[00:00:12.430]I made $4,200 a year and thought, man, look at me.

[00:00:23.220]We'd worked on at Channel 10, and we loved that.
[00:00:26.900]And the studio at Channel 10 had a pole in it,
[00:00:31.020]and you had to figure out what that poll was going to be,
[00:00:34.220]and sometimes it was a tree and sometimes it was a column,
[00:00:38.320]and we were always fastening flats to it,
[00:00:41.840]you know, for sets and things.
[00:00:43.850]Our studio, 40 by 40, and the basement
[00:00:47.450]of the Temple building, had no pole, and everybody.

[00:01:01.760]Was over at the State Historical Society and doing research,
[00:01:05.760]and somebody pointed out to me,
[00:01:07.257]"That's Maria Santos over there."
[00:01:10.950]And I thought, how do I get to meet her?
[00:01:15.150]So I went over and introduced myself.
[00:01:17.500]We were able to talk her into doing some TV shows.
[00:01:23.230]If I hadn't done that, that day,
[00:01:28.070]I would have missed knowing that woman.
[00:01:31.120]I knew her for 10 years.
[00:01:33.490]I used to sit on the floor and listened to her talk
[00:01:37.020]in her apartment at 422 Hudson street
[00:01:41.280]in the West Village in New York, and I was in heaven.

[00:01:50.809]Well, I think the biggest change are the new technologies
[00:01:54.650]and the access that we all have to information.
[00:01:59.130]That has changed our world.

[00:02:04.950]Public broadcasting, I think the mission
[00:02:07.130]has stayed consistent.
[00:02:09.280]I think the guiding light is to always, 24 hours a day,
[00:02:14.890]to the best of our knowledge, present the highest quality,
[00:02:20.170]whatever the genre, the highest quality we can afford
[00:02:24.710]or acquire or produce to give to the people of our country.
[00:02:34.680]That mission hasn't changed.
[00:02:37.240]The guiding thing is be inspired.
[00:02:40.170]You know, if you can inspire other people,
[00:02:43.730]they can accomplish anything.

[00:02:50.360]There were four of us and a secretary.
[00:02:53.600]The fact that that handful of people, of course it grew,
[00:02:58.330]and nobody does anything by themselves.
[00:03:01.520]We all stand on the shoulders of giants,
[00:03:05.330]but the fact that we were able then
[00:03:07.430]to convince the Nebraska legislature, and then after that,
[00:03:12.850]the whole state of Nebraska convinced them of the value
[00:03:18.800]of public broadcasting reaching into every home in Nebraska.
