- [00:00:06.630]I specialize in American politics.
- [00:00:10.340]I teach a current issues class for the honors program.
- [00:00:15.890]I also teach our presidency class.
- [00:00:18.820]But my main specialization is courts and the law.
- [00:00:23.700]Research focuses modern China.
- [00:00:26.110]And I teach courses on China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam.
- [00:00:31.080]We have so much polarization, political polarization.
- [00:00:35.890]And it's really hard for people to talk to each other,
- [00:00:39.330]to understand each other.
- [00:00:41.870]So in my classes we try to explain
- [00:00:46.170]why this has happened.
- [00:00:49.890]What the implications are.
- [00:00:52.860]Where it might go from here.
- [00:00:54.970]There's nothing you can do in your life
- [00:00:58.450]that will not in some way impact and be impacted
- [00:01:01.120]by East Asia.
- [00:01:02.982]It's a global world,
- [00:01:04.530]it all connects and you may never get to East Asia,
- [00:01:08.290]but you're impacted by what goes on there
- [00:01:11.420]and you need to kinda know something about them.
- [00:01:14.664](soft music)
- [00:01:17.640]A lot of my work
- [00:01:18.473]has actually been published and read in China.
- [00:01:20.960]So when I go there,
- [00:01:24.610]Chinese know me and know what I'm doing
- [00:01:26.930]and that's really very gratifying.
- [00:01:29.310]I'm proud of my teaching awards.
- [00:01:32.330]I'm also proud of the fact that I often keep in touch
- [00:01:37.160]with past students.
- [00:01:38.824](soft music)
- [00:01:42.300]The much greater diversity of the student body.
- [00:01:45.150]The addition of the honors program.
- [00:01:47.920]When I started,
- [00:01:48.840]when I would teach the survey
- [00:01:51.170]and I introduced Chinese cuisine
- [00:01:53.030]and how it related to cooking and things,
- [00:01:55.680]I would bring a walk to class
- [00:01:57.410]to show them what it looked like.
- [00:01:58.730]Well, now they can walk out with the student union
- [00:02:01.280]if they don't know already.
- [00:02:03.390]It's just a very different atmosphere.
- [00:02:05.610]When I came,
- [00:02:06.930]there was an effort to relandscape the campus
- [00:02:10.820]and it has made it much nicer.
- [00:02:12.851](soft music)
- [00:02:16.770]I won the ORCA Award,
- [00:02:18.090]Outstanding Research and Creativity Award,
- [00:02:20.590]which is a system-wide award.
- [00:02:22.580]And I felt like that really indicated
- [00:02:26.400]that my work was appreciated in the inner university.
- [00:02:29.490]I was very surprised to get that.
- [00:02:33.913]And it was a nice honor.
- [00:02:36.710]I really like teaching.
- [00:02:39.520]That's why I'm still here.
- [00:02:40.960]That's why I've been teaching in person
- [00:02:45.380]through the pandemic.
- [00:02:47.630]It's also why I continue teaching,
- [00:02:50.550]some years ago
- [00:02:52.360]once when I slipped on a patch of ice
- [00:02:55.880]and broke my jaw
- [00:02:58.340]and it was wired shut for eight weeks,
- [00:03:01.260]I could hardly talk,
- [00:03:03.260]but I continued teaching one of my courses.
- [00:03:06.510]I just like teaching.
- [00:03:08.201](upbeat music)
