- [00:00:00.000]I wanted to do something
- [00:00:01.768]for my capstone that
- [00:00:03.436]really
- [00:00:04.537]uh, furthered
- [00:00:06.039]the research on hearing aids that we have,
- [00:00:08.875]and I worked in
- [00:00:09.809]Dr. Brennan's Amplification and Perception Lab
- [00:00:12.312]already so
- [00:00:13.246]when it was time to start
- [00:00:15.215]figuring out a capstone,
- [00:00:16.549]he offered to
- [00:00:18.451]let me use this study for
- [00:00:20.420]localization and how
- [00:00:22.489]it's affected by hearing loss
- [00:00:23.990]and hearing aids.
- [00:00:25.525]Um, a lot of people don't realize
- [00:00:28.128]that localization is actually
- [00:00:29.829]very important for both speech and safety.
- [00:00:32.399]I think a lot of
- [00:00:33.600]people just
- [00:00:35.568]kind of take for granted
- [00:00:37.137]that we have normal hearing and we're able to
- [00:00:39.706]hear sounds in space,
- [00:00:42.242]but I think the biggest example
- [00:00:44.077]of something like this would be
- [00:00:46.246]driving down the road one day
- [00:00:48.048]and hearing sirens
- [00:00:49.416]and trying to figure out where this
- [00:00:51.151]is coming from.
- [00:00:52.352]With hearing loss,
- [00:00:53.820]you can't always
- [00:00:55.088]rely on
- [00:00:56.356]the cues that we use
- [00:00:58.124]for localization.
- [00:00:59.526]So, my project looked at
- [00:01:01.761]how hearing aids
- [00:01:03.530]affects localization abilities
- [00:01:06.199]in people with norm -uh
- [00:01:07.667]sensorineural hearing loss.
- [00:01:09.769]And, we found that
- [00:01:11.838]hearing aids
- [00:01:13.273]as they
- [00:01:15.542]are set
- [00:01:16.676]to evidence-based practice procedures
- [00:01:19.846]that
- [00:01:21.014]the unaided,
- [00:01:22.248]or not wearing hearing aids at all, was actually
- [00:01:25.185]a lot more helpful
- [00:01:26.352]for localizing sounds
- [00:01:27.954]than
- [00:01:29.255]um, using hearing aids.
- [00:01:30.957]It's a small step
- [00:01:32.559]but I hope that my research will help
- [00:01:35.095]um, give more information about
- [00:01:37.831]these effects of hearing aids
- [00:01:40.333]by how we always think of hearing aids as a helpful factor,
- [00:01:43.570]and typically they are, but there are still
- [00:01:45.972]some instances like
- [00:01:47.941]speech and noise that
- [00:01:50.043]they don't
- [00:01:50.977]necessarily help people with,
- [00:01:52.645]and in my case, localization.
- [00:01:55.715]So, I definitely think that
- [00:01:57.817]we're helping research
- [00:02:00.720]go in the right direction with hearing aids.
- [00:02:03.356]And that's the whole goal of this lab
- [00:02:05.325]too, is to make sure that
- [00:02:07.127]the perception of sound
- [00:02:09.062]is close to equally
- [00:02:11.297]accessed by people with normal hearing
- [00:02:13.466]and sensorineural hearing loss.
