This video features alumni of the Melvin W. Jones Scholars Learning Community. They share some of the many benefits to joining this Learning Community, which is focused on providing a tight-knit support system for students in their first year at Nebraska and beyond.

[00:00:04.010]having the chance to not only work with mentors
[00:00:06.560]but also have a community of peers that I live
[00:00:09.190]with for two years really helped me build a connection
[00:00:12.430]and a community at UNL.
[00:00:14.470]UNL is a big school.
[00:00:15.730]And it's a big powerful institution being able
[00:00:18.450]to have access to the one of full resources
[00:00:21.430]but also the tight knit community
[00:00:22.263]of the Melvin Jones Scholars program helped me feel
[00:00:25.590]at home and connected to the university.
[00:00:28.650]One of the best things about being a Jones Scholar
[00:00:30.730]alumni is that these friends are forever
[00:00:33.050]and they're literally like family.
[00:00:34.350]We still talk to this day.
[00:00:35.930]Being a Jones Scholar helped me to develop the confidence
[00:00:39.330]I needed to use my voice, to go after certain opportunities,
[00:00:43.420]and get the support I needed to succeed.
[00:00:46.140]The Jones Scholars program helped me
[00:00:47.660]in so many different ways.
[00:00:49.340]I was coming from a small town.
[00:00:50.980]And so the university was a really exciting place
[00:00:54.080]but it was also really scary.
[00:00:56.293]And so the Jones Scholars program really kind of takes you
[00:00:59.530]under your wing and creates a family for you on campus.
[00:01:02.510]And you not only do you have professional staff
[00:01:04.840]but you also have students in former classes
[00:01:06.610]that kind of show you the ropes
[00:01:08.800]of the university and show you how things work,
[00:01:11.170]help you network, become your friends.
[00:01:13.810]So that was really, really helpful.
[00:01:16.400]Jones Scholars really helped me in many ways
[00:01:18.840]but most importantly it gave me all the tools
[00:01:21.460]that I need to navigate the college experience.
[00:01:24.200]As a first generation college student
[00:01:25.880]I did not know what all I was going to encounter
[00:01:28.390]but Jones Scholars helped set me up
[00:01:29.920]for success with mentorships, friendships, academic skills,
[00:01:34.530]and it goes on and on and on.
[00:01:36.740]Without Jones Scholars
[00:01:37.850]I don't know that I complete my freshman year
[00:01:40.050]and definitely not my degree.
[00:01:41.490]One of the best things about the Jones Scholar
[00:01:43.630]community is the friendships that you create
[00:01:47.240]and that you keep even after college.
[00:01:51.000]So I don't think I would've gotten the chance
[00:01:52.970]and the opportunity to become so close to people
[00:01:55.410]especially during my freshman and sophomore year
[00:01:58.978]without the Jones Scholar community
[00:02:00.420]You should become a Jones Scholar
[00:02:01.440]for a couple of reasons.
[00:02:02.330]One, the relationships and the connections
[00:02:04.310]that you're gonna make
[00:02:05.143]with the fellow scholars are gonna turn
[00:02:06.770]into some lifelong friendships and relationships.
[00:02:09.210]Some of the folks that I'm closest to
[00:02:10.310]to this day are folks that I lived with
[00:02:12.730]my first year in the Jones Scholars program.
[00:02:14.990]Secondly the staff
[00:02:16.120]and the faculty that you're gonna be able to interact
[00:02:17.840]with in the program are unmatched.
[00:02:19.640]They truly care about you
[00:02:20.840]and your success at the university.
[00:02:22.560]I always knew that I could rely on them
[00:02:24.240]and I always knew that they cared.
[00:02:26.090]And they're also gonna be in your corners
[00:02:27.530]for the rest of your time at UNL and beyond.
