- [00:00:00.250]Welcome back Canada kickoff,
- [00:00:01.700]Huskers and Badgers here this afternoon.
- [00:00:04.100]It is a 2:40 kickoff time for the Big Red and Wisconsin,
- [00:00:08.030]the Freedom Trophy on the line today.
- [00:00:10.000]And as we do each and every week,
- [00:00:11.250]a chance to sit down and chat with the chancellor
- [00:00:13.910]from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:16.290]And chancellor, it's been a couple of weeks since we chatted
- [00:00:18.960]after the bi-week last week, there's been a lot of news
- [00:00:21.410]as it relates to the football program
- [00:00:23.300]with some changes along the coaching staff.
- [00:00:26.230]But I know the team has been hard at work
- [00:00:28.060]to get ready for this game.
- [00:00:29.354]How do you think this group will respond today?
- [00:00:33.890]Well, again Greg,
- [00:00:34.800]certainly beyond the football field
- [00:00:36.690]to these last couple of years,
- [00:00:38.570]we've seen how many challenges there are
- [00:00:42.490]and how leaders have had to be ready to pivot
- [00:00:44.970]and it doesn't necessarily mean that responding
- [00:00:47.670]to change is easy,
- [00:00:49.670]but that goes with the territory of leadership.
- [00:00:52.140]And I'm absolutely confident in coach Scott Frost.
- [00:00:55.670]No one wants to win in Nebraska more than he does
- [00:00:59.780]and wants Nebraska to win more than he does.
- [00:01:03.300]So looking forward to the future of his leadership
- [00:01:07.790]of our football program,
- [00:01:09.840]and then coming off another bi-week,
- [00:01:11.690]we have another huge challenge in front of us today
- [00:01:14.060]with the Badgers in Madison.
- [00:01:16.300]I'm excited to see how our team matches up
- [00:01:18.230]and performs again against here yet another top 25 team
- [00:01:21.890]this season.
- [00:01:22.723]Seems like we say that practically every week
- [00:01:24.360]throughout this football season.
- [00:01:25.988]Sure does.
- [00:01:26.821]Well, chancellor,
- [00:01:27.654]we know how much former Huskers matter
- [00:01:29.280]to the football program and vice versa,
- [00:01:31.460]alumni across the university are very important
- [00:01:34.350]to every program across this campus.
- [00:01:36.360]At our last football game,
- [00:01:38.290]I know you had the opportunity to honor an alumnus
- [00:01:41.500]who is giving back in a big way.
- [00:01:44.190]Tell us a little bit about this.
- [00:01:47.140]Well, we did have the opportunity on the field
- [00:01:49.520]in our last game against Ohio State in Memorial Stadium
- [00:01:53.230]to honor Paul Engler.
- [00:01:55.520]Paul is a legend in the cattle business,
- [00:01:58.780]and the cattle feeding business in particular.
- [00:02:01.330]He's a 1951 Nebraska graduate in agriculture,
- [00:02:05.430]grew up in Bassett, Nebraska.
- [00:02:07.880]And he built what became
- [00:02:10.140]the largest cattle feeding enterprise in the world
- [00:02:13.460]in Cactus Feeders based out of Amarillo, Texas,
- [00:02:17.700]in the panhandle of Texas.
- [00:02:20.500]And about 11 years ago, in 2010,
- [00:02:24.540]Paul made a significant gift
- [00:02:26.780]to the Institute of Ag and Natural Resources here
- [00:02:29.990]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:02:32.130]and founding the Engler Entrepreneurship Program
- [00:02:35.300]with a $20 million gift to get that program at work.
- [00:02:40.670]And his vision was that graduates would return
- [00:02:44.450]to their communities,
- [00:02:46.500]inspire to make a lasting impact on Nebraska and the world
- [00:02:50.999]through business development, through entrepreneurship.
- [00:02:53.870]And we certainly have seen that happen in the first 11 years
- [00:02:57.760]of the Engler program.
- [00:02:59.760]It's really transforming entrepreneurship opportunities,
- [00:03:02.750]not just in agriculture, but even more broadly
- [00:03:06.420]in industries across the board.
- [00:03:08.280]And we have a large number of success stories
- [00:03:11.050]of graduates of the program already,
- [00:03:13.890]successful alumni that are applying what they've learned
- [00:03:17.070]into business development.
- [00:03:19.290]We were scheduled to celebrate the 10th anniversary
- [00:03:23.290]of the Engler agribusiness entrepreneurship program
- [00:03:26.720]last year during the pandemic.
- [00:03:29.660]We're unable to do that, of course,
- [00:03:31.390]with the way that things played out last fall.
- [00:03:34.480]So we were pleased to be able to do that
- [00:03:36.690]with the Engler board during the Ohio State game weekend.
- [00:03:41.710]They celebrated the new space that the program is housed in.
- [00:03:46.050]They're now at the top floor
- [00:03:47.340]of the Dinsdale Family Learning Commons building
- [00:03:51.100]that's been renovated and rebuilt on east campus.
- [00:03:55.370]They were excited about that.
- [00:03:57.060]So Paul is a perfect example of a Nebraska alum
- [00:04:02.560]that's used his generosity, his vision,
- [00:04:04.960]his success, to work with the university
- [00:04:07.480]to create opportunities for our students
- [00:04:09.570]and for Nebraska in the future.
- [00:04:10.940]It's great to honor him.
- [00:04:11.850]Oh, that is fantastic.
- [00:04:12.920]Again, visiting with chancellor Ronnie Green here
- [00:04:14.720]on Canada to kickoff.
- [00:04:16.280]We have a very cool fall-like day up here in Madison.
- [00:04:19.490]Chancellor today we all know that that colder weather
- [00:04:22.110]is about to come rushing in for us as we...
- [00:04:25.040]To get to the Thanksgiving and then all the holidays
- [00:04:27.580]that are coming up.
- [00:04:28.420]I hear you have some engineers researching
- [00:04:31.060]wearable technology to help keep us all warmer
- [00:04:34.280]during the winter months.
- [00:04:35.210]What can you tell us about this?
- [00:04:37.610]Well, we've already had a few brushes
- [00:04:39.820]with cold weather this season and more to come, as you say,
- [00:04:43.930]getting us more familiar back with our sweaters
- [00:04:46.290]and winter coats and getting ready for the season,
- [00:04:49.170]but in College of Engineering and Nebraska engineering
- [00:04:52.110]and our mechanical and materials engineering department
- [00:04:54.740]with support from NASA and the Nebraska Research Initiative,
- [00:04:59.570]we have researchers who were experimenting with liquid metal
- [00:05:03.630]for a number of potential applications,
- [00:05:05.990]including ways to improve our winter clothing as wearables.
- [00:05:10.870]For example, a lot of the big tool companies
- [00:05:14.160]have these heated jackets and gear to help workers stay warm
- [00:05:17.720]in cold environments.
- [00:05:19.480]But a drawback of it is that the gear
- [00:05:21.600]is often impractically heavy to wear.
- [00:05:25.430]And our researchers are studying how to improve
- [00:05:28.270]on that material to achieve more uniform heating
- [00:05:31.510]throughout a jacket and eliminate hotspots
- [00:05:34.550]without restricting the motion of the person wearing it
- [00:05:37.180]and making it lighter.
- [00:05:39.000]Another application for soft thermally conductive material
- [00:05:42.920]is also in electronics with interface materials
- [00:05:46.870]that carry substantial amounts of heat from processors
- [00:05:50.130]to liquid cooling.
- [00:05:51.060]So the PlayStation 5 gaming console
- [00:05:54.230]already uses liquid metal for that very purpose.
- [00:05:57.720]So we could see other electronics improved
- [00:06:00.470]by this research.
- [00:06:02.360]Aaron Mark Vica is the faculty member
- [00:06:05.360]that's leading this effort in mechanical
- [00:06:07.590]and materials engineering in Nebraska engineering.
- [00:06:10.730]He has a doctoral student, Ethan Cranes and colleagues there
- [00:06:13.770]that are working as part of that team.
- [00:06:16.210]Eric was actually just recognized a few weeks ago now
- [00:06:20.650]by the NUtech Ventures, our commercial tech transfer arm
- [00:06:24.720]for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:06:27.160]with the 2021 NUtech Ventures emerging innovator of the year
- [00:06:32.660]for his work in directing the smart materials
- [00:06:34.990]and robotics lab there
- [00:06:36.170]in mechanical and materials engineering.
- [00:06:37.880]So exciting work.
- [00:06:40.080]It's innovative work that will have big application here
- [00:06:43.200]and wearables happening in Nebraska engineering.
- [00:06:46.500]That is fascinating stuff.
- [00:06:48.070]Certainly appreciate you letting us in on that.
- [00:06:50.250]There are so many projects like that
- [00:06:51.780]throughout the university
- [00:06:52.840]that I think would just totally fascinate all
- [00:06:55.270]of our fans out there.
- [00:06:56.210]Well, chancellor, we appreciate it.
- [00:06:57.450]Enjoy the game today.
- [00:06:59.030]Happy Thanksgiving to you and the Green family.
- [00:07:01.350]We look forward to catching up with you next week
- [00:07:03.570]for the Black Friday, the final game of the regular season
- [00:07:06.240]back in Lincoln against Iowa.
- [00:07:08.480]You bet. Go Big Red.
- [00:07:09.896]There he is.
- [00:07:10.729]Ronnie Green with us here on Countdown To Kickoff.
- [00:07:12.480]When we come back, Matt Coney
- [00:07:14.080]will take a little spin around the conference
- [00:07:15.910]with the Big Ten Blitz.
- [00:07:17.010]That is next.
