03:01.310]Sentinel Fertigation.
- [00:03:03.000]And its founder Jackson Stansel,
- [00:03:05.200]who is currently a UNL doctoral student
- [00:03:07.490]in Biological Systems Engineering,
- [00:03:09.950]in our College of Engineering,
- [00:03:11.170]In the College of ACT Sciences and Natural Resources.
- [00:03:13.760]Jackson is actually, I think a second year student,
- [00:03:17.830]currently, he actually came here from Harvard.
- [00:03:20.690]He played on the Harvard football team.
- [00:03:22.270]He played for the Crimson at Harvard,
- [00:03:24.630]is a native of Alabama,
- [00:03:26.470]and has this new company that he has
- [00:03:29.260]started that looks to really solve profitability
- [00:03:32.380]and environmental sustainability issues in agriculture.
- [00:03:35.210]In crop agriculture in particular.
- [00:03:37.401]You know, resulting from inefficient use
- [00:03:40.440]of nitrogen fertilization.
- [00:03:42.030]So over fertilization or under fertilization.
- [00:03:45.540]So he's developed technology
- [00:03:48.770]to improve nitrogen
- [00:03:50.470]applications in the field that will save farmers money,
- [00:03:54.550]will more precisely apply fertilization as it's needed,
- [00:03:58.526]from the use of infrared technology in the field
- [00:04:02.430]through irrigation.
- [00:04:04.500]So, congratulations to Jackson, who won that first,
- [00:04:08.076]you know, set of funds from the Husker Ventures Fund.
- [00:04:12.320]And, and I should also mention here saying
- [00:04:15.280]that the students run this.
- [00:04:17.010]So students in the College of Business
- [00:04:19.370]are engaged in all of the decision making,
- [00:04:22.280]the diligence around evaluating these opportunities
- [00:04:25.600]and how to award this investment funding.
- [00:04:28.988]So they go through intensive bootcamp
- [00:04:32.170]training for that process.
- [00:04:34.440]And they're the ones that completed
- [00:04:36.540]the due diligence to award this
- [00:04:38.488]first debut award of the venture fund to Jackson.
- [00:04:41.760]So congratulations to him and a great
- [00:04:45.970]example of experiential, getting experience hands on,
- [00:04:50.110]in our College of Business.
- [00:04:51.440]Sure. He has great opportunities for all those students.
- [00:04:53.350]And again, congratulations to him as well.
- [00:04:55.040]Thank you for sharing that information with us.
- [00:04:57.040]Great to see you. Enjoy the second half.
- [00:04:58.750]You bet and go big red.
- [00:05:00.240]There he is, Ronnie green with us here at halftime.
- [00:05:01.710]We've got more coming up next.
