[00:00:07.230]that I need to advance myself in the world of education,
[00:00:12.150]whether that means GRE prep or research skills,
[00:00:15.450]you know, McNair has given me the opportunity
[00:00:18.320]to do all of that and some.
[00:00:21.440]I got interested in my major
[00:00:22.730]because I've always liked solving puzzles
[00:00:24.930]and solving problems.
[00:00:26.620]So, engineering was one of those things
[00:00:28.930]where I could creatively use math and physics
[00:00:31.970]to creatively solve the world's problems.
[00:00:35.910]The part that's most beneficial
[00:00:37.730]with working with a faculty mentor is you have
[00:00:40.290]a real expert in your field
[00:00:41.890]and any question that you need answered
[00:00:44.100]is gonna be answered with honesty
[00:00:46.610]and lots of experience behind it.
[00:00:49.330]So not only technical issues that you have
[00:00:52.650]or issues with your research,
[00:00:54.710]you know, how to solve a problem
[00:00:56.150]or how to solve an equation.
[00:00:57.930]You get to ask questions about what it is to live
[00:01:01.260]the life of an engineer or a professor.
[00:01:05.050]So if you have any interest regarding what it's like
[00:01:08.480]to write papers or what it's like to be a professor
[00:01:11.040]or teach classes, you know, these types of things,
[00:01:14.280]you could see from a faculty mentor,
[00:01:16.940]and they can tell you their experience
[00:01:18.860]and what it's like to live that life.
[00:01:21.740]I think the McNair is a
[00:01:24.020]perfect opportunity to learn more about graduate study
[00:01:26.690]because not only are you working with research,
[00:01:31.040]but you're also working really closely with faculty,
[00:01:34.400]which is what you'll be doing in graduate school.
[00:01:37.320]So these things really help you
[00:01:40.870]learn about these experiences
[00:01:43.970]and live out these experiences
[00:01:45.860]like you would in grad school.
[00:01:47.820]I really enjoy working with McNair scholars
[00:01:50.130]because they come into the program
[00:01:53.220]and Noah has come into the program
[00:01:55.430]really with a sense of excitement and vigor
[00:02:00.230]and just enthusiasm for learning new things
[00:02:03.060]and doing new things and preparing himself for
[00:02:06.920]the next phase in graduate school.
[00:02:09.350]I've always enjoyed having
[00:02:10.630]undergraduate researchers in my lab.
[00:02:12.680]I find that they bring interesting ideas
[00:02:15.640]and they bring that enthusiasm
[00:02:17.760]that's kind of special to undergraduates
[00:02:20.540]who are looking forward to graduate school.
[00:02:23.000]It's also really exciting for me to see
[00:02:25.720]undergraduate researchers learn new skills
[00:02:28.800]and certainly exposing undergraduates
[00:02:31.780]to research opportunities does that.
[00:02:34.660]It's almost like a little break for me
[00:02:37.050]to go and advise an undergraduate researcher
[00:02:40.360]and have that freedom and flexibility
[00:02:43.320]and not feel constrained to as much, like timelines
[00:02:47.470]and budget and things like that.
[00:02:48.700]So it helps us, I think,
[00:02:50.800]as a group to think outside the box
[00:02:52.760]and to develop creative ideas
[00:02:55.420]and engineering solutions to the problems that
[00:02:58.010]are interesting to us personally and professionally.
