- [00:00:01.700]In this courtroom simulation set up
- [00:00:03.810]for our cameras student attorneys learn
- [00:00:06.170]how to represent the state's most vulnerable population.
- [00:00:09.690]Children.
- [00:00:10.610]There is a shortage of high quality attorneys
- [00:00:13.130]to represent families in juvenile court
- [00:00:15.710]because the traditional law school experience
- [00:00:18.050]does not provide you with the training and support you need
- [00:00:21.810]to be effective.
- [00:00:23.070]University of Nebraska Lincoln Law
- [00:00:24.780]Professor, Michelle Paxton
- [00:00:26.300]runs the Children's Justice Clinic.
- [00:00:28.930]For the Children's Justice Clinic
- [00:00:30.920]we're representing kids that have been abused or neglected
- [00:00:35.320]through no fault of their own.
- [00:00:37.540]And they're thrown into the messy world
- [00:00:40.500]of the juvenile court and historically
- [00:00:43.460]their voice didn't matter.
- [00:00:45.410]And so by having a program like this,
- [00:00:47.520]it ensures those kids have a fighter in their corner
- [00:00:51.150]who is going to be extremely zealous for what they want
- [00:00:55.190]and what is in their best interest.
- [00:00:57.170]The clinic gives third year law students
- [00:00:59.350]an opportunity to represent real children
- [00:01:01.890]who are going through the juvenile court system.
- [00:01:04.400]We partner with the center on children, families,
- [00:01:06.807]and the law to ensure student attorneys are learning
- [00:01:10.680]all the important skills they need
- [00:01:12.360]to be high quality attorneys.
- [00:01:14.320]And our judges are telling us that the advocacy we do
- [00:01:17.970]is the gold standard.
- [00:01:19.580]The program has worked so well
- [00:01:21.490]in Lancaster County, Paxton is now taking it
- [00:01:24.250]to Nebraska's rural counties,
- [00:01:25.970]which have the majority of child abuse and neglect cases
- [00:01:28.950]in the state.
- [00:01:30.130]The success of the Children's Justice Clinic prompted us
- [00:01:33.050]to expand the program to our rural communities
- [00:01:35.680]who desperately need attorneys to be effective advocates
- [00:01:38.970]in the juvenile court.
- [00:01:40.480]We will increase the availability and quality
- [00:01:43.550]of attorneys interested and willing to represent children
- [00:01:47.100]and families in juvenile court.
- [00:01:49.360]I love my job because children are
- [00:01:51.580]our most vulnerable population and they need a fighter
- [00:01:55.060]in their corner.
