- [00:00:03.630]Hello,
- [00:00:04.318]my name's Elvira Abrica
- [00:00:05.760]I'm an assistant professor in
- [00:00:08.053]Educational Administration,
- [00:00:09.540]and I work in higher education.
- [00:00:13.243]Before coming to UNL,
- [00:00:14.706]I worked in institutional research,
- [00:00:18.510]in the Office of
- [00:00:19.390]Institutional Effectiveness
- [00:00:20.563]at California State University
- [00:00:22.000]Fullerton.
- [00:00:23.136]And I also worked at
- [00:00:25.678]Norco College,
- [00:00:27.214]within the Riverside Community
- [00:00:28.543]College district in California.
- [00:00:30.360]So my background is in
- [00:00:32.222]institutional research,
- [00:00:33.690]assessment, and effectiveness.
- [00:00:36.390]And I've worked in two-year
- [00:00:37.812]and four-year contexts,
- [00:00:39.396]mostly in California.
- [00:00:41.010]I focus on the historical,
- [00:00:42.870]organizational,
- [00:00:44.000]and socio-historical context
- [00:00:46.273]of American higher education,
- [00:00:47.730]that shape
- [00:00:48.428]experiences and outcomes for
- [00:00:50.260]underrepresented students
- [00:00:51.402]in higher education.
- [00:00:52.804]My area of research
- [00:00:53.948]focuses on issues of
- [00:00:56.175]equity,
- [00:00:56.675]diversity,
- [00:00:57.231]and inclusion.
- [00:00:58.920]I engage conceptually,
- [00:01:00.619]theoretically,
- [00:01:02.248]and
- [00:01:03.360]empirically
- [00:01:04.502]the causes and consequences
- [00:01:06.870]of social oppression,
- [00:01:08.310]particularly racial oppression.
- [00:01:10.620]What I like most about our department is
- [00:01:12.752]that everyone works so collaboratively.
- [00:01:15.780]I've been fortunate to partner with
- [00:01:17.837]students on a number of research
- [00:01:20.400]presentations
- [00:01:21.632]and
- [00:01:22.884]publications.
- [00:01:24.090]And I've also gotten to work with a
- [00:01:25.362]number of my faculty colleagues
- [00:01:26.959]on several grant projects.
- [00:01:29.100]And so I think that's what makes the
- [00:01:31.832]department so strong is that we all work
- [00:01:34.170]collectively and
- [00:01:37.170]collaboratively on projects.
- [00:01:39.750]Successful students in our department
- [00:01:41.635]will come to the table with
- [00:01:44.430]things that they're interested in,
- [00:01:45.872]ideas,
- [00:01:47.017]experiences,
- [00:01:48.210]whether personal or professional
- [00:01:50.025]that they can draw upon in developing
- [00:01:52.179]their own research agenda.
- [00:01:53.850]I love working with students who
- [00:01:55.802]have some problem in their area of
- [00:01:58.440]educational practice
- [00:01:59.908]or have some experience that they
- [00:02:01.533]want to resolve or address
- [00:02:03.750]in their research
- [00:02:05.344]or their dissertation work.
- [00:02:06.600]And so I think successful students
- [00:02:08.532]are able to tap into
- [00:02:10.618]the problems in
- [00:02:11.580]the world around them,
- [00:02:12.688]the things they see
- [00:02:13.551]and want to change,
- [00:02:14.490]and they bring that to us and we help
- [00:02:16.525]develop their interests in that area
- [00:02:18.364]and support them
- [00:02:19.586]as they grow and develop
- [00:02:21.080]as scholar-practitioners.
