- [00:00:00.200]We're at the half here in East Lansing,
- [00:00:01.820]and for the first time this year,
- [00:00:02.970]we're very happy to have Chancellor Ronnie Green with us.
- [00:00:05.210]Happy holidays to you, Chancellor, as always.
- [00:00:07.540]One more women's basketball game here
- [00:00:09.100]before we wrap up 2021.
- [00:00:11.360]This group of Huskers has a look of a very good team.
- [00:00:14.550]All conference games now the rest of the way,
- [00:00:16.730]for the next two months.
- [00:00:17.810]How do you think this team stacks up
- [00:00:19.440]against an always tough Big 10 Conference?
- [00:00:21.930]Well, happy holidays to you too, Matt.
- [00:00:24.020]It's great to see you,
- [00:00:24.853]and you just can't say enough good things
- [00:00:27.300]about this women's basketball team this year
- [00:00:29.460]and the job that Amy and her staff and crew
- [00:00:31.590]are doin' with the team.
- [00:00:33.730]They're fun to watch,
- [00:00:35.830]so many players steppin' up to score when the team needs it.
- [00:00:39.310]You know, I had not been able to see them play
- [00:00:42.020]until they played Drake here recently before the holidays.
- [00:00:46.610]And my wife had been telling me what a great team this was
- [00:00:49.280]and how it was gonna be fun to watch them all year,
- [00:00:51.120]and boy, is she right.
- [00:00:52.750]And quite a semester for us, you know,
- [00:00:55.210]with an 11 and 0 women's basketball team here,
- [00:01:00.230]but we've had quite a run in women's volleyball.
- [00:01:02.610]Of course, we finished the season with,
- [00:01:04.610]and went all the way to the Natty,
- [00:01:06.770]all the way to the end, basically, of that season
- [00:01:09.590]and great success there.
- [00:01:10.860]And now we've got the women's basketball team,
- [00:01:13.530]handing that off into a great conference season ahead,
- [00:01:17.250]and it's gonna be fun to watch them
- [00:01:18.930]throughout the rest of this year.
- [00:01:20.510]Well, you know, December, as you said,
- [00:01:22.210]the end of the fall semester with it.
- [00:01:24.140]December commencement ceremonies at Nebraska
- [00:01:26.610]were held on the 17th and 18th.
- [00:01:28.860]I know commencement is always a special event for you.
- [00:01:32.540]We had Bella Cravens,
- [00:01:33.680]one of our women's basketball players who graduated,
- [00:01:36.320]what does commencement represent
- [00:01:37.640]for this university and the state of Nebraska?
- [00:01:39.730]Well, there's two favorite days of the year for me,
- [00:01:43.510]the one is graduation, certainly,
- [00:01:45.840]whether it's in December or May and August,
- [00:01:48.300]when we celebrate with our graduates,
- [00:01:49.750]the other is the start of the school year.
- [00:01:51.320]Those are both big days for us.
- [00:01:54.680]It's the opening the door for all this new talent
- [00:01:57.520]that we're releasin' on the world,
- [00:02:00.450]that come out of our graduating classes.
- [00:02:03.120]Couldn't be prouder to be leading
- [00:02:05.360]our state's flagship land grant university
- [00:02:07.740]and charged with preparing young people in that way
- [00:02:11.390]for makin' a life of difference.
- [00:02:13.400]You know, this season, in December,
- [00:02:16.190]was the first time in two years
- [00:02:18.180]we'd had the opportunity
- [00:02:19.470]to have December commencement together in PBA,
- [00:02:22.610]and we graduated 1,344 new graduates
- [00:02:26.340]from the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:02:29.670]We celebrated coming off of what this past summer
- [00:02:34.000]was a record graduating class for us.
- [00:02:36.310]We didn't expect May and August to be a record for us,
- [00:02:39.270]but it was, where we had more students graduate than ever.
- [00:02:42.960]And then a big group now havin' finished
- [00:02:46.250]with this December commencement.
- [00:02:47.660]Shane Farritor,
- [00:02:48.970]who is one of our outstanding professors
- [00:02:50.940]in the College of Engineering,
- [00:02:52.180]the founder of Virtual Incision,
- [00:02:53.860]a new surgical robotics company,
- [00:02:55.800]that just last week raised $46,000,000
- [00:02:58.860]for the next round of funding in their company,
- [00:03:02.100]was our speaker for our undergraduates,
- [00:03:04.980]and it was really pretty special.
- [00:03:07.360]Shane talked about knowing your center
- [00:03:09.440]and how important it is to know your center.
- [00:03:12.770]He unfortunately had contracted COVID-19 himself
- [00:03:16.330]the day before commencement
- [00:03:18.590]and was able to deliver that address remotely
- [00:03:22.990]to the graduates, and it was outstanding.
- [00:03:26.120]I'm the first generation in my family
- [00:03:28.410]to have the opportunity to receive a college degree,
- [00:03:31.040]and every year at commencement,
- [00:03:32.970]I ask our graduates,
- [00:03:34.390]before we do the turning of the tassel at the end,
- [00:03:36.950]to stand up in groups.
- [00:03:39.010]And one of those groups I ask to stand up
- [00:03:41.360]is the first in their family
- [00:03:43.070]to graduate with a college degree,
- [00:03:45.380]and about 20% of our graduates
- [00:03:47.650]currently fall into that category.
- [00:03:49.480]So, very proud of them,
- [00:03:50.540]very proud of Bella on the team here
- [00:03:53.760]for finishing her degree,
- [00:03:55.110]and I know she celebrated that with her team
- [00:03:58.090]at the Drake game, you know,
- [00:04:00.090]just after graduation or day after graduation.
- [00:04:03.440]So, just this young talent
- [00:04:05.030]that's being released on the world, this graduating class,
- [00:04:08.630]from every county in Nebraska,
- [00:04:10.630]from 40 states around the country,
- [00:04:14.160]and 44 countries around the world, and excited for them.
- [00:04:19.370]That's Chancellor Ronnie Green.
- [00:04:20.520]Thank you very much, have a happy new year,
- [00:04:22.360]and thank you for the time.
- [00:04:24.010]You bet, Matt,
- [00:04:24.843]and lookin' forward to a great rest of the season
- [00:04:26.780]for our Lady Huskers.
- [00:04:28.260]That's Chancellor Ronnie Green.
- [00:04:29.260]I'm Matt Coatney, more halftime in a few moments,
- [00:04:31.680]this is Big Red basketball.
