- [00:00:00.250]Welcome back it's halftime
- [00:00:01.340]of the Huskers matchup today against the Wisconsin badgers
- [00:00:03.910]and delighted to be joined as we are each and every week
- [00:00:05.590]by the president of university of Nebraska, Ted Carter.
- [00:00:08.510]Busy couple of weeks for Nebraska athletics.
- [00:00:11.120]What's, your message to Husker fans
- [00:00:13.250]as we close out this season?
- [00:00:15.030]Well, I think a it's unity of purpose
- [00:00:18.100]for who we are as Husker fans.
- [00:00:20.870]I've been here now long enough to witness and validate
- [00:00:24.160]that our fans are the best in the country.
- [00:00:26.580]And what makes our fans the best
- [00:00:28.670]is how much they care about their team.
- [00:00:30.440]And they show up.
- [00:00:32.180]And just makes me really proud
- [00:00:35.070]to be just a part of this university system,
- [00:00:37.320]to see the passion that our fans have.
- [00:00:40.160]So keeping the faith.
- [00:00:42.740]Very good.
- [00:00:43.573]You were a student athlete back in the day.
- [00:00:45.860]What's something maybe people don't realize
- [00:00:47.750]about what it takes to play sports at the collegiate level?
- [00:00:51.300]Well,
- [00:00:52.199]I think the biggest thing I would just say
- [00:00:53.032]is most people just can't really see the type of schedule
- [00:00:56.290]that our student athletes are keeping at.
- [00:00:58.940]I was a student athlete a long time ago.
- [00:01:01.360]Obviously we didn't have the diversion of cell phones
- [00:01:04.580]and the internet back then,
- [00:01:06.750]but we kept a busy schedule then.
- [00:01:08.840]Most of the students at the Naval academy
- [00:01:11.790]were all student athletes.
- [00:01:12.790]So we were all pretty busy,
- [00:01:14.470]but I think if people could really see
- [00:01:16.810]the insights schedule, what all of our athletes do,
- [00:01:19.210]doesn't matter what sport they are,
- [00:01:20.550]early morning workouts, you know,
- [00:01:22.570]the fact that they've got to maintain their diet,
- [00:01:24.480]make sure they're not just getting
- [00:01:25.700]the right number of calories, the right type of calories,
- [00:01:29.650]their schedules.
- [00:01:30.560]And you know, they're still students,
- [00:01:32.330]they're taking classes sometimes they're doing it, you know,
- [00:01:35.230]on the road or in transit.
- [00:01:37.980]I watched a football players
- [00:01:40.000]on airplane rides that I was on.
- [00:01:41.310]A lot of times they had books on the airplane studying,
- [00:01:43.550]and a lot of people just don't think that happens,
- [00:01:45.230]but it does.
- [00:01:46.790]So yeah,
- [00:01:47.700]maintaining a class schedule often a very full-time load
- [00:01:52.130]is what makes all this really special,
- [00:01:55.510]and of course at the end of the day, it's balance.
- [00:01:58.040]How do they stay focused on the game,
- [00:02:00.570]stay focused on delivering with results
- [00:02:03.930]and be a good student.
- [00:02:05.050]So, I have nothing but great respect for our athletes.
- [00:02:08.360]And I would just say that athletes in the big 10 in general
- [00:02:13.070]are exceptional.
- [00:02:13.990]Because our big 10 academics,
- [00:02:15.650]regardless of which school you're at,
- [00:02:16.870]but particularly here in Nebraska are outstanding.
- [00:02:19.443]Well put.
- [00:02:20.720]The four sport Season's wrapping up,
- [00:02:22.580]we're getting our winter sports getting going into right now
- [00:02:24.690]at UNL and across the university systems.
- [00:02:27.470]What are some of your thoughts
- [00:02:28.310]about some of the other Husker sports
- [00:02:30.080]and some of the athletics going on in the other campuses?
- [00:02:32.790]Yeah,
- [00:02:33.796]there's certainly something for everybody.
- [00:02:34.629]There's a lot to be excited about,
- [00:02:36.340]obviously Husker volleyball,
- [00:02:38.210]even though we had a couple of tough losses there,
- [00:02:40.730]coach John Cook has got us back in the hunt again,
- [00:02:43.590]a big game going on, leading up to this weekend,
- [00:02:47.730]just a couple left in the regular season
- [00:02:50.220]then into the big 10 playoffs, Loper football.
- [00:02:54.620]Oh boy,
- [00:02:55.453]Yeah.
- [00:02:56.373]Nine and two first time in the MIAA
- [00:02:58.750]in division two, playoffs in over a decade,
- [00:03:01.230]only the fifth time in program history.
- [00:03:03.510]So that's an exciting team to watch.
- [00:03:05.440]Are out there playing Western Colorado this weekend.
- [00:03:07.520]They'll probably be the underdog,
- [00:03:09.050]but don't count out the Lopers, they know how to win.
- [00:03:13.080]It's going to be a fun game.
- [00:03:14.180]And then we got a new athletic director
- [00:03:16.860]at the university of Nebraska Omaha, Adrian Dowell,
- [00:03:19.700]who was the associate athletic director at Creighton.
- [00:03:22.970]Great reputation, comes from Roanoke, Virginia,
- [00:03:26.520]went to school and did some work at West Virginia
- [00:03:28.810]was on the NCAA basketball committee.
- [00:03:31.740]So he's got a lot of great experience
- [00:03:33.410]and he's going to help get the Mavericks to the next level.
- [00:03:35.910]Fantastic.
- [00:03:36.743]And your Maverick hockey team,
- [00:03:37.576]you didn't throw your hockey in there.
- [00:03:39.130]I was hoping, you'd mentioned
- [00:03:40.000]the unbeaten, number one, thick cloud,
- [00:03:42.720]even though it's a split, they moved back up
- [00:03:44.610]they're in the top 10 number nine nationally.
- [00:03:46.420]So yeah, Maverick hockey is often running
- [00:03:49.880]they're up in Alaska this weekend
- [00:03:51.750]looking to do a sweep up there.
- [00:03:53.240]Best of luck out there to them.
- [00:03:54.530]getting visited in Nebraska, president,
- [00:03:56.030]Ted Carter here at halftime,
- [00:03:57.160]you're working on a number of exciting projects
- [00:03:58.950]that are going to benefit Nebraskans.
- [00:04:01.070]What's the latest going on across the university?
- [00:04:03.960]Well, the most exciting one
- [00:04:05.080]that we just announced is a new partnership
- [00:04:07.330]with the department of Homeland security
- [00:04:09.720]to grow the Homeland security workforce of the future.
- [00:04:13.180]So we just signed an agreement to work together,
- [00:04:15.640]to expand things like career support, internship,
- [00:04:18.480]and job opportunities for students.
- [00:04:20.890]We're going to be looking at opportunities in fields
- [00:04:22.710]like cybersecurity, intelligence, emergency management,
- [00:04:25.960]and others.
- [00:04:26.793]So, really excited about that.
- [00:04:28.260]And of course, we're taking another look
- [00:04:29.850]at our long range strategic plan.
- [00:04:31.530]This is for the entire university system.
- [00:04:33.960]And I'll just say, it's about one word repeated many times
- [00:04:36.930]growth, growth, growth.
- [00:04:39.640]Well, this is the time of year
- [00:04:40.810]that a lot of high school juniors, seniors
- [00:04:42.870]are home for the holidays talking to their family members
- [00:04:45.630]about what may be ahead for their futures.
- [00:04:47.330]I saw some campus tours going on
- [00:04:49.710]in Lincoln earlier this week,
- [00:04:51.090]what would you say to a young person
- [00:04:52.450]who's right now kind of contemplating
- [00:04:54.700]their options for the future?
- [00:04:56.460]Well, the first thing I would say
- [00:04:58.030]is the value proposition for post-secondary education
- [00:05:01.020]is really important.
- [00:05:01.960]Maybe more than it's ever been.
- [00:05:04.180]And with that, you really got to take a consideration,
- [00:05:06.940]a really good look at our university system.
- [00:05:09.230]We've got multiple campuses,
- [00:05:10.960]not just our flagship here in Lincoln,
- [00:05:12.670]but our rural campus out in Carney,
- [00:05:14.710]our urban campus in Omaha.
- [00:05:17.850]There's something for everybody.
- [00:05:19.130]And I hope everybody takes a chance to look at our campuses,
- [00:05:23.450]cause I think there's something for them.
- [00:05:26.060]Fantastic.
- [00:05:27.000]Enjoy the second half.
- [00:05:28.450]All right.
- [00:05:29.283]Thank you Greg.
- [00:05:30.116]President, Ted Carter with us here at halftime.
- [00:05:31.220]We've got more coming up next.
