- [00:00:04.600]Welcome to the 2022 MLK Commemorative Celebration.
- [00:00:09.320]This year's theme borrows its inspiration
- [00:00:11.840]from the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
- [00:00:14.997]"When the problems of the world are gigantic in extent
- [00:00:18.100]and chaotic in detail, give us the power of endurance."
- [00:00:23.540]The theme was designed to highlight a year
- [00:00:25.800]of historic social movements and community action.
- [00:00:29.310]From an ongoing global health pandemic to social unrest
- [00:00:32.780]that has sparked conversations and movements
- [00:00:34.790]across the globe, the calls for equity
- [00:00:37.317]and inclusion resonate loudly throughout the nation.
- [00:00:41.210]Locally and nationally, we've experienced several efforts
- [00:00:45.400]designed to ignite action, honor our history,
- [00:00:49.560]and encourage conversation.
- [00:00:51.930]These include commemorating the first
- [00:00:55.090]nationally recognized observances of Juneteenth
- [00:00:58.830]and Indigenous Peoples Day
- [00:01:00.720]and a federal advisory initiative on Asian-Americans,
- [00:01:04.930]Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders.
- [00:01:08.360]At Nebraska, we identified seven grand challenges
- [00:01:13.150]positioning the university to think bigger
- [00:01:16.510]and more strategically about complex problems
- [00:01:20.570]and to bring solutions to serve the greater good.
- [00:01:24.170]Two of these challenges, anti-racism and racial equity
- [00:01:28.400]and health equity, call for a deeper examination
- [00:01:32.160]of systemic issues that we can connect to today's event.
- [00:01:36.550]Here at Nebraska, we are committed to safeguarding equity,
- [00:01:40.250]inclusion, and respect for all
- [00:01:42.950]through our ongoing commitment towards engaging
- [00:01:45.270]in difficult dialogue, equity-based actions,
- [00:01:48.660]and inclusive excellence.
- [00:01:51.087]This calls for us to reflect on our achievements
- [00:01:53.670]in advancing inclusive excellence
- [00:01:55.800]while being equally committed to engaging in practices
- [00:01:58.900]designed to educate, rejuvenate, and validate.
- [00:02:03.170]Each year we commemorate the legacy of Dr. King
- [00:02:06.230]through an annual celebration honoring his life
- [00:02:09.500]while recognizing members of our campus and community
- [00:02:12.720]whose work epitomizes the legacy and work
- [00:02:15.340]of the civil rights leader.
- [00:02:17.360]This year, we seek to reinforce UNL's commitment
- [00:02:21.130]to diversity, equity, and inclusion in several ways.
- [00:02:25.690]The chancellor's Fulfilling the Dream award
- [00:02:28.170]will honor those whose personal and professional work
- [00:02:31.090]demonstrates extraordinary
- [00:02:33.220]and sustained dedication to these ideals.
- [00:02:36.550]We'll share words of affirmation
- [00:02:38.960]through members of our campus community.
- [00:02:41.690]We'll enjoy stunning performances
- [00:02:43.960]led by our talented students.
- [00:02:46.230]And finally, a moderated conversation features
- [00:02:49.560]renowned journalist and author Lisa Ling.
- [00:02:52.980]We hope today's event provides insight into national
- [00:02:56.200]and local leaders engaged in the work of social justice
- [00:02:59.430]and community service, highlighting and inspiring
- [00:03:02.780]intentional action for our Husker family.
- [00:03:06.060]We invite our campus and community
