- [00:00:01.340](lively music)
- [00:00:05.220]I've chosen MEM over
- [00:00:07.610]an MBA or a technical engineering master's degree
- [00:00:09.620]because I'm an army officer
- [00:00:11.870]and typically army officers
- [00:00:13.660]that have an engineering branch job code,
- [00:00:16.400]go for MEM programs,
- [00:00:18.150]just because it's a little bit more applicable
- [00:00:19.680]to what we do.
- [00:00:20.610]From the get go,
- [00:00:21.443]the financial cost is really not too much of a burden,
- [00:00:24.120]I don't think,
- [00:00:24.953]compared to a lot of MEM programs out there,
- [00:00:26.330]but on top of that,
- [00:00:27.710]as an aptitude service member, as a veteran,
- [00:00:29.630]you get a 15% discount off tuition.
- [00:00:32.230]The program has great courses that are specific to my needs.
- [00:00:34.880]I've so far taking two courses on both leadership
- [00:00:37.650]and teamwork and organizational collaboration.
- [00:00:40.470]And, part of my job as an army officer
- [00:00:42.370]is basically leading people,
- [00:00:44.500]bringing teams together to accomplish a mission.
- [00:00:46.500]I would say the biggest thing
- [00:00:48.040]that the program has done for me is most principally,
- [00:00:50.970]is leadership.
- [00:00:52.300]Just understanding why we lead the way that we do.
- [00:00:55.550]I've always thought of myself as a good leader.
- [00:00:57.310]I've been rated as a good leader against my peers,
- [00:00:59.040]but I've never really understood
- [00:01:00.720]why other leaders are the way that they are.
- [00:01:02.710]And it's interesting to see
- [00:01:03.930]kind of like the psychological aspect of that.
- [00:01:06.080]I've noticed in my five plus years,
- [00:01:08.950]professional life after undergrad,
- [00:01:11.090]that I deal with people
- [00:01:12.230]that are kind of rigid when it comes to, you know,
- [00:01:15.220]understanding why people work,
- [00:01:16.560]understanding how people work,
- [00:01:17.680]understanding how teams come together
- [00:01:19.210]and teams collaborate
- [00:01:20.460]and get the job done.
- [00:01:21.590]Having a STEM background combined
- [00:01:23.170]with this master's degree and this program,
- [00:01:25.820]I'm going to be able to walk into an organization,
- [00:01:27.810]identify why things are deficient,
- [00:01:30.280]identify why people are struggling
- [00:01:32.470]or excelling in whatever they're doing
- [00:01:34.480]and better help the organization,
- [00:01:36.540]whether it's their bottom line
- [00:01:37.850]or whether it's just productivity in general.
- [00:01:39.930]Which is something that I think people
- [00:01:41.360]with hard engineering degrees
- [00:01:42.840]that don't have this kind of leadership background,
- [00:01:45.510]would struggle with when it comes
- [00:01:47.100]to improving quality of organizations
- [00:01:51.570]and processes and productivity.
