- [00:00:30.440]Hello and welcome, everyone.
- [00:00:32.170]Thank you for joining us today on Piano Man
- [00:00:34.150]with Colin P. Thieszen I'm your host, Colin P. Thieszen.
- [00:00:38.070]We've got a special episode for you today
- [00:00:39.680]as I'll be teaching everyone the basics
- [00:00:41.270]of how to play a simple
- [00:00:42.440]but recognizable song that is sure
- [00:00:43.980]to be both a great project for you to work on, as well
- [00:00:46.850]as serve as a great party trick to show off your skills.
- [00:00:49.660]I'm not gonna tell you what the song is just yet, though
- [00:00:51.920]as I think you'll soon be able to figure it out, almost
- [00:00:54.480]as soon as I start playing it,
- [00:00:55.530]in fact, as it's super recognizable
- [00:00:57.530]and is sure to be a ton of fun for you to learn.
- [00:01:00.250]You can play this song on just about any piano or keyboard.
- [00:01:02.760]It's only gonna cover two octaves.
- [00:01:04.140]So anything with at least 16 keys should be enough
- [00:01:06.760]to play all the notes.
- [00:01:08.370]Now let's get started tickling those ivories.
- [00:01:11.210]The first step, as it is with most songs,
- [00:01:13.140]is going to be defined middle C,
- [00:01:15.370]it's easy on this keyboard I have here with me today
- [00:01:17.970]as I have it marked with a convenient C, now, C is also
- [00:01:21.570]the white key that you're going to find to the left
- [00:01:23.510]of the two black keys that are next to each other.
- [00:01:26.130]Now, for those of you that don't know it's important
- [00:01:27.840]for you to understand this, keys on the piano are numbered
- [00:01:31.170]or labeled alphabetically and run in order from A to G.
- [00:01:35.030]So if this is C, we can go backwards to B
- [00:01:37.370]and A, and it'll start here on the A, then A, B, C, D, E, F,
- [00:01:42.850]G, at which point, we get back to A, B, C, and so on.
- [00:01:47.100]Thankfully, this song isn't going to make us leave middle C
- [00:01:49.400]that much, pretty much everything
- [00:01:50.810]is going to be played right in this area,
- [00:01:53.290]right after middle C.
- [00:01:54.694]The first note we're going to start on though
- [00:01:56.440]is going to be the A below middle C.
- [00:01:58.360]We're going to play it with our right thumb.
- [00:02:00.560]From there, we're going to have a short little skip past
- [00:02:03.530]the B and up to the C, and then play the D twice.
- [00:02:06.520]It will sound like this.
- [00:02:08.377](upbeat music)
- [00:02:11.560]And then we come already to what will probably be
- [00:02:13.540]the hardest part of this whole bit
- [00:02:14.830]we're going to learn today.
- [00:02:16.140]You're going to have to, in rhythm, shift your whole hand
- [00:02:18.660]over one note, play one more D,
- [00:02:20.790]and then repeat this same run we just did but up two notes,
- [00:02:24.147]it will look and sound just like this.
- [00:02:26.341](upbeat music)
- [00:02:29.040]Now shift your whole hand over one note.
- [00:02:30.890]So instead of your middle finger playing it,
- [00:02:32.690]it'll be your index finger playing the D,
- [00:02:35.463](upbeat music)
- [00:02:38.950]and bam, we have our whole hand moved
- [00:02:40.800]and we didn't even skip a beat to keep on going.
- [00:02:43.630]Okay, now let's do that a few more times,
- [00:02:45.020]just so you can really get a feel for how this will look
- [00:02:47.050]and sound when you play it.
- [00:02:49.165](upbeat music)
- [00:02:50.500]Shift.
- [00:02:51.683](upbeat music)
- [00:02:53.350]One more time.
- [00:02:54.769](upbeat music)
- [00:02:59.238]Do you recognize what we're learning yet?
- [00:03:01.490]If you can't tell this is "He's a Pirate"
- [00:03:04.040]from the esteemed film franchise "Pirates of the Caribbean,"
- [00:03:07.290]it's super recognizable, super fun,
- [00:03:09.150]and we've only got one more step to learn the main theme.
- [00:03:11.960]Let's get right into this last part.
- [00:03:14.310]It starts by us again, repeating the last note we played,
- [00:03:16.750]which in this case would be the F.
- [00:03:18.592](upbeat music)
- [00:03:19.730]Going up one step to the G,
- [00:03:21.395](upbeat music)
- [00:03:22.250]and now this is when things get a little funky.
- [00:03:24.250]We're going to drop down two steps
- [00:03:25.592](upbeat music)
- [00:03:26.425]to play the E twice,
- [00:03:27.345](upbeat music)
- [00:03:29.230]Then go D, C, C, D.
- [00:03:31.368](upbeat music)
- [00:03:34.135]And that's it.
- [00:03:35.430]I'll play it in rhythms, so you can really see it in action.
- [00:03:37.827](upbeat music)
- [00:03:42.070]Again.
- [00:03:42.903](upbeat music)
- [00:03:47.190]From here, the final step is really simple.
- [00:03:49.310]You just need to put it all together,
- [00:03:50.860]and when you do it will sound a little something like this.
- [00:03:54.818](upbeat music)
- [00:04:01.151]And then in the real song, it will repeat.
- [00:04:02.466](upbeat music)
- [00:04:08.940]So there you have it, folks.
- [00:04:09.980]That's how you play the opening to the song,
- [00:04:11.527]"He's a Pirate," from "Pirates of the Caribbean."
- [00:04:14.120]As you can see, it's a short, simple, and fun little melody
- [00:04:16.620]that you can learn in a matter of minutes.
- [00:04:18.650]One of the other beautiful things
- [00:04:19.730]about this song is that there are added layers
- [00:04:21.520]of complexity as you continue on
- [00:04:23.160]but they really aren't that hard to learn.
- [00:04:24.918]I'll preview them for you real quick.
- [00:04:27.080]I'm gonna start by playing the part we just learned
- [00:04:28.780]and then move into the more advanced part.
- [00:04:30.901](upbeat music)
- [00:04:34.975]That's what we learned.
- [00:04:35.855](upbeat music)
- [00:04:45.920]And there you go.
- [00:04:46.840]That's the next part of the song and we'll preview
- [00:04:48.840]or learn how to do that in a future episode, for now,
- [00:04:51.610]though, thanks for coming and joining us here today.
- [00:04:53.950]I hope you all had a great time and learned a lot.
- [00:04:56.210]We'll see you all next week when we learn how to play
- [00:04:58.227]"Through the Fire and Flames" by DragonForce.
- [00:05:01.984](upbeat music)
- [00:05:12.445](upbeat music continues)
