- [00:00:00.180]Welcome back, it's halftime,
- [00:00:01.300]Greg Sharpe in Lincoln.
- [00:00:02.450]Delighted to be joined by the chancellor
- [00:00:03.970]of the University of Nebraska Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:06.250]A huge sports day.
- [00:00:07.150]We've got this game going on,
- [00:00:08.470]little bit later today it's the Super Bowl,
- [00:00:10.220]and Zac Taylor, former Husker,
- [00:00:12.310]now the head coach of the Bengals.
- [00:00:14.170]What do you think?
- [00:00:15.003]Can he get it done?
- [00:00:15.850]Well, you know,
- [00:00:16.683]the Super Bowl's always a big day,
- [00:00:18.240]and usually Nebraska has some headlines
- [00:00:21.120]in that Super Bowl of former players that are on the field.
- [00:00:26.290]In this case, we have some of them,
- [00:00:27.730]and we have Zac Taylor of course, you know,
- [00:00:30.310]for all of us to be tuned in and be interested in that game.
- [00:00:34.050]A former Nebraska quarterback
- [00:00:35.690]coaching the Bengals, great success story,
- [00:00:38.020]the Cinderella team in the Super Bowl this year,
- [00:00:40.770]and our own Stanley Morgan
- [00:00:42.900]who we all remember so well from his playing days here
- [00:00:46.010]that is also on the Bengals roster,
- [00:00:48.180]and we'll see some during that game.
- [00:00:50.180]They're playing the Rams in LA.
- [00:00:52.640]Supposed to be the one of the hottest Super Bowls on record,
- [00:00:56.900]temperature wise, as well.
- [00:00:59.650]And our fans, of course, know the
- [00:01:01.660]all too familiar with the challenge of playing a bowl game
- [00:01:03.950]in an away place, right?
- [00:01:07.420]So often playing Miami when we're
- [00:01:09.110]in the Orange Bowl all those years, as well.
- [00:01:11.380]So great day for the Super Bowl, and, you know,
- [00:01:15.150]everybody looking forward to their sweetness
- [00:01:17.070]of Valentine's Day coming up here tomorrow as well.
- [00:01:19.240]Yeah don't forget that.
- [00:01:20.330]You know, you mentioned
- [00:01:21.210]the hot temperatures in Los Angeles.
- [00:01:24.080]We've had a really mild winter here in Nebraska,
- [00:01:27.010]and in Lincoln.
- [00:01:27.990]Probably been easier
- [00:01:29.430]on heating the buildings on campus.
- [00:01:31.450]The university I know does a lot
- [00:01:32.520]to manage its energy use and utility costs.
- [00:01:34.980]How does the university compare
- [00:01:36.750]to other schools in that regard?
- [00:01:38.843]Well you know, Greg,
- [00:01:40.700]we're recognized nationally
- [00:01:43.520]as one of the best places in the country
- [00:01:45.910]in terms of the way we manage our energy costs
- [00:01:48.730]as a major institution of our education.
- [00:01:52.070]We're saving millions of dollars a year,
- [00:01:54.730]thanks to our sustainability focus
- [00:01:56.970]that's led by our facilities maintenance and operations team
- [00:01:59.820]and our business and finance division of the university.
- [00:02:03.200]Our electric and fossil fuel consumption
- [00:02:06.780]across our campuses is lower
- [00:02:08.740]than our comparable peer institutions,
- [00:02:10.700]including all of our Big 10 partners
- [00:02:13.060]across the Big 10 footprint.
- [00:02:15.110]We know this because there are third party reviews of this
- [00:02:18.760]that are done by a third party consultant called Gordian,
- [00:02:23.040]where they measure the current position
- [00:02:25.080]in operational performance,
- [00:02:26.330]relative to our peer institutions.
- [00:02:28.040]And we have come out consistently on top of those
- [00:02:31.190]for a number of years
- [00:02:32.350]because of the efforts we put in place.
- [00:02:34.840]So even though our enrollment
- [00:02:36.760]and our research expenditures have grown on campus,
- [00:02:39.340]going back the last 15 plus years,
- [00:02:42.500]our university's energy efficiency has improved
- [00:02:45.250]by 40% over that period of time,
- [00:02:48.300]saving us over $85 million over the past 17 years.
- [00:02:53.990]Just in 2020 alone,
- [00:02:56.000]our energy saving measures combined
- [00:02:58.130]for an avoided cost of $9 million across our campuses,
- [00:03:02.200]which of course gives us more resources to devote
- [00:03:05.440]to our academic mission,
- [00:03:07.720]that we're very proud of.
- [00:03:09.300]We do that through manufacturing our own room controls,
- [00:03:12.910]developing a centralized energy system,
- [00:03:16.182]and running technically complex facility systems
- [00:03:18.830]through energy storage.
- [00:03:21.450]People will recognize the big thermal tanks they see,
- [00:03:24.500]the big one we built on Antelope Valley
- [00:03:26.830]here a few years ago.
- [00:03:28.660]We invested $11.9 million into
- [00:03:31.380]that thermal energy storage tank that came on in 2018.
- [00:03:35.880]And that big, huge 8.3 million gallon tank
- [00:03:40.440]is designed to work like a battery.
- [00:03:42.280]It stores energy for us by chilling and storing that water
- [00:03:46.330]during times of low demand
- [00:03:47.770]that we can then use to cool the campus,
- [00:03:50.380]in terms of high energy demand,
- [00:03:52.650]as an example.
- [00:03:54.600]It's just saving us a tremendous amount of money.
- [00:03:57.960]During the winter storm last year,
- [00:03:59.570]many will remember the rolling blackouts,
- [00:04:01.800]and the energy crisis situation in Texas last winter,
- [00:04:05.430]and the cold weather.
- [00:04:07.280]We were able to weather that better than everyone else
- [00:04:10.570]because of the system we have.
- [00:04:13.060]And because we could switch systems, and we could save
- [00:04:16.260]from investing in very expensive natural gas,
- [00:04:20.160]that many had to do, that we didn't have to do.
- [00:04:22.450]So just very proud of our energy efficiency
- [00:04:26.170]across the campuses and our teams
- [00:04:28.010]that worked so hard to make that evermore sustainable
- [00:04:31.140]as we move forward.
- [00:04:32.170]In this time of high prices for gas and oil
- [00:04:35.440]and all that, this is really, really valuable stuff.
- [00:04:38.140]Thank you for the information there.
- [00:04:39.350]Enjoy the second half.
- [00:04:40.210]Enjoy the big game later today.
- [00:04:41.580]You bet.
- [00:04:42.560]We'll be pulling for the, well-
- [00:04:44.820]I'm not gonna tell people who to pull for,
- [00:04:46.210]but I'm gonna pull for the Bengals.
- [00:04:47.470]So anyway, go big red.
- [00:04:49.040]Very good, Ronnie Green with us here at halftime.
- [00:04:51.040]We've got more coming up next.
