- [00:00:00.000](upbeat clapping and drum)
- [00:00:03.700]So Jennifer we're living in times
- [00:00:05.580]unlike any we've seen in 100 years.
- [00:00:08.750]And in supply chain management, your field,
- [00:00:11.530]and what you work in and lead here at the university,
- [00:00:14.020]what's it like to be in this time, in that field?
- [00:00:17.640]It's definitely the case that we've never seen
- [00:00:19.520]disruptions of this magnitude or this global scale before.
- [00:00:23.050]And so that creates a unique experience,
- [00:00:26.130]both for teaching and research.
- [00:00:27.760]When supply chains work well,
- [00:00:29.120]they're invisible to the average person
- [00:00:31.290]and we had well-designed, well-managed supply chains
- [00:00:34.180]capable of efficiently producing and delivering
- [00:00:37.350]a huge variety of products.
- [00:00:39.630]And that was unappreciated.
- [00:00:41.130]That was unseen, but not anymore.
- [00:00:44.150]This really is an opportunity for us
- [00:00:45.620]to highlight the importance of what we do.
- [00:00:47.630]How do you bring that moment into the classroom?
- [00:00:51.130]Oh, I think the theories,
- [00:00:52.560]the methods that we teach haven't changed,
- [00:00:54.550]but how we teach them have changed quite a bit.
- [00:00:57.390]We've always taught the mathematics of queuing theory
- [00:01:01.200]to talk about why congestion occurs in a supply chain.
- [00:01:04.700]And we would traditionally talk about
- [00:01:06.640]lines of customers at a grocery store
- [00:01:08.930]or piles of work in process inventory
- [00:01:11.570]at a manufacturing facility to explain that.
- [00:01:14.690]But now of course,
- [00:01:15.523]we talk about the boats off the coast of California
- [00:01:18.920]waiting to dock and unload, and we can use the same theory
- [00:01:23.010]to say, "Why is that happening?
- [00:01:24.450]What's the cause?"
- [00:01:25.690]But then also to help our students think critically
- [00:01:28.140]about the solutions to that.
- [00:01:30.190]So our students are going through this time as well.
- [00:01:32.640]How do you think that living through this moment,
- [00:01:36.250]they will, what they'll take away from it
- [00:01:38.030]in supply chain management?
- [00:01:40.020]Yeah, I mean, for our students,
- [00:01:41.070]we've always told them that supply chains impact every
- [00:01:43.960]industry, every business, every consumer.
- [00:01:47.070]And to be honest,
- [00:01:47.903]I don't know that they fully got that before,
- [00:01:49.620]but they do now.
- [00:01:50.950]And they're inspired. They're motivated to learn more.
- [00:01:53.990]They're asking more questions in class
- [00:01:56.120]and they're challenging what we say more.
- [00:01:58.280]They really are invested in this
- [00:02:00.670]based on everything we've been through
- [00:02:02.330]in the past two years.
- [00:02:03.978]Well, it's true that this is a really unique time.
- [00:02:07.930]And the supply chain management program
- [00:02:09.830]in our College of Business
- [00:02:11.000]is up to the challenge of meeting that time
- [00:02:13.370]and preparing our students for the future.
- [00:02:15.900]Thank you.
