- [00:00:04.320]So Jen, it's been about a year
- [00:00:06.590]since we stood up testing for COVID-19 on campus.
- [00:00:10.290]How did we go about setting up testing?
- [00:00:12.930]You know we're really grateful
- [00:00:14.150]that we had partnerships with Test Nebraska
- [00:00:16.700]and with the Nebraska Public Health Lab.
- [00:00:18.450]Yet we started to recognize
- [00:00:20.810]that we were going to need to offer
- [00:00:22.320]significantly higher volume of tests
- [00:00:24.810]that would be less invasive
- [00:00:26.780]and where we could have really quick turnaround of results.
- [00:00:29.970]And it became clear to us in those moments
- [00:00:31.920]that we were going to need to stand up
- [00:00:33.270]our own COVID testing program
- [00:00:35.470]in order to best protect our campus community.
- [00:00:38.260]And now fast forward a year,
- [00:00:39.810]we've done 270,000 tests.
- [00:00:42.850]That is huge
- [00:00:43.810]thanks to so many pieces coming together.
- [00:00:46.080]We constructed COVID testing pod buildings
- [00:00:49.470]all around the campus.
- [00:00:50.870]We consulted on legal and regulatory aspects.
- [00:00:54.710]We assembled hundreds of thousands of test collection kits.
- [00:00:59.210]We stood up technology to schedule
- [00:01:01.580]and deliver results electronically.
- [00:01:03.810]We launched our COVID testing lab
- [00:01:06.330]at the Vet Diagnostic Center.
- [00:01:08.120]It's been a true testament
- [00:01:09.570]to the hardworking can-do Nebraska spirit.
- [00:01:13.210]So Duan, how's it work from the time that a student
- [00:01:16.380]or a staff or a faculty member comes in
- [00:01:18.860]and provides you know, the test sample?
- [00:01:21.930]Saliva sample collected from collection site
- [00:01:24.488]throughout the university
- [00:01:26.340]and barcode for identification.
- [00:01:28.014]A courier brings those samples
- [00:01:30.320]to Nebraska Veterinary Diagnostic Center.
- [00:01:33.130]We process sample for real-time polymerase chain reactions
- [00:01:36.890]or real-time PCR.
- [00:01:38.350]This process takes about 80 minutes.
- [00:01:40.740]When we finalize the test,
- [00:01:43.010]the result will show in Safer Community app
- [00:01:45.510]within a minute.
- [00:01:46.990]So Jen, how would you explain why our testing service
- [00:01:51.730]and our testing protocol has been so important.
- [00:01:54.580]This has helped us to have
- [00:01:55.900]a data oriented approach to making campus-wide decisions
- [00:01:59.710]for the best safety and protection
- [00:02:02.230]of our campus community and the broader Lincoln community.
- [00:02:04.930]So hats off to all of our testing team.
- [00:02:08.230]And everyone that's contributed
- [00:02:10.090]to being able to provide this safety mechanism for UNL
- [00:02:14.370]and for all of the greater community that we're in.
