- [00:00:09.250](siren wailing)
- [00:00:14.487](bright music)
- [00:00:18.870]Hi, I am Audrey Rider with SDSU Extension
- [00:00:21.540]and the Early Childhood Field Specialist there.
- [00:00:24.480]I am gonna show you today how to make a fireman's hat.
- [00:00:28.530]There's simple supplies that you can get at home
- [00:00:31.590]or use in your center or your daycare,
- [00:00:34.350]and you can use this on field trips
- [00:00:36.270]or just to make it with a fun craft project.
- [00:00:40.080]So I'm put the fireman's hat on.
- [00:00:43.710]So the things you need are a paper plate;
- [00:00:47.000](bright music)
- [00:00:48.870]yellow paper, or it can be white paper,
- [00:00:50.940]and you can color it yellow for the badge;
- [00:00:53.790]markers and just any washable markers or crayons,
- [00:00:58.590]colored pencils, red and black, specifically,
- [00:01:03.390]and possibly yellow;
- [00:01:05.160]and scissors, I have child scissors here as well.
- [00:01:09.180]So what you do is you start out with coloring your plate.
- [00:01:12.570]Kids can color it all red, I've colored mine all red.
- [00:01:17.010]I have another example here where we just did something...
- [00:01:20.010]We just wanted to do this part red
- [00:01:22.230]on the top part of the hat and leave the rest white.
- [00:01:25.260]So it's up to the kids how they wanna color their hat.
- [00:01:28.132](bright music)
- [00:01:29.430]So I'm just gonna color the middle
- [00:01:30.990]for the sake of time today.
- [00:01:32.583](bright music) (marker scratching)
- [00:01:35.160]Now, what we're gonna do is take the scissors,
- [00:01:38.880]and we're going to make the top part of the hat, this part,
- [00:01:44.130]it'll flip up to make the hat.
- [00:01:46.230]So what we're gonna do is we're going to cut
- [00:01:49.200]basically a rainbow shape cut all the way around.
- [00:01:55.680]Teachers, if you have young kids,
- [00:01:57.780]you may need to help them start the cutting
- [00:02:00.030]or help them cut if they're too young.
- [00:02:02.070]I'm using kid-sized scissors.
- [00:02:03.654]They work the best for cutting
- [00:02:05.730]and getting around that circular area.
- [00:02:08.054](bright music)
- [00:02:14.280]So then you cut, like I said, cut like a rainbow.
- [00:02:17.820]All the way around.
- [00:02:19.923](bright music) (paper plate rustling)
- [00:02:25.770]So you get over
- [00:02:26.603]to about even to where you started your other hole.
- [00:02:31.230]And if it looks like you need to cut more down,
- [00:02:33.510]you can continue to cut more down to the side,
- [00:02:35.977](bright music) (paper plate rustling)
- [00:02:37.905]and I'll make you go down a little bit further.
- [00:02:41.100]There we go.
- [00:02:43.320]And then what I do is kind of just make a crease
- [00:02:46.830]with my fingers
- [00:02:48.510]so that it pops up like that or your fireman's hat, okay?
- [00:02:53.340]So now we have the hat part ready.
- [00:02:55.380]Now, we're gonna make the badge.
- [00:02:57.570]The badge can be any sort type of badge.
- [00:03:00.060]As you can see on mine, I just have fire department.
- [00:03:03.570]You can draw it out.
- [00:03:04.500]You can already have them drawn out
- [00:03:06.720]and cut out for the kids.
- [00:03:08.640]Whatever works best.
- [00:03:09.720]They can be circular.
- [00:03:11.700]I just made kind of mine the shield badge-looking thing,
- [00:03:14.910]but it can be whatever is easiest for the kids to draw on,
- [00:03:18.540]whatever's easy for you.
- [00:03:20.182](bright music)
- [00:03:29.190]So I draw out my badge.
- [00:03:32.220]Like I said, I'm using just yellow paper, typing paper.
- [00:03:36.900]But you can use, if you just have white paper,
- [00:03:38.670]they can color it yellow.
- [00:03:40.110]They can leave their badge white too as well.
- [00:03:43.260]I am going to just put Fire Department in the middle.
- [00:03:46.290]You can also put the name of your town's fire department.
- [00:03:50.880]If you're all from the town, maybe say the town of Henry,
- [00:03:54.180]that's where I'm from,
- [00:03:55.260]you could put Henry Fire Department.
- [00:03:57.720]You could put any type of thing.
- [00:04:00.360]Or you could like put Volunteer Fire Department
- [00:04:02.700]if you have volunteers that work on that fire department.
- [00:04:06.690]So then you cut your badge out.
- [00:04:09.256](bright music)
- [00:04:11.910]Then you'll take your badge,
- [00:04:13.710]and what you'll do is you'll use tape.
- [00:04:15.540]You'll need some sort of tape or even glue sticks work.
- [00:04:18.698]Anything that you might have in your center.
- [00:04:21.930]I'm just gonna use tape for right now.
- [00:04:23.965](bright music)
- [00:04:25.710]And you can put your badge on...
- [00:04:28.890]your hat.
- [00:04:31.467](bright music)
- [00:04:32.967]And then you have your fireman's hat.
- [00:04:35.160]So this is one I already created.
- [00:04:39.330]This is one I created today.
- [00:04:41.430]I have a bigger head 'cause I'm an adult,
- [00:04:42.870]but it'll fit the kids' size.
- [00:04:46.260]And you can, like I said,
- [00:04:48.090]all you really need is just yellow or white paper;
- [00:04:51.090]markers,
- [00:04:53.490]red, black, yellow if you need it, if you have white paper,
- [00:04:57.300]just the basic colors,
- [00:04:58.350]and it can be also colors, crayons, anything;
- [00:05:00.758]a paper plate; and tape and scissors
- [00:05:05.550]is all you need to do this fun fireman's hat.
- [00:05:09.090]I hope you've enjoyed it
- [00:05:10.050]and you can wear your hat to show your moms and dads
- [00:05:13.470]or wear it to the fire station when you go visit next.
- [00:05:16.320]Thanks.
- [00:05:17.314](bright music)
