- [00:00:04.050]Well, good afternoon. My name is Ronnie Green, I have the
- [00:00:06.690]pleasure and privilege of serving as the chancellor here at
- [00:00:09.540]the University of Nebraska– Lincoln. It is a very special
- [00:00:13.260]day today, as we are reaching a point where we are kicking
- [00:00:18.750]off officially the construction of planning that has gone
- [00:00:23.250]into play for a number of years now a wonderful new veterans
- [00:00:27.210]tribute for the University of Nebraska in honor of all
- [00:00:31.080]veterans in Nebraska. So it's a very special day. It's
- [00:00:36.000]fitting that we're gathering here in the Pershing Military
- [00:00:38.910]and Naval Sciences building were so many of our men and
- [00:00:41.970]women have trained and made a mark on our campus community
- [00:00:45.870]and our nation. They're an enduring reminder of the
- [00:00:50.070]sacrifices, the courage and the dedication, past, present
- [00:00:54.000]and future of the brave men and women who serve our country.
- [00:00:59.160]The Veterans tribute that I mentioned will be placed just
- [00:01:02.040]outside this building, including the entrance facade to the
- [00:01:06.030]purging building just immediately to our west on Memorial
- [00:01:10.680]Plaza. As one of the original tenants of the university's
- [00:01:15.150]land grant mission, remember, the Morrill Act had to do with
- [00:01:19.230]agricultural and mechanical and military science and arts,
- [00:01:23.970]military training of our young men and women has and
- [00:01:26.820]continues to be a source of pride at our institution. This
- [00:01:31.620]tribute kicked off in 2018, many of you who are here today,
- [00:01:36.600]were a part of that process, when we began shredding and
- [00:01:40.710]envisioning what a tribute could look like, for the
- [00:01:44.490]university. And you'll remember that was the year that we
- [00:01:48.210]were leading up in November of 2018, to the 100 anniversary
- [00:01:53.070]of the end of World War One. And when we place the plaques
- [00:01:57.090]inside of Memorial Stadium, that weekend, as we celebrated
- [00:02:02.430]of the University of Nebraska students who were in World War
- [00:02:06.960]Two that our stadium is honored, honors in and is named
- [00:02:11.220]after the work has continued through this time period. And
- [00:02:15.930]even though it's not in the script, today, I'm going to do
- [00:02:18.510]this because it's well deserved. Michelle Waite, who many of
- [00:02:23.580]you know and are privileged to work with a member of our
- [00:02:28.080]senior staff and government and military relations has
- [00:02:31.680]worked tirelessly on this effort over a period of years, as
- [00:02:36.030]you all know, and I want to give Michelle a big shout out
- [00:02:38.850]today and ask you to join me in giving her a round of
- [00:02:41.370]applause.
- [00:02:52.470]Now, please rise if you were able for our national anthem.
- [00:02:56.190]Today's joint Color Guard is comprised of members of the
- [00:02:59.070]University of Nebraska's Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air
- [00:03:02.610]Force and Space Force ROTC detachments pursuant to an act of
- [00:03:07.770]Congress those who have served in the military may salute
- [00:03:11.160]even though not in uniform. Gentlemen, please remove your
- [00:03:14.340]hats
- [00:05:46.370]Forward march. Left, left, left right.
- [00:06:24.170]Thank you, please be seated. We have several folks to have
- [00:06:31.310]an opportunity to speak today. Before we start with that
- [00:06:35.060]process, I also want to thank the veterans who were in
- [00:06:39.230]attendance today. I know there are a number of you who were
- [00:06:42.530]part of this planning process, and helping us envision what
- [00:06:47.120]this Veterans tribute could become for generations to come
- [00:06:50.510]for our university. Thank you for your leadership in that.
- [00:06:54.590]Thank you for your service to our country, certainly, as we
- [00:06:58.040]celebrate this time of year. And I know we also have in the
- [00:07:03.740]audience a number of people who have donated financially to
- [00:07:07.970]this project to bring it to bear and allow us to move
- [00:07:11.480]forward with his construction, envisioning seeing this
- [00:07:15.320]tribute next spring summer being completed on Memorial
- [00:07:19.760]Plaza. So thanks to all of you please give a round of
- [00:07:22.910]applause to all yourselves for that, for that contribution
- [00:07:26.630]to this.
- [00:07:32.330]And we're very pleased today to have with us University of
- [00:07:36.020]Nebraska President Ted Carter. And I know all of you
- [00:07:40.070]probably are most of you have been able to become familiar
- [00:07:43.850]with President Carter since he came here. Not too long ago.
- [00:07:48.440]He's now counting more than one year, I think in his
- [00:07:51.500]vernacular, in late 2019. When he came here to join us as
- [00:07:58.070]the president of the University of Nebraska system. He, you
- [00:08:01.940]know, his military career. And you know, the service that he
- [00:08:06.170]had personally over his life, and the breadth of his career
- [00:08:10.760]that is, is, is amongst the highest in the country, as you
- [00:08:15.560]all know, and his service as superintendent of the US Naval
- [00:08:20.060]Academy for the longest period of time of any superintendent
- [00:08:24.410]of the Naval Academy in its history. Please join me in
- [00:08:29.120]welcoming University of Nebraska President Ted Carter.
- [00:08:41.630]Well, good afternoon, Chancellor Ronnie Green, thank you for
- [00:08:44.330]the very generous introduction. I'm absolutely thrilled to
- [00:08:47.660]be with fellow veterans, supporters of our ROTC program,
- [00:08:54.410]supporters of the University of Nebraska Lincoln, and quite
- [00:08:57.680]honestly supporters of our military across this amazing,
- [00:09:00.410]great State of Nebraska. You know, I'm now just over two
- [00:09:05.180]years that I've been here in the state I was introduced as a
- [00:09:08.630]priority candidate almost two years ago to this weekend. And
- [00:09:12.590]I really come to love how much this state appreciates its
- [00:09:17.450]veterans. And to be able to be part of this special day,
- [00:09:22.160]where we're going to put some really great amount of money
- [00:09:25.880]into upgrading this historic facility, sitting next to one
- [00:09:29.570]of the most iconic and historic football stadiums in the
- [00:09:32.870]nation. That is an actual actual living memorial to our
- [00:09:37.310]veterans. It just warms my heart, I still get tingles, just
- [00:09:41.000]saying. I mean, really, it is just that special. I'm also
- [00:09:44.960]just really excited to see the future of our military up
- [00:09:48.560]here with a color guard. I mean, were they not terrific. I
- [00:09:51.260]mean, we should give them a round of applause. I think
- [00:09:53.090]they're still out here.
- [00:09:59.900]I can't help but make a comment. You know, I served 38 years
- [00:10:02.990]plus my four years of Naval Academy 42 years of wearing a
- [00:10:05.510]uniform since I left high school in 1977. And I've always
- [00:10:10.070]just had this idea of the Army and the Navy, the Marine
- [00:10:12.530]Corps and the Air Force. And I gotta get on this, this
- [00:10:15.170]SpaceForce gig. I mean, it's still a little bit new to me,
- [00:10:18.470]the Guardians, but it's just so great to see Midshipman and
- [00:10:22.070]cadets in this phenomenal ROTC program, one of the best in
- [00:10:26.000]the country, and how fitting that we are celebrating what is
- [00:10:29.750]going to be happening here. In upgrading this facility. I
- [00:10:32.690]want to echo what Ronnie said earlier. Thank you so much of
- [00:10:36.500]the supporters that have invested financially in this
- [00:10:40.880]program. Now, it's also not a mistake that we're celebrating
- [00:10:45.800]this special occasion, right on the doorstep of Veterans
- [00:10:48.890]Day, we're going to be celebrating Military Appreciation Day
- [00:10:52.730]tomorrow with the Iowa State game is going to be very, very
- [00:10:55.610]special. We're going to have the four star Admiral Chas
- [00:10:58.490]Richard from US Strategic Command is going to be joining us.
- [00:11:01.400]And then of course, we're going to have a parade in Lincoln
- [00:11:03.830]on Sunday, and then going into Veterans Day. So how
- [00:11:06.710]appropriate that we just have a few minutes to pause and
- [00:11:10.580]reflect on what Veterans Day means in and as I took a few
- [00:11:14.690]minutes to think about what I might say, even though I just
- [00:11:17.000]have a couple minutes here. The one thing that is clear to
- [00:11:21.230]me, it's clear to me personally, that a state like Nebraska
- [00:11:25.430]would welcome in hire somebody that was in uniform for all
- [00:11:29.720]of his life, for myself and Linda and our family to come
- [00:11:32.840]here and be part of this university. It says so much about
- [00:11:36.770]the state that you would embrace somebody like that. And not
- [00:11:39.830]only that I didn't I don't live in Nebraska, I didn't come
- [00:11:42.380]from Nebraska. That's a pretty big statement. And I don't
- [00:11:45.770]that's not lost on me. On any day of the week. Every day I
- [00:11:48.830]get up, I remind myself of that. You know, there are over
- [00:11:51.830]112,000 veterans that live in the state of Nebraska. We're
- [00:11:55.970]not the most per capita in the country. But we're pretty
- [00:11:58.610]high up there. In this state does a lot for our veterans,
- [00:12:02.900]the tax laws are changing to the benefit of veterans, the VA
- [00:12:06.470]hospital, the care. And you know, let's face it, we know not
- [00:12:10.340]all veterans are having a good life. They struggle, they
- [00:12:13.220]struggle with mental health. They struggle with poverty,
- [00:12:16.910]they struggle with homelessness. And we sometimes shy away
- [00:12:20.690]from those difficult conversations. But I will tell you, my
- [00:12:23.660]observation is this state pays attention to that. And it's
- [00:12:27.200]really important, we have to take care of our veterans. I've
- [00:12:31.130]had a chance to speak a lot on the issues of higher
- [00:12:33.980]education lately. And one of the things that I frame is one
- [00:12:37.910]of the most difficult problems we have as a nation going
- [00:12:40.730]forward is the distrust of almost anybody in anything that's
- [00:12:46.130]in a position of leadership or power. But the one
- [00:12:50.150]organization that Americans don't distrust the one
- [00:12:53.240]organization that people in the United States still care
- [00:12:56.180]for, and believe in is our veterans. As we think about you
- [00:13:00.740]know who is alive still amongst us here in the state of
- [00:13:03.650]Nebraska, we still have a world war two veteran alive. We
- [00:13:06.500]still have Korean War veterans, Vietnam veterans, we're
- [00:13:08.960]starting to lose that population now at a higher rate, the
- [00:13:12.980]Cold War veterans, the Persian Gulf and Global War on Terror
- [00:13:17.300]veterans. This is a state that embraces their veterans. And
- [00:13:23.810]I'm really, really proud to be a small part of it. And this
- [00:13:26.600]is going to be a spectacular addition to our university
- [00:13:29.690]campus to this entire Memorial Stadium complex. So
- [00:13:33.380]congratulations, Ronnie, to you and your team, Michelle, all
- [00:13:36.350]of you that have put this together today. I hate to have to
- [00:13:40.400]apologize in the middle of my speech, but I'm a little
- [00:13:42.620]overbooked today. And as much as I wanted to be here, and I
- [00:13:45.590]made sure I was here, I've got a similar event. And another
- [00:13:48.620]thing I have to go do an Omaha and I just can't do the the
- [00:13:51.680]Star Trek thing and get myself there. And instance, I have
- [00:13:55.130]to actually drive there. So I'm sadly going to have to
- [00:13:58.280]depart after this. But another key part of my job with all
- [00:14:01.550]of you today is to introduce reagent Rob Schafer. Now,
- [00:14:06.110]Robin, just give me a minute, I'm going to talk about you a
- [00:14:08.780]little bit. I've gotten to know the eight elected regions of
- [00:14:13.040]our Board of Regents incredibly well, and how appropriate
- [00:14:16.250]that we have one of our region's that has military services
- [00:14:19.040]background to time UNL graduate 1991 from the University,
- [00:14:23.060]Nebraska Lincoln and the 1996 graduate of the College of Law
- [00:14:26.630]here at Lincoln. Rob has been a tremendous supporter of the
- [00:14:30.380]university 33 years plus, in the military in the army in the
- [00:14:35.030]National Guard. He's a staff judge advocate. He does lawyer
- [00:14:39.590]work in his regular day job. He's from the beautiful town of
- [00:14:43.340]Beatrice, which I've learned nothing is sounded out like
- [00:14:46.550]it's spelled in Nebraska. I've started to figure all that
- [00:14:49.310]out. But I've really come to know and respect Rob for
- [00:14:53.420]everything he does. So please welcome Regent Robert Shafer.
- [00:15:07.460]Thank you, President Carter. And thank you for everyone
- [00:15:11.420]coming here today for this special time in this tribute as
- [00:15:14.630]we kick off this next year's project. I'm honored to be here
- [00:15:19.430]on behalf of the Board of Regents. And I know I speak for my
- [00:15:22.340]colleagues on the board, when I say that this project would
- [00:15:26.510]not be completed without their support, and in your support
- [00:15:31.520]in being here today. So although I'm the only one here
- [00:15:34.520]representing the board, please, they share their their
- [00:15:37.850]appreciation with all of you today for being here, and to
- [00:15:41.600]Chancellor Green and Michelle for kick jumpstarting this
- [00:15:45.110]project, just a great honor to be a part of the team. Here
- [00:15:50.060]today and part of the team that helped design this this
- [00:15:52.730]special tribute. Our goal was to show that the military is a
- [00:15:57.620]family and to all those who have served, they know that they
- [00:16:01.280]belong to a cause greater than themselves. We hope that the
- [00:16:04.880]design of this tribute sends a special message of unity that
- [00:16:09.260]reflects the many aspects of everyone's service to their
- [00:16:12.620]nation, including those that made the ultimate sacrifice of
- [00:16:16.430]their life in protec. In particular, we wanted to make
- [00:16:20.810]certain that this space is a place for reflection, and
- [00:16:24.110]remembrance for all Nebraskans whether you served or not. We
- [00:16:29.180]want all Nebraskans to be able to come here and spend time
- [00:16:32.510]in to have a special moment for quiet reflection to give
- [00:16:36.680]thanks for those who have served, as well as their family
- [00:16:39.530]members. As someone who has served. This is a special
- [00:16:44.840]project that is significant, significant not only for me,
- [00:16:49.220]but for my family members as well who have served, as well
- [00:16:52.220]as for each of you in your family members who have served.
- [00:16:55.580]What a special thing to have here at the University of
- [00:16:58.190]Nebraska. This effort sends a message that we at the
- [00:17:02.180]university support our veterans, and with that we recognize
- [00:17:06.590]their sacrifices and their family sacrifices. And that we
- [00:17:11.030]will now have a permanent space here on this campus that
- [00:17:15.230]will memorialize their service. As President Carter said, We
- [00:17:20.060]want Nebraska to be the best state for welcoming and
- [00:17:23.540]honoring our veterans and members of our nation's military.
- [00:17:29.030]It's an honor to be a part of a university that is so
- [00:17:31.760]proactive, and vocal about celebrating our military members
- [00:17:37.490]and veterans service. add my thanks to those who have
- [00:17:41.450]committed time, energy and resources toward this project.
- [00:17:46.760]This space will be a jewel on our campus. And it is truly a
- [00:17:50.210]pleasure to be a part of the team that is bringing this
- [00:17:52.880]forward. With that, again, my gratitude, and thanks to all
- [00:17:57.860]of you today, just like green.
- [00:18:07.880]Well, thank you very much Regent Schafer and President
- [00:18:11.000]Carter and he has had to get to Omaha, we've got the same
- [00:18:14.030]event we'd run into as well tonight. Rob, thank you for your
- [00:18:19.670]leadership, because you've not only been a leader as a board
- [00:18:24.320]member here, but you've been a thought leader on this
- [00:18:27.020]project for us, too. And thank you for that. And I should
- [00:18:30.740]mention, I just got the word that Rob's family just made a
- [00:18:34.130]gift to this. So that I know you don't may not want me to
- [00:18:36.920]say that. But thank you, thank you on on behalf of the
- [00:18:40.010]university. for that. I now have the pleasure of introducing
- [00:18:45.500]not only an established leader here in our state, but also
- [00:18:49.550]someone who I've come to count as a personal friend will now
- [00:18:53.510]hear from from Daryl Bohac, Major General Daryl Bohac, who
- [00:18:59.570]serves as the Adjutant General Nebraska National Guard, and
- [00:19:03.410]leads that effort for us here at the State please join me in
- [00:19:06.680]welcoming Daryl Bohac.
- [00:19:16.440]Well, the good thing about going the at least the third
- [00:19:19.200]speaker in a row is you have less to say and that's okay.
- [00:19:22.080]Today I the for me personally being a three time alumnus of
- [00:19:26.910]the University. And sometimes you have to leave to
- [00:19:29.160]appreciate what you've experienced here. And to appreciate
- [00:19:33.240]the environment that we're in. And not only this Veterans
- [00:19:36.060]tribute, not that label was deliberately chosen not to talk
- [00:19:40.680]about a memorial as much as a tribute to service. And I
- [00:19:45.420]think that's a really important distinction about what's
- [00:19:48.210]going to be created by the university here. The other thing
- [00:19:52.350]that I really value about the project is that it's not just
- [00:19:57.720]a place to come and remember and reflect as regent Schaefer
- [00:20:01.860]talked about, but also a place to learn a place that
- [00:20:05.790]reflects the university's mission about teaching and
- [00:20:08.790]exposing all of us to different ideas and ways of viewing
- [00:20:13.140]military service to include family service. So I placed
- [00:20:17.040]great value on that. And I'm proud to be a part of this
- [00:20:20.580]project. I look forward to the day in 2022. When we actually
- [00:20:25.140]dedicate this and to have it standing up, I think you'll be
- [00:20:28.650]amazed the, quite frankly, the renderings don't quite do it
- [00:20:32.490]justice. I don't think for what we're about to experience,
- [00:20:35.490]equally proud of my university, equally proud of my state,
- [00:20:39.150]and grateful to be a member of the committee that's helping
- [00:20:41.730]bring this into fruition. Ronnie, thank you so much.
- [00:20:51.140]Thank you, Darrell, thank you for your leadership. We now I
- [00:20:54.200]want to hear from one of our students. So I would like now
- [00:20:57.650]to welcome Margaret Parker UNL, Army ROTC, and a senior here
- [00:21:03.920]at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln studying nursing in
- [00:21:07.340]the UNMC College of Nursing division on the Lincoln campus.
- [00:21:10.370]Margaret, welcome.
- [00:21:20.450]Good afternoon. Thank you, Chancellor Green for the
- [00:21:22.940]introduction. First of all, I want to say how thankful I am
- [00:21:26.540]to be here today and be able to be part of a program, the US
- [00:21:31.490]Army ROTC and also to be preparing in my short amount of
- [00:21:36.950]school I have left to be an Army nurse. So I'm honored to
- [00:21:41.630]speak to you today and reflect on what this tribute means to
- [00:21:45.260]the ROTC program as a whole, as well as the significance
- [00:21:49.250]that I find it to have personally. For the program. This
- [00:21:53.570]memorial is significant because it causes us to reflect on
- [00:21:57.500]the past, and those that came before us. This is a vital
- [00:22:01.190]part of being a cadet. In the Army Cadet creed, we recite
- [00:22:05.780]that I am the past the spirit of the warriors who made the
- [00:22:09.650]final sacrifice. I'm the present. The scholar and apprentice
- [00:22:14.150]soldier enhancing my skills in the science of warfare, and
- [00:22:17.210]the art of leadership. But above all, I am the future, the
- [00:22:21.320]future warrior leader of the United States Army, may God
- [00:22:24.650]give me the compassion and judgment to lead and the
- [00:22:27.170]gallantry in the battle to win. In order to be six
- [00:22:30.980]successful leaders, this is necessary to do we have to keep
- [00:22:34.790]our we must keep these things in mind. And I can't think of
- [00:22:38.600]a better way to remember the warriors of those who have made
- [00:22:42.650]this final sacrifice along with current members to the
- [00:22:45.680]service and their families than to have a visceral reminder
- [00:22:48.800]of this displayed in front of our building. This project I
- [00:22:52.760]find to be significant to myself as well. So I'd like to
- [00:22:56.150]take this opportunity to thank my favorite veteran, my
- [00:22:59.510]grandpa Richard spheric, who served in World War Two in the
- [00:23:04.130]Navy. And he just celebrated his 96th birthday this past
- [00:23:08.510]month. And he couldn't make it today. But I know he's
- [00:23:10.970]watching online. So I just like to thank him as I have this
- [00:23:15.020]opportunity. And as well as the purpose of honoring this
- [00:23:18.440]nation's veterans, servicemembers and their families. I have
- [00:23:22.520]great hopes of the impact of this tribute, that we would not
- [00:23:26.270]only learn from the past, but they would reflect on what
- [00:23:30.290]this really means. Reflect on what it means to be selfless,
- [00:23:35.450]to be a servant, and to lay one's life down for the sake of
- [00:23:39.470]others. I hope that this tribute will make every Nebraskan
- [00:23:43.550]who comes to this area reflect on the impact of sacrificial
- [00:23:47.360]service. Those with military experience no sacrifice very
- [00:23:51.950]well. And that's why it's one of the words that has been
- [00:23:54.800]decided to be inscribed on the steps, Soldier sacrifice many
- [00:23:59.240]things including their comfort and even their lives, and
- [00:24:02.450]their sacrifice that comes every day for the family of those
- [00:24:05.300]members. In the midst of a self consumed society, I hope
- [00:24:09.890]that this memorial will will spur us on to serve us or
- [00:24:12.770]others to commit to a purpose greater than ourselves and to
- [00:24:17.030]reflect on the significance and meanings of the ultimate
- [00:24:20.870]sacrifice. Thank you.
- [00:24:34.250]Very well said Margaret and happy birthday to grandpa. And
- [00:24:37.820]everybody say happy birthday, grandpa. Yes. Now just a one.
- [00:24:45.050]One final word. Before we bring up our final speaker. You've
- [00:24:48.110]heard some reference to President Carter made reference to
- [00:24:53.030]additional resources coming into the support of this
- [00:24:56.660]facility. So today while we're talking about The Veterans
- [00:25:00.980]tribute on the outside of the facility here in the entrance
- [00:25:04.970]redo of the entrance that you see on the screens before you.
- [00:25:09.500]The Board of Regents also is considering at its December
- [00:25:12.980]meeting coming up here shortly $10 million of renovations
- [00:25:18.260]for this facility itself. And we're very, very happy about
- [00:25:22.250]that.
- [00:25:27.730]As, as many of you will probably understand really well,
- [00:25:31.210]when I say this, we finally will not have air conditioner
- [00:25:34.300]units hanging out of the windows of Pershing. So that will
- [00:25:37.990]be a wonderful day, you know, when we see that. Our final
- [00:25:42.370]speaker today is Nate Perry, the project manager and UNL
- [00:25:46.630]facilities for planning and capital programs and responsible
- [00:25:51.250]with this project, he will describe the development of the
- [00:25:54.160]design, and the upcoming timeline for the project, Nate.
- [00:26:05.790]Thanks Chancellor Green, kinda like general accetta. It's
- [00:26:08.790]not much to say everyone's kind of taken all the stuff
- [00:26:11.220]there. So it's good. It's good. I'm excited. I appreciate
- [00:26:13.950]the invitation today to join in the celebration. I know it's
- [00:26:17.580]been long anticipated, and I'm anxious to be part of it to
- [00:26:20.970]get under construction here. I joined the team when design
- [00:26:23.970]started back in early 2020. Unfortunately, at that same time
- [00:26:27.060]as when COVID happens. So as we're getting ready to ramp up
- [00:26:30.360]on design, kind of had to take a step back. But we're
- [00:26:33.450]finally in the final homestretch of design. Excited about
- [00:26:37.680]getting started, you may have noticed outside that kind of
- [00:26:40.440]got utility work starting excitement is building and we were
- [00:26:43.800]getting contractors on board. We're in the process of
- [00:26:46.620]selecting a construction manager to help us with that
- [00:26:48.900]construction, through the winter and the spring and early
- [00:26:51.930]summer. And we're really excited to do this. And as
- [00:26:55.500]Chancellor green had mentioned, also, in conjunction with
- [00:26:58.500]that, working on the improvements to this building, will
- [00:27:02.400]just do a great service to the ROTC program that's well
- [00:27:05.730]overdue. As far as the design of the project itself, it's
- [00:27:09.720]kind of broken into the different areas that have been
- [00:27:12.150]discussed here, we've got the glass tribute area, as has
- [00:27:15.660]been mentioned, it's kind of the more reserved, quiet area
- [00:27:19.680]for folks to be able to go and read and reflect. But as
- [00:27:23.820]mentioned before, we also don't want this just to be a
- [00:27:25.740]solemn tribute. We want it to be life and also include
- [00:27:33.030]people from all around the campus community, and the
- [00:27:35.730]veterans community in those your community all around. So we
- [00:27:38.220]also have a flag plaza. We're also improving the entrance to
- [00:27:41.460]this building here to provide a more welcoming and more
- [00:27:44.580]accessible environment for folks to come in and enjoy the
- [00:27:48.540]programs that are available here at the university. A lot of
- [00:27:53.670]the design has been a little bit slower than anticipated.
- [00:27:56.340]But a lot of that's done with intentionality has been
- [00:27:58.410]mentioned, there's a lot of details in there that we want to
- [00:28:01.410]make sure we get right. There's a lot of symbolism that goes
- [00:28:03.780]in with serving the military, we wanted to make sure that we
- [00:28:06.060]get that right. Some of the things as even the chevron
- [00:28:09.090]patterns that are shown in some of the renderings that have
- [00:28:11.070]been going around just a key element that's been throughout
- [00:28:15.510]the military community, you'll see some of the words shown
- [00:28:18.420]on the stairs, but also be shown throughout the glass
- [00:28:21.510]tribute of some of the words that have been determined
- [00:28:25.740]through our process with different committees and members of
- [00:28:28.980]the community of what it really means to serve or to be a
- [00:28:31.980]family member of someone who has served with camaraderie,
- [00:28:34.920]service sacrifice, you'll see those kind of strewn
- [00:28:37.350]throughout the design there. So the intent is to really
- [00:28:40.200]capture that whole body of what it means to serve or to be a
- [00:28:44.760]member of someone who's a family member or someone who
- [00:28:46.740]serves. So like I said, extremely excited to get started on
- [00:28:50.670]construction. We're going to push through as we can with
- [00:28:54.150]weather and everything. And we hope to bring this through in
- [00:28:57.870]another or late spring early summer, and can't wait to have
- [00:29:01.110]that dedication at that point. So thanks.
- [00:29:12.480]Thank you. One of the oldest and most solid military
- [00:29:17.070]traditions is to honor our flag. In preparation for the new
- [00:29:21.360]construction, we retired the colors on the flag plaza last
- [00:29:25.650]week and filmed it with the participation of our ROTC
- [00:29:29.490]midshipmen and cadets performing this sacred duty.
- [00:29:33.750]Traditionally, aboard military installations Reveille, is
- [00:29:37.470]sounded for morning colors as the flag raises for the day.
- [00:29:42.300]Retreat is sounded in the evening, as the colors are lowered
- [00:29:46.080]for the day. During these times it is custom, it is
- [00:29:49.830]customary that all military personnel stand at attention and
- [00:29:54.150]render a salute to honor our great nation. Following the
- [00:29:58.470]video that you're going to see here, I will receive the flag
- [00:30:02.730]from Midshipman Cohan Bono. I ask that all of you please
- [00:30:07.200]rise if you are able as we pay our respects to our flag,
- [00:30:11.880]each other and our nation. Please turn your attention to the
- [00:30:15.660]video, please rise .
- [00:30:21.990]Present up.
- [00:32:05.880]March. Left, right.
- [00:33:20.890]Please be seated.
- [00:33:27.100]Thank you to our guest speakers today and to the midshipmen
- [00:33:30.220]and the cadets that participated in today's ceremonies. We
- [00:33:33.250]are so immensely proud of our ROTC students in the
- [00:33:37.600]leadership of our ROTC programs here at the University of
- [00:33:41.470]Nebraska–Lincoln. We do have a gift for each of you, a pen
- [00:33:46.330]that is handcrafted with pride by a US military veteran at
- [00:33:50.890]Nebraska Innovation Studio's, veterans in recovery program
- [00:33:55.930]that is privately funded and open to all veterans
- [00:33:59.650]participating in the Veterans Administration, whole health
- [00:34:02.980]and veterans and recovery programs. Very special program
- [00:34:07.090]that's part of Innovation Studio at Nebraska Innovation
- [00:34:10.270]Campus. I invite all of you back. As you heard earlier in
- [00:34:15.910]the spring, we're going to call it early summer of 2022 for
- [00:34:20.410]the unveiling of what will be a wonderful tribute. And when
- [00:34:23.920]we raised the colors on the new flag that is on the plaza.
- [00:34:29.020]This concludes our event. Again, thank you to all of your
- [00:34:32.230]for your support of the university. We look forward to a won
- [00:34:35.200]erful new tribute here in just a number of months aroun
- [00:34:38.470]the corner. Thank you for being here today.
