- [00:00:03.703]I'm Marilyn Grady
- [00:00:04.625]and I'm a professor
- [00:00:05.572]of Educational Administration
- [00:00:06.790]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:09.426]And unbelievably,
- [00:00:10.577]I've been here for 35 years,
- [00:00:12.128]being a professor
- [00:00:12.879]of Educational Administration
- [00:00:14.180]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:15.937]My graduate work was completed at
- [00:00:19.486]the Ohio State University
- [00:00:21.821]in Columbus, Ohio.
- [00:00:23.590]And that was a magnificent program
- [00:00:25.425]that brought
- [00:00:26.576]a selective,
- [00:00:27.821]selected students to campus.
- [00:00:30.196]For two years
- [00:00:31.064]you had to stay there on campus.
- [00:00:33.650]The university provided all of your
- [00:00:36.770]course fees
- [00:00:38.609]and expenses.
- [00:00:39.789]They provided you with a
- [00:00:42.501]a job on campus that gave you an income,
- [00:00:46.096]and we were in a cohort of 25 individuals
- [00:00:48.848]from all over the United States.
- [00:00:51.584]And so the friendships we
- [00:00:54.137]we put together over
- [00:00:55.188]that time were magnificent.
- [00:00:59.476]My work history,
- [00:01:00.643]I've been a
- [00:01:02.529]high school social studies teacher,
- [00:01:05.198]I've been an elementary
- [00:01:06.466]and a high school principal,
- [00:01:09.936]and I've been
- [00:01:10.720]here doing this for those 35 years.
- [00:01:14.707]And I was hired to come here to Nebraska,
- [00:01:18.344]fondly referred to
- [00:01:19.429]as the Great American Desert.
- [00:01:21.381]And who would think
- [00:01:22.398]if I grew up on the shores of Lake Erie
- [00:01:24.217]that I would want to be
- [00:01:25.118]in the Great American desert?
- [00:01:26.920]Well, I do want to be
- [00:01:28.271]in the Great American desert
- [00:01:29.806]because I think I probably get to work
- [00:01:31.875]with some of the finest students
- [00:01:33.193]in the world.
- [00:01:34.477]My specialties are
- [00:01:35.928]organizational theory,
- [00:01:36.972]administrative theory,
- [00:01:38.982]research methods,
- [00:01:40.300]historical methods of research,
- [00:01:43.303]women in leadership.
- [00:01:44.888]I started a Women
- [00:01:46.039]in Leadership Conference
- [00:01:47.023]when I first came here
- [00:01:48.641]because women were few
- [00:01:50.527]and far between on our program.
- [00:01:52.996]And so every October, we've
- [00:01:55.181]had a conference here
- [00:01:57.770]and
- [00:01:59.352]students in our program come,
- [00:02:00.859]the faculty come,
- [00:02:02.237]people in the state come,
- [00:02:03.749]and our graduates come
- [00:02:05.544]every year.
- [00:02:06.117]And it's a time to get together
- [00:02:08.144]and eat,
- [00:02:09.216]be entertained,
- [00:02:10.138]and tell lies.
- [00:02:10.997]And so
- [00:02:11.782]it's good.
- [00:02:12.282]We had one of those in October
- [00:02:13.600]and we're still alive.
- [00:02:15.702]I'm engaged in a number of national
- [00:02:18.521]and international associations.
- [00:02:21.708]I founded the
- [00:02:23.246]Journal of Women in Ed Leadership,
- [00:02:25.024]which has been in existence
- [00:02:26.679]for many years.
- [00:02:28.148]And I also have founded a journal called
- [00:02:30.650]Contemporary Issues in Education.
- [00:02:33.102]And those are both housed
- [00:02:34.821]in the Digital Commons
- [00:02:36.189]of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:02:38.958]And that digital commons
- [00:02:40.393]is the greatest
- [00:02:41.077]repository
- [00:02:42.583]of research and writing
- [00:02:44.236]in the United States.
- [00:02:45.698]So,
- [00:02:46.637]if you're published in that,
- [00:02:48.922]people all over
- [00:02:49.765]have access to that,
- [00:02:50.920]and so it kind of
- [00:02:52.228]extends our reach
- [00:02:53.499]in that way.
- [00:02:55.608]I like to write,
- [00:02:57.274]I like to do research,
- [00:02:58.761]and I like to work with doctoral students
- [00:03:01.130]who are trying to write and do research.
- [00:03:04.033]And so
- [00:03:05.051]we do a lot of hands-on stuff with that,
- [00:03:07.604]although our program
- [00:03:08.721]is a distance program.
- [00:03:11.090]I talk to students by phone constantly.
- [00:03:14.410]We do a lot of Zoom meetings.
- [00:03:16.479]But even students who are at a distance
- [00:03:18.548]will choose to come to campus
- [00:03:20.681]just to have some face-to-face time
- [00:03:23.436]to move forward.
- [00:03:25.154]And over time,
- [00:03:26.000]we kind of balance that
- [00:03:27.694]according to the student's needs,
- [00:03:29.159]and I think it's been
- [00:03:30.000]very successful.
- [00:03:31.995]What makes a successful student?
- [00:03:34.330]A successful student is a person
- [00:03:36.015]who says,
- [00:03:37.106]I want this!
- [00:03:38.384]And does the ability,
- [00:03:39.907]has the ability to
- [00:03:40.911]sit/stay
- [00:03:41.535]with the dog,
- [00:03:42.222]which the dogs in our house
- [00:03:43.523]don't have the ability to do.
- [00:03:45.141]But if the students
- [00:03:46.092]will sit still and do it,
- [00:03:47.948]if they'll call me,
- [00:03:49.429]if they want to come to campus
- [00:03:50.712]and we sit together
- [00:03:52.049]occasionally,
- [00:03:53.650]you can get it done.
- [00:03:55.068]All you've got to do
- [00:03:55.935]is have the motivation.
- [00:03:57.670]So
- [00:03:58.657]I love what I do
- [00:04:00.506]and
- [00:04:01.753]let me know if I can
- [00:04:02.539]do anything for you.
- [00:04:03.650]Thanks.
