- [00:00:00.000]So, I kind of have a history of
- [00:00:04.237]going to audiologists. I have
- [00:00:06.506]a disorder within my family.
- [00:00:08.808]Um, and we all have varying levels of hearing loss, and so
- [00:00:12.912]that's kind of what got me started in audiology.
- [00:00:15.615]Just wasn't until
- [00:00:16.716]kind of mid-college that I figured out that that's what I wanted to do.
- [00:00:19.719]I am doing
- [00:00:22.155]a pilot program or pilot study
- [00:00:25.458]for
- [00:00:26.493]sports-related concussion populations.
- [00:00:29.696]So,
- [00:00:30.663]there's been a lot of research done on
- [00:00:33.333]kind of the central auditory pathway
- [00:00:35.402]in regards to
- [00:00:37.237]following concussions.
- [00:00:38.972]Uh, there has not been a lot done on
- [00:00:42.142]the functional aspect of
- [00:00:44.511]the auditory system, so
- [00:00:47.380]how one listens
- [00:00:49.416]or how you can
- [00:00:51.451]like pay attention in a classroom
- [00:00:52.986]and listen that way.
- [00:00:55.588]And so, we kind of designed this
- [00:00:59.259]protocol
- [00:01:00.326]um, to be used
- [00:01:02.095]kind of easy to use, but then also
- [00:01:04.164]um, to be implemented into schools
- [00:01:07.801]um, so that
- [00:01:09.269]if students,
- [00:01:10.336]even like K through 12,
- [00:01:12.138]um, have a sports-related concussion
- [00:01:14.641]this is kind of another
- [00:01:16.376]um, test that can be
- [00:01:18.011]used to determine
- [00:01:19.546]1) are they like ready to return to the classroom, and then
- [00:01:22.982]2) if they are,
- [00:01:24.951]uh
- [00:01:25.819]are there any supports that could be
- [00:01:27.487]implemented if they are struggling
- [00:01:29.589]um
- [00:01:30.523]when listening
- [00:01:31.825]in
- [00:01:32.392]harder listening environments?
- [00:01:34.594]I think
- [00:01:35.662]understanding the process
- [00:01:37.564]and the research process as a whole,
- [00:01:39.999]has
- [00:01:40.834]helped,
- [00:01:41.534]not only in clinic,
- [00:01:42.435]but also, like, in the classroom and also
- [00:01:45.805]thinking in the future
- [00:01:47.474]um
- [00:01:48.508]as a
- [00:01:49.209]then clinician,
- [00:01:51.478]being able to go back to research
- [00:01:52.946]and looking at
- [00:01:54.614]new and upcoming approaches
- [00:01:56.282]or technology
- [00:01:58.485]having the research basis
- [00:02:00.453]uh, will definitely help
- [00:02:02.288]um
- [00:02:02.789]in the future, but like even thus far
- [00:02:05.625]being able to use
- [00:02:07.260]different approaches
- [00:02:08.528]and
- [00:02:09.996]um
- [00:02:11.131]kind of knowing what's out there
- [00:02:12.265]in the research
- [00:02:13.466]um, has definitely helped as well.
