- [00:00:00.130]Welcome back to halftime.
- [00:00:01.440]We're at College Park, Maryland.
- [00:00:02.930]The Huskers and the Maryland Terrapins today.
- [00:00:05.280]And we welcome in Chancellor Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:07.850]Been a while since we had a chance
- [00:00:08.850]to talk to the chancellor.
- [00:00:10.670]We're on the road today, Chancellor Green,
- [00:00:12.620]but this women's basketball team has seen
- [00:00:14.920]some ever growing crowds at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
- [00:00:18.700]What do you think that means
- [00:00:19.800]to Coach Williams and this team?
- [00:00:21.690]Well, Matt, good to be with you
- [00:00:24.650]and for our ladies to be on the road in College Park.
- [00:00:27.580]You know, I actually used to work just around the corner
- [00:00:30.500]from the University of Maryland, a period of my life
- [00:00:32.930]with the US Department of Agriculture
- [00:00:34.786]in Beltsville, Maryland, next right next door
- [00:00:37.930]to the University of Maryland, College Park.
- [00:00:39.800]So great for our team to be there tonight
- [00:00:42.430]and be competing against this great Maryland team.
- [00:00:45.450]You know that we've had such a great season to date.
- [00:00:49.320]Our women's basketball team
- [00:00:51.170]is competing at the highest level.
- [00:00:52.920]It's so fun to watch them play.
- [00:00:55.490]And we've begun to see the increase
- [00:00:58.360]in the number of our fans coming to see them play
- [00:01:01.260]and see them compete at this highest level.
- [00:01:04.520]So I'm sure to Amy, and our players,
- [00:01:07.790]and our student athletes,
- [00:01:08.870]that's very meaningful to them
- [00:01:11.400]and to be able to see that level of support.
- [00:01:13.710]And of course, all the Husker Nation's watching 'em tonight
- [00:01:16.360]as they play Maryland.
- [00:01:18.200]You've wrapped up a busy first few weeks
- [00:01:20.720]of the spring semester,
- [00:01:22.360]but several Husker honor students
- [00:01:25.030]were also busy over the break,
- [00:01:27.600]working with youth in several of the communities
- [00:01:29.880]around the area.
- [00:01:30.720]What was the focus of their work over the holidays?
- [00:01:33.670]Well, Matt, we had 11 UNL students
- [00:01:35.860]in the University Honors Program
- [00:01:37.560]that devoted part of their winter break
- [00:01:39.460]over the Christmas and New Year's holidays
- [00:01:41.920]to a Winternship, as the Honors Program is calling it,
- [00:01:46.040]where they were involved in teaching science fundamentals
- [00:01:49.480]to kindergarten through eighth grade students
- [00:01:53.230]in a kind of 4-H backed science and technology program
- [00:01:56.740]that's called Galactic Quest.
- [00:01:58.400]So these particular students were involved in that
- [00:02:02.500]between December 27th, right after Christmas,
- [00:02:05.420]and January 4th, right after New Year's.
- [00:02:08.180]The half-day program was offered at 12 sites
- [00:02:11.240]across Eastern Nebraska from Aurora to Blair, Central City,
- [00:02:15.400]Columbus over to Lincoln, Nelson, Seward,
- [00:02:18.500]Weeping Water, Grand Island,
- [00:02:20.030]and other communities across the central
- [00:02:22.350]and southeastern part of the state.
- [00:02:24.370]About 120 young people participated in the program
- [00:02:27.990]with these 11 honor students.
- [00:02:30.230]And then following that,
- [00:02:31.560]during the week of January 10th through 14th,
- [00:02:33.950]right as we were gearing up to come back
- [00:02:36.060]for spring semester at UNL,
- [00:02:38.600]more of our honor students spent part of their winter break
- [00:02:41.740]leading after learning school learning programs,
- [00:02:44.490]or leading these after-school programs
- [00:02:46.760]at both Lincoln and Omaha locations,
- [00:02:49.260]exposing more youngsters to scientific concepts
- [00:02:52.680]outside of the school setting
- [00:02:54.710]in that kinda after-school setting,
- [00:02:57.200]giving them a connection to influential role models
- [00:03:00.380]in these students,
- [00:03:01.550]that are honor students at the university.
- [00:03:03.420]And for our students,
- [00:03:05.040]providing them a chance to kind of flex their teaching
- [00:03:07.510]and leadership and communication skills,
- [00:03:09.680]make a little money in the process, during break,
- [00:03:13.040]and to certainly have fun with these kids.
- [00:03:15.820]It's the latest kind of effort,
- [00:03:19.210]in combination with Nebraska 4-H.
- [00:03:21.770]The Nebraska Extension operates across the State of Nebraska
- [00:03:25.260]with the university and our university honors program
- [00:03:28.410]at UNL provide these kind of opportunities for youth.
- [00:03:32.240]Last summer, in 2021, about 70 of our Husker students
- [00:03:37.000]served as mentors with the after-school programs like this
- [00:03:40.370]and summer learning opportunities programs.
- [00:03:42.610]And since 2018, just in the last three-year period,
- [00:03:47.430]we have worked with Lincoln's Community Learning Centers,
- [00:03:50.340]with the 4-H program,
- [00:03:51.670]and with the Beyond School Bells Program,
- [00:03:54.940]and other partners,
- [00:03:56.210]to provide similar kinds of learning experiences
- [00:03:58.960]for nearly 3000 youth.
- [00:04:00.550]So I'm very proud of these honor students
- [00:04:04.010]for the work that they did
- [00:04:05.290]in this year's Winternship Program
- [00:04:07.870]across South-central and Eastern and Southeastern Nebraska.
- [00:04:12.780]Oh, super stuff.
- [00:04:13.620]I always learn so much stuff
- [00:04:15.510]about what's going on around campus.
- [00:04:16.920]Chancellor, thank you very much.
- [00:04:18.030]It's always a pleasure talking to you.
- [00:04:19.490]Yeah, go Big Red.
- [00:04:20.600]Go Big Red.
- [00:04:21.433]That's Chancellor Ronnie Green. I'm Matt Coatney.
- [00:04:23.150]Halftime here at College Park,
- [00:04:24.960]the Huskers and the Terrapins.
- [00:04:26.530]More halftime in a few moments.
- [00:04:28.240]This is Big Red basketball.
