- [00:00:04.440]There is a shortage of high quality attorneys
- [00:00:06.930]to represent families in juvenile court
- [00:00:09.500]because the traditional law school experience
- [00:00:11.850]does not provide you with the training
- [00:00:14.510]and support you need to be effective.
- [00:00:27.950]At Nebraska Law, we hope to fix this problem
- [00:00:30.370]by increasing the number of attorneys available
- [00:00:32.880]and the quality of attorneys
- [00:00:34.460]to represent children and families.
- [00:00:36.610]The Children's Justice Clinic at the College of Law
- [00:00:39.650]offers students a unique opportunity
- [00:00:42.810]to learn how to be effective advocates
- [00:00:44.880]for children who have experienced abuse or neglect.
- [00:00:47.700]They also are advocating for their child clients
- [00:00:50.290]on a regular basis in the courthouse.
- [00:00:53.020]We partner with the Center
- [00:00:54.530]on Children and Families and the Law,
- [00:00:56.580]to ensure student attorneys are learning
- [00:00:59.320]all the important skills they need
- [00:01:00.960]to be high quality attorneys.
- [00:01:02.990]So they learn about trauma in children, human trafficking,
- [00:01:06.500]substance use, and poverty, which really impacts
- [00:01:09.820]their ability to be a highly effective advocate
- [00:01:13.520]for their child client.
- [00:01:15.160]Our judges tell us the Nebraska Law students
- [00:01:17.680]are raising the bar of child representation
- [00:01:20.640]in Lancaster County.
- [00:01:33.040]The success of the Children's Justice Clinic
- [00:01:35.300]prompted us to expand the program to our rural communities
- [00:01:38.560]who desperately need attorneys
- [00:01:40.610]to be effective advocates in the juvenile court.
- [00:01:43.180]Nebraska is perfect for our program
- [00:01:45.730]because Nebraska stakeholders are committed
- [00:01:47.830]to ensuring children and families
- [00:01:49.890]have high quality advocates
- [00:01:51.620]and support our programs to achieve that goal.
- [00:01:54.700]We will increase the availability and quality
- [00:01:57.770]of attorneys interested and willing to represent children
- [00:02:01.300]and families in juvenile court.
- [00:02:03.550]I love my job because children
- [00:02:05.500]are most vulnerable population
- [00:02:07.940]and they need a fighter in their corner.
