- [00:00:01.163]Welcome back to the Kohl Center.
- [00:00:02.299]Halftime, Nebraska and Wisconsin in women's basketball.
- [00:00:04.650]And we are, again, very pleased to
- [00:00:06.930]welcome Chancellor Ronnie Green to halftime.
- [00:00:09.500]And, you know, there have been a lot to cheer
- [00:00:11.550]for this season, with this Husker women's basketball team.
- [00:00:14.320]What have been some of the highlights to you this season?
- [00:00:17.490]Well, Matt, you know,
- [00:00:18.450]they've got a great record at home
- [00:00:20.130]this season and they've really performed well
- [00:00:23.400]for the home crowd and defended the home court at the vault.
- [00:00:25.100]Been there for several of those.
- [00:00:26.420]And it's been great to see, of course.
- [00:00:27.710]That most recent game
- [00:00:28.890]against Indiana was wonderful.
- [00:00:31.840]Big wins, not only over Indiana,
- [00:00:33.750]but Michigan earlier in the season.
- [00:00:36.090]And the leadership from the experienced players,
- [00:00:38.760]especially Sam and seeing her having a great year
- [00:00:42.520]and Jaz Shelly coming in as a transfer student-athlete
- [00:00:45.040]and having the performance that she's had this year.
- [00:00:48.305]Our dynamic first time players, and, you know
- [00:00:50.853]Alexis Markowski.
- [00:00:52.730]I hear you have a term for her these days,
- [00:00:54.420]you know, I was listening to that in our last game,
- [00:00:56.640]and really strong play from Allison,
- [00:00:58.860]you know, the Humphrey wonder.
- [00:01:00.090]And so we could just go on and on
- [00:01:02.730]about this team and being able to be so supportive
- [00:01:07.004]of them.
- [00:01:08.210]Still a lot to play for, ahead.
- [00:01:10.820]We're finishing up the regular season here,
- [00:01:13.000]but the Big 10 tournament coming up next week,
- [00:01:15.760]hoping for a bid to the NCAA tournament as well.
- [00:01:18.625]You just, it's just love, what you love to see
- [00:01:21.470]from any Husker team and the future's bright.
- [00:01:24.330]Absolutely, yes.
- [00:01:25.470]I have coined the term three-Kowski
- [00:01:27.620]when she does that, so that's great.
- [00:01:28.990]So, you know, this team has performed at a high level.
- [00:01:31.490]You receive further confirmation
- [00:01:33.320]of the university performing at a high level
- [00:01:35.650]in terms of delivering a significant impact
- [00:01:37.898]to the people of our state.
- [00:01:39.810]What can you tell us about that recent news?
- [00:01:42.350]Well, Matt, we did, in fact
- [00:01:44.360]this is an independent new analysis.
- [00:01:46.660]It's actually an updating of an initial analysis
- [00:01:50.080]we did about four years ago, about the impact
- [00:01:52.880]of the University of Nebraska, all of the system,
- [00:01:55.860]all four of our campuses in the university system
- [00:01:59.160]and spells out specifically UNL, as well in economic impact
- [00:02:04.735]of the University on the state of Nebraska.
- [00:02:08.240]And this most recent analysis shows a total
- [00:02:11.630]of 5.8 billion annual economic impact
- [00:02:15.315]of the university system.
- [00:02:17.290]Almost 3 billion of that is UNL, specifically.
- [00:02:21.234]And just a huge impact on the state.
- [00:02:25.750]That analysis is conducted by Tripp Umbach,
- [00:02:29.060]they're a consulting company in Ohio
- [00:02:31.320]that we worked with now for some time.
- [00:02:33.720]It actually details the university's impact by campus.
- [00:02:37.720]As we talked about, UNL's impact, a minute ago
- [00:02:40.810]by legislative district in the state.
- [00:02:43.190]Impacting all 93 counties across the state
- [00:02:45.750]and also by region, Northeast, Southeast, panhandle,
- [00:02:49.247]West Central, and so forth.
- [00:02:53.360]The impact even while managing the challenges
- [00:02:56.870]of the pandemic is what's remarkable
- [00:02:58.700]to me because the last time we did this analysis
- [00:03:01.689]the economic impact of the university was four
- [00:03:04.830]and a half billion dollars annually.
- [00:03:07.350]Now it's 5.8 and that's during with what we have experienced
- [00:03:11.688]during the COVID pandemic, as well.
- [00:03:15.340]Along with that $2.9 billion economic impact of UNL,
- [00:03:20.560]we add 23,500 jobs to the state in 2021.
- [00:03:26.711]16,000 of those, roughly, direct jobs associated
- [00:03:30.610]with the university and 7,500, roughly, indirect
- [00:03:34.010]or induced jobs that we have a spillover effect into.
- [00:03:37.510]And a couple other key kind of interesting facts.
- [00:03:40.690]One of every seven working age Nebraskans
- [00:03:43.650]holds an NU degree.
- [00:03:45.802]5,000 new UNL graduates enter the workforce every year.
- [00:03:50.319]We're very proud of the fact that
- [00:03:52.310]over three fourths of our graduates stay here
- [00:03:54.800]in the state of Nebraska and pursue their careers here.
- [00:03:57.600]And on top of, you know, all the work we do
- [00:04:00.800]in research and development and extension and so forth,
- [00:04:03.440]so a big economic impact return of nine to one.
- [00:04:07.483]You know, if I can invest something that gives me a nine
- [00:04:11.040]to one return, I'm pretty dang happy about that.
- [00:04:14.800]And this report shows a nine to one return
- [00:04:17.783]on public dollars that go the university in terms
- [00:04:21.330]of what it returns directly to the state of Nebraska.
- [00:04:24.330]Well, nine to one, that's impressive basketball
- [00:04:28.010]or economic impact or university wide, something else.
- [00:04:31.041]Chancellor, we've enjoyed it.
- [00:04:32.310]Thank you very much for your time.
- [00:04:33.580]Oh, go Big Red!
- [00:04:34.940]That's Chancellor Ronnie Green.
- [00:04:36.130]Matt Coatney.
- [00:04:37.616]Halftime, Nebraska and Wisconsin.
- [00:04:38.710]More halftime comes your way
- [00:04:40.230]in just a few moments.
- [00:04:41.240]This is Big Red basketball.
