- [00:00:00.288](Greg) Welcome back candid kickoff here,
- [00:00:01.590]our final regular season game or black Friday game
- [00:00:03.970]the day after thanksgiving we got a trophy at stake today,
- [00:00:06.430]the heroes trophy game,
- [00:00:07.660]and it senior day for several Huskers who have meant so much
- [00:00:11.090]to this program, and as we do each and every week,
- [00:00:13.260]a chance to sit down and chat with the Chancellor
- [00:00:15.670]for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:17.480]This is a special day and first of all,
- [00:00:19.090]happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
- [00:00:20.568](Chan. Ronnie) Happy Thanksgiving to you
- [00:00:21.870]and all of us coronation you know,
- [00:00:23.530]on this day after Thanksgiving and this tradition that we
- [00:00:26.220]have on black Friday to welcome IOWA
- [00:00:29.730]into Memorial Stadium.
- [00:00:33.080]I'm just particularly grateful for all of
- [00:00:35.040]our student athletes, especially our seniors,
- [00:00:38.900]this being their last game,
- [00:00:41.081]their last chance to play in Memorial Stadium.
- [00:00:44.380]And the words that really just come to my mind are
- [00:00:46.790]resilience and grit.
- [00:00:49.230]They've played through so much adversity
- [00:00:51.390]these last two years,
- [00:00:53.030]and certainly uncertainty through the pandemic,
- [00:00:55.810]the whole deal last fall of where are we gonna be able
- [00:00:58.150]to play and then playing in empty stadiums
- [00:01:01.260]through the season.
- [00:01:02.620]It's just a big commitment to be a Husker student athlete,
- [00:01:05.900]and it's certainly even been bigger these last two years.
- [00:01:09.200]And when you think of how many of the seniors who came back
- [00:01:12.640]for one more season this year,
- [00:01:15.500]particularly on defense as a unit performed
- [00:01:18.850]at a really high level,
- [00:01:20.570]And of course especially this week with
- [00:01:22.950]the Thanksgiving holiday, just a reminder to be thankful,
- [00:01:26.380]including the sacrifices that have been made by
- [00:01:28.640]our student athletes over what's been hopefully
- [00:01:31.740]not repeatable last couple of years ahead as we move,
- [00:01:35.290]hopefully to more normal times.
- [00:01:37.323](Greg)You mentioned gratitude.
- [00:01:38.450]That's certainly a big theme for this time of year.
- [00:01:40.430]You had a chance last week to say thank you to some
- [00:01:42.760]university employees, some that have been here for decades.
- [00:01:45.390]What were some of the highlights?
- [00:01:47.364](Chan. Ronnie) Well, every year Greg,
- [00:01:48.745]we recognize our employees.
- [00:01:51.440]We have about 6,000 employees at the
- [00:01:53.910]University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:01:55.870]and we recognize service in five-year increments.
- [00:01:58.780]So five, 10, 15, 20,
- [00:02:00.740]all the way up to this year 60 year employee.
- [00:02:05.690]It's a tradition here.
- [00:02:07.340]We would do a little differently this year as a reception
- [00:02:10.300]where people came to the reception,
- [00:02:12.460]Rick Alloway and our journalism college does a kind of
- [00:02:15.210]recounting of what those times when they came to the
- [00:02:18.500]university were logged and thinking about 60 years ago,
- [00:02:20.890]it was a well a long time ago, 1961.
- [00:02:25.390]So this year we marked milestones of service for 977 of
- [00:02:30.063]those employees.
- [00:02:31.900]A total of 13,705 cumulative years of employment
- [00:02:36.970]across those folks in service to the
- [00:02:39.480]University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:02:41.810]Eight who have served for 45 years,
- [00:02:44.940]three who has served for 50 years.
- [00:02:47.500]Professor Jim Van Etten at our plant pathology department,
- [00:02:50.370]also a member of the National Academy of Sciences
- [00:02:53.210]has served 55 years on the faculty here.
- [00:02:57.070]And then Ron Hall with Nebraska Public Media
- [00:03:01.070]has served 60 years.
- [00:03:03.160]And I'll just put that in mind.
- [00:03:04.650]I turned 60 this year, so 60 years since 1961,
- [00:03:09.710]just a remarkable commitment to the university of the state
- [00:03:12.870]for these folks and their professional lives and what they
- [00:03:15.350]have devoted to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:03:18.590]I go to bed every night and I wake up every morning thankful
- [00:03:21.890]for our people.
- [00:03:23.690]So you know how they serve the university and all across the
- [00:03:27.760]state of Nebraska.
- [00:03:28.790]And it was a special day last week to be able to celebrate
- [00:03:31.760]these service milestones.
- [00:03:33.143]( Greg) Congratulation to all of
- [00:03:34.430]the matters remarkable.
- [00:03:35.320]Well, we're nearing the end of the fall semester,
- [00:03:37.610]and this is the first with the new school of computing.
- [00:03:40.790]What does having the school of computing in place mean for
- [00:03:43.640]this university and for our state.
- [00:03:45.490]Well Greg, we've been working for the last couple
- [00:03:47.900]of years now on the next generation of our
- [00:03:51.560]what is now the School of Computing before becoming the
- [00:03:56.070]School of Computing officially this past month
- [00:03:59.230]The Department of Computer Science and Engineering made up
- [00:04:02.500]our program in Computer Science and Engineering.
- [00:04:04.730]It was a split department between the College
- [00:04:07.530]of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering.
- [00:04:10.930]With the way computing permeates every aspect
- [00:04:14.060]of our society today and how essential it is to
- [00:04:16.710]Nebraska business and particularly tech business,
- [00:04:20.550]we have elevated computing to a school now,
- [00:04:24.810]wholly within Nebraska engineering,
- [00:04:26.880]the College of engineering
- [00:04:28.630]and have elevated our programs
- [00:04:30.460]adding faculty, adding staff, adding to this area.
- [00:04:34.740]that's so important in the future.
- [00:04:37.130]The founding director of the school is Marilyn Wolf who
- [00:04:40.260]earned all of her degrees from Stanford University joined us
- [00:04:43.500]two years ago to lead
- [00:04:45.230]the Computer Science and Engineering Department at that time
- [00:04:48.800]came from Georgia Tech where she had been
- [00:04:50.960]on the faculty before.
- [00:04:52.870]Currently the School of Computing now includes
- [00:04:56.650]nearly 1000 undergraduate and graduate students,
- [00:04:59.450]more than 40 faculty members in these areas
- [00:05:02.400]offering degrees in Computer Science,
- [00:05:04.170]Computer Engineering, Software Engineering.
- [00:05:06.330]We're one of few programs in the country that offer an
- [00:05:09.350]undergraduate program in Software Engineering
- [00:05:12.160]and a new major in Data Science is being developed currently
- [00:05:15.820]to be added to the school's offerings.
- [00:05:18.570]So the School of Computing big deal,
- [00:05:20.720]very pleased for that now to be launched
- [00:05:24.440]in the Nebraska College of Engineering,
- [00:05:26.690]raising the profile of the university and a reputation in
- [00:05:29.560]the area of computing.
- [00:05:31.080](Greg) Fantastic Well, well earned
- [00:05:33.850]for that group right there.
- [00:05:34.990]We appreciate your updates each and every week.
- [00:05:37.190]This is our last chance on a football broadcast for awhile.
- [00:05:39.990]We'll catch up with you a few times during the basketball
- [00:05:41.620]season enjoy this one today.
- [00:05:43.197](Chan. Ronnie) I'm gonna enjoy it very much sir,
- [00:05:44.570]go big red.
- [00:05:45.521](Greg) Ronnie Green with us here on candid kickoff.
- [00:05:47.630]Matt Coney is back with our big 10 blitz.
- [00:05:49.720]That's coming up next.
