- [00:00:01.240]The moment where I,
- [00:00:02.570]my leadership and my experiences as a student,
- [00:00:05.320]all home together to really launch
- [00:00:07.900]was when I founded the BSU care bag initiative.
- [00:00:11.660]So it was in the summer of 2020.
- [00:00:13.270]A lot of us black students were watching
- [00:00:15.020]George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Briana Taylor.
- [00:00:17.310]And it seemed like life after life being lost
- [00:00:20.070]all across the media.
- [00:00:21.420]And at the same time,
- [00:00:23.100]all the national news channels were telling us that
- [00:00:25.070]black communities in the U S were dying at a higher rate.
- [00:00:28.660]And, sorry.
- [00:00:31.270]As a student and as a black woman living in this country,
- [00:00:33.930]I understood that I had a duty to my community.
- [00:00:36.750]So I called up my friends that go here to UNL.
- [00:00:39.190]And we were like, hey, like we have to do something.
- [00:00:41.240]We really felt a strong sense of urgency as well.
- [00:00:45.920]So we got together,
- [00:00:46.980]we created this graphic on Canva,
- [00:00:48.780]and like, we sent it out on our social medias
- [00:00:50.670]and we're just asking for donations.
- [00:00:52.780]We definitely thought we were going to get like
- [00:00:54.137]$100, $200.
- [00:00:55.940]I woke up the next morning to like
- [00:00:57.360]a thousand dollars in our Venmo account.
- [00:00:59.560]I had breakfast, $7,000 in our Venmo account,
- [00:01:03.280]had lunch, It was $14,000 in our Venmo account.
- [00:01:06.020]So we definitely like launched off.
- [00:01:08.070]And that same day we went to Walmart
- [00:01:10.120]and started gathering supplies.
- [00:01:11.960]We got disinfection wipes, groceries,
- [00:01:14.820]really the needed items,
- [00:01:16.020]wellness items to help people combat the COVID-19 pandemic,
- [00:01:21.070]and also give them the literal resources they needed
- [00:01:23.290]to stay healthy during that time.
- [00:01:25.820]And we drove up to UNL
- [00:01:26.960]and we told everyone that signed up for a care bag
- [00:01:28.730]to meet us at the loop,
- [00:01:30.180]right by the Jackie Gaughan multicultural center.
- [00:01:32.790]We couldn't even find parking
- [00:01:34.000]because of how many people had showed up
- [00:01:35.310]to get a care bag that day.
- [00:01:37.560]And I'll never forget the one mother we met,
- [00:01:40.980]she was a mother, a single mother of four,
- [00:01:43.330]who came up to us and started bawling her eyes out
- [00:01:46.010]and telling us that,
- [00:01:47.050]because of this initiative and because of the groceries
- [00:01:50.670]that we gave her that week,
- [00:01:51.610]it was going to help her survive the next two weeks
- [00:01:53.400]of the pandemic. And I guess that really kind of hit home,
- [00:01:56.480]like, my duty that I have to like the communities
- [00:01:59.530]outside of UNL.
- [00:02:00.430]And also the skills and resources
- [00:02:02.130]that UNL has helped me cultivate and learn
- [00:02:04.250]and really gather to help my peers and I
- [00:02:07.360]come together to create such, like, an impactful initiative.
- [00:02:10.450]And I definitely will always remember that moment
- [00:02:12.760]for the rest of my life.
