- [00:00:00.170]Welcome back, it's halftime at the Huskers Black Friday
- [00:00:02.410]matchup today against the Iowa Hawkeyes,
- [00:00:04.370]a final game of the regular season for the Big Red.
- [00:00:06.600]And as we do each of the week at half time, a chance to talk
- [00:00:08.900]to the President of the University of Nebraska, Ted Carter.
- [00:00:12.390]To start off with,
- [00:00:13.640]yesterday was a big day for family, friends.
- [00:00:16.540]As we celebrate Thanksgiving,
- [00:00:17.870]I'm wondering what you're most grateful for here this year.
- [00:00:20.800]Well, like all Nebraskans, I am first and foremost
- [00:00:23.520]thankful for my family, my wife, Linda,
- [00:00:25.990]our two adult children reminds me every day
- [00:00:28.770]of what's most important to us.
- [00:00:30.150]And I'm also grateful for the work that we do in higher ed,
- [00:00:33.430]especially here at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:00:35.730]There's an awful lot to be proud of, so much great momentum,
- [00:00:39.360]and I'm thankful for a successful completion
- [00:00:41.350]of the fall semester on all of our campuses.
- [00:00:43.490]We've kept our faculty and our staff and our students
- [00:00:45.880]especially safe, so lots to be grateful for.
- [00:00:49.750]You've compiled a top five list
- [00:00:52.060]of things that you're grateful for.
- [00:00:53.390]So let's get started with your number five.
- [00:00:56.630]Well, number five for me is our students.
- [00:00:59.530]I'm very excited about our young people
- [00:01:01.330]that have made their choice to pursue their dreams.
- [00:01:04.580]These are the young people
- [00:01:05.630]that are gonna be tomorrow's doctors and nurses,
- [00:01:07.660]farmers, ranchers, programmers and teachers,
- [00:01:10.420]our future workforce.
- [00:01:12.510]And you have to ask yourself,
- [00:01:14.050]why did they choose University of Nebraska?
- [00:01:16.110]And I would just say it's excellent, affordable education.
- [00:01:20.920]And while many universities across the nation
- [00:01:23.030]have had enrollment drop, ours has grown.
- [00:01:25.780]So despite the impacts of COVID-19,
- [00:01:28.640]we still have more than 51,000 students
- [00:01:31.030]enrolled across our university this year,
- [00:01:33.060]and we plan and intend to grow that number.
- [00:01:35.780]So I am just so thankful for our students.
- [00:01:38.450]All right, let's move on to number four
- [00:01:39.940]of the top five things you're grateful for.
- [00:01:41.910]Well, I would just say research.
- [00:01:44.040]Research across our entire annual system.
- [00:01:46.950]These are talking about our faculty and staff experts
- [00:01:50.420]who are focused on solving most pressing challenges
- [00:01:53.560]facing our state, our nation and our world,
- [00:01:55.920]helping to manage and treat highly infectious diseases
- [00:01:58.710]like the pandemic we find ourselves in,
- [00:02:01.270]protecting our military and keeping our country safe,
- [00:02:04.090]looking for ways to ensure young kids
- [00:02:06.080]growing up in poverty have an equal playing field,
- [00:02:09.000]finding a cure for cancer,
- [00:02:10.700]the deadly disease affecting so many Nebraskans,
- [00:02:13.770]and producing more crop per drop to feed a growing world.
- [00:02:18.090]So these men and women that are here on our campuses,
- [00:02:20.280]they are transforming lives here in Nebraska
- [00:02:22.520]and around the world.
- [00:02:23.420]A certainly life-changing research
- [00:02:24.720]we're definitely grateful for.
- [00:02:26.560]What about number three?
- [00:02:28.360]So I wanna talk about our faculty and staff in particular,
- [00:02:31.720]always impressed at how much talent is there
- [00:02:34.850]and particularly how they came together
- [00:02:36.850]during the challenging times to support our students.
- [00:02:39.150]I don't think most folks realize
- [00:02:41.150]how much extra work they put in,
- [00:02:43.080]to either teach remotely when it was required,
- [00:02:46.130]go back to teaching in person with some amount of risk,
- [00:02:48.990]and also the type of hybrid modality
- [00:02:51.500]or type of teaching we're doing
- [00:02:53.010]where we're doing in person but videotaping,
- [00:02:55.320]so that students can have recorded sessions
- [00:02:57.860]to go back and look at,
- [00:02:59.110]or for students that can't be there,
- [00:03:00.980]take those courses remotely.
- [00:03:02.340]So, a great part of our momentum today is our faculty
- [00:03:06.100]and the people that we serve our university alongside with.
- [00:03:09.300]Fantastic, what's number two then on your list
- [00:03:11.340]of top five things that you're thankful for?
- [00:03:13.350]Well, our strong partnerships.
- [00:03:15.050]We continue to help Nebraskans
- [00:03:16.610]thanks to the strong commitments from the State of Nebraska,
- [00:03:21.150]from the Governor to the Legislature,
- [00:03:22.790]as well as our private donors, the business community,
- [00:03:25.750]the education community and partners in industry
- [00:03:28.180]across the State.
- [00:03:29.560]These partnerships, sometimes I call them
- [00:03:31.480]the circles of influence are critical events in our work.
- [00:03:35.380]Right, if I had a drum, I would give you a drum roll
- [00:03:37.230]at number one for the things you're grateful for
- [00:03:39.070]here on Thanksgiving.
- [00:03:39.970]Well, there's no doubt it's the people of Nebraska,
- [00:03:42.260]the entire population,
- [00:03:43.510]all 2 million people who stayed in Nebraska.
- [00:03:46.080]I'm thankful to live in a state
- [00:03:47.400]that loves and supports its university,
- [00:03:49.290]believes in public education.
- [00:03:51.360]I said it before, I'll say it again,
- [00:03:53.070]we have the greatest fans in the country,
- [00:03:54.930]they love their team, they love their universe,
- [00:03:57.300]their university, and they care about success.
- [00:04:00.370]So the University of Nebraska is surrounded
- [00:04:02.360]by people who believe in what we do.
- [00:04:04.770]And there really is no place like Nebraska.
- [00:04:07.620]Fantastic, I will say this
- [00:04:09.040]on behalf of all of Husker Nation,
- [00:04:10.390]we're thankful for you Thank you.
- [00:04:11.780]for being here as our President.
- [00:04:13.480]Have a wonderful weekend.
- [00:04:14.500]Thank you. Ted Carter with us here
- [00:04:16.010]at half time, we've got more half time coming up next.
