- [00:00:04.160]Hello, and welcome.
- [00:00:06.370]When we drafted our latest strategic plan,
- [00:00:09.600]we pledged to make a difference
- [00:00:11.430]in the professions and our community.
- [00:00:14.320]To quote our mission statement,
- [00:00:16.127]"We create a resilient, healthy, and beautiful world
- [00:00:20.497]"within a diverse and inclusive culture
- [00:00:23.177]"of rigorous inquiry and innovation,
- [00:00:26.147]"united by the transformative power of planning and design."
- [00:00:31.870]These values are strongly woven into
- [00:00:34.640]the fabric of our curriculum, and I'm excited to share
- [00:00:38.250]some of the student projects that are making an impact,
- [00:00:41.220]a positive impact now with future dividends.
- [00:00:45.230]Community and regional planning students and faculty
- [00:00:48.430]collaborate with local stakeholders
- [00:00:50.760]in David City and Syracuse, Nebraska.
- [00:00:54.570]Their goal, to develop downtown revitalization plans
- [00:00:59.260]that boost economic growth.
- [00:01:01.870]It's actually getting to meet city leaders and officials,
- [00:01:05.040]and learning from them and their experiences
- [00:01:08.060]is a great part past just the academics
- [00:01:12.100]of learning in the classroom,
- [00:01:13.210]so I think having that real-world experience
- [00:01:15.270]really helps you to understand
- [00:01:16.510]how you can become a planning professional
- [00:01:19.170]and work on a real project with a real community.
- [00:01:22.180]In one of our third year interior design studios,
- [00:01:25.730]agriculture meets urban interiors.
- [00:01:29.080]Kendra Ordia's students team up
- [00:01:31.300]with a local vertical farm to learn how to grow
- [00:01:35.150]and harvest fresh food indoors.
- [00:01:38.480]It's an exciting way to promote
- [00:01:40.260]healthier working, and living environments.
- [00:01:43.000]The owners of over are really knowledgeable
- [00:01:45.540]about the science side of things, which being a designer,
- [00:01:48.220]I don't think personally, I at least think about
- [00:01:50.880]the science side of things very often,
- [00:01:52.460]so they give us all this background knowledge
- [00:01:54.660]that then we can take into our design
- [00:01:57.190]and make those decisions more meaningful.
- [00:01:59.556](upbeat music)
- [00:02:01.560]Our landscape architecture students
- [00:02:03.520]pursue environmental justice for marginalized citizens.
- [00:02:08.280]Salvador Lindquist, and his students
- [00:02:10.790]examine LED pollution sites in the city of Omaha.
- [00:02:14.800]They'll document environmental inequality,
- [00:02:17.660]and recommend both proactive and restorative solutions.
- [00:02:22.350]There's a lot of different ways that this sort of
- [00:02:25.470]contamination and pollution can affect people.
- [00:02:27.950]And so I think it's really important just to examine that
- [00:02:30.380]and understand how this has happened,
- [00:02:32.500]and then what are the things that we as landscape architects
- [00:02:35.400]and planners can do to sort of prevent this from happening
- [00:02:38.370]in the future.
- [00:02:40.760]Creating better learning environments is anything
- [00:02:43.540]but child's play, for one of our collaborate studios.
- [00:02:47.440]Fourth-year-students imagine possibilities
- [00:02:50.500]for a new daycare facility
- [00:02:52.480]on the University of Nebraska Medical Center Campus.
- [00:02:56.160]It's a partnership that provides real-world experience
- [00:02:59.660]for architecture, interior design,
- [00:03:02.300]and landscape architecture students.
- [00:03:04.930]And we thought that'd be a great opportunity
- [00:03:06.620]for the students here to learn what it means to design
- [00:03:09.710]for childcare, what it means to design on a campus setting,
- [00:03:12.710]and also be able to engage with the professionals,
- [00:03:15.810]myself and my team that are working on that project
- [00:03:18.650]in the real world.
- [00:03:20.400]With projects like these,
- [00:03:22.110]it's no wonder our faculty and students keep winning
- [00:03:25.670]national and regional awards.
- [00:03:28.380]Visit our website or follow us on social media
- [00:03:31.270]to learn more.
- [00:03:32.910]I also have an update on our construction project.
- [00:03:36.220]I am excited to share the project has officially started.
- [00:03:41.210]All three floors of the library are vacated.
- [00:03:44.620]And this month, we begin the demolition and remodel process.
- [00:03:49.280]We are beyond excited,
- [00:03:51.280]and I will give you updates as the project continues.
- [00:03:55.190]As you can see by the reviews underway behind me,
- [00:03:58.490]our semester is drawing to a close.
- [00:04:01.240]And with that, I would like to wish you and yours
- [00:04:05.090]a wonderful, restful holiday season.
- [00:04:09.110]Until next time.
- [00:04:10.150](upbeat music ending)
