- [00:00:07.551]Hey everyone, my name's Hunter Godina
- [00:00:09.510]and I'm an undergraduate REACH trainer here
- [00:00:11.180]at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:00:12.930]This will be my second year giving REACH trainings here
- [00:00:14.850]at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:00:16.570]When I came into college,
- [00:00:17.450]I didn't really know much about suicide prevention
- [00:00:19.330]on campus or about mental health advocacy in general,
- [00:00:22.820]but it was during my freshman year, seeing a friend of mine
- [00:00:24.980]battle with his struggles with mental health
- [00:00:26.830]and with suicide ideation, realizing just
- [00:00:29.480]how important the resources here on campus were.
- [00:00:31.750]It was sitting with him, waiting with him
- [00:00:33.760]as he waited to attend his CAPS appointments here on campus,
- [00:00:36.640]walking him to the health center and seeing him go
- [00:00:38.550]through the entire process, that really opened my eyes
- [00:00:41.060]to what a growing problem suicide is on our campus.
- [00:00:44.860]Now, two years into being a REACH trainer,
- [00:00:47.030]I've realized the importance of the REACH program
- [00:00:48.770]and what we do here.
- [00:00:50.070]REACH is effectively psychological first aid for students,
- [00:00:52.910]and it gives us the ability to create a campus community
- [00:00:54.920]as a team and work together and make mental health
- [00:00:57.570]not a me problem, but a we problem,
- [00:00:59.780]and I think that's really what the core
- [00:01:01.490]of what doing here is.
- [00:01:02.970]We're trying to make sure that if you are ever faced
- [00:01:04.810]with that situation,
- [00:01:05.960]if you ever have to have that conversation
- [00:01:07.450]about suicide and suicidal ideation, you're prepared,
- [00:01:10.690]that you don't blank, that you don't reach silence,
- [00:01:12.930]that you don't fail to answer the person
- [00:01:14.710]or connect them with the resources that help them.
- [00:01:17.160]Now in my second year, as I'm getting ready to move
- [00:01:19.590]on from college and to move
- [00:01:20.720]on from the beyond the REACH program,
- [00:01:22.010]and take these skills and things that I've learned
- [00:01:24.290]out into the communities that I'll be
- [00:01:25.460]in for the rest of my life,
- [00:01:27.631]it's important that we continue to build the REACH program,
- [00:01:29.010]and there's nobody better to build that program
- [00:01:30.650]than undergraduates like ourselves.
- [00:01:32.720]If we can grow this program and add more REACH trainers,
- [00:01:35.200]we can continue to make an awesome presence here
- [00:01:36.920]on campus and build this culture
- [00:01:38.320]and community of caring that we've started here on campus.
- [00:01:41.210]If you'd like to be involved in the REACH trainer
- [00:01:43.130]or get involved and get more information
- [00:01:44.610]about mental health advocacy on campus,
- [00:01:46.600]head to resilience.unl.edu, or check us out
- [00:01:49.690]on Instagram @unlresilience to view the big red resilience
- [00:01:53.260]of wellbeing pages.
- [00:01:54.690]Thank you so much,
- [00:01:55.750]and let's continue to make campus a culture of community,
- [00:01:58.000]a culture and community of caring.
