- [00:00:00.320]We are back,
- [00:00:01.153]it's halftime of the Huskers matchup today
- [00:00:02.340]with the Buckeyes of Ohio State.
- [00:00:03.860]Back-to-back home games for the big red,
- [00:00:05.730]and as we do each and,
- [00:00:06.760]every week a chance to catch up with the President
- [00:00:08.670]of the University of Nebraska, Ted Carter.
- [00:00:11.370]Well, last week was a home game with Purdue.
- [00:00:13.250]We thought we had it, we were talking at halftime,
- [00:00:15.220]we had the lead,
- [00:00:16.053]but just couldn't hang on,
- [00:00:17.210]those turnovers a little bit too much to overcome.
- [00:00:19.360]Yeah, disappointing, you know.
- [00:00:21.690]We know what a great team we have.
- [00:00:23.080]We've got a great coach,
- [00:00:25.350]you know we are just not getting the outcome we wanted.
- [00:00:27.610]And you know, but you know think about this weekend,
- [00:00:30.210]what an opportunity.
- [00:00:31.220]I mean, we've had a really tough schedule this year.
- [00:00:32.900]Nobody can argue that,
- [00:00:34.430]but to play another top five team
- [00:00:36.450]and a great team like Ohio State at home.
- [00:00:39.620]We have shown that we can play
- [00:00:40.980]up to the best teams in the country.
- [00:00:42.450]So, you know this is a chance for us to really,
- [00:00:45.020]really show ourselves this weekend.
- [00:00:46.380]I'm really excited about this game.
- [00:00:48.220]President, today is Military Appreciation
- [00:00:51.180]game here for Nebraska
- [00:00:52.710]and next Thursday is actually Veterans Day.
- [00:00:54.610]We are so thankful for the men and women who serve
- [00:00:57.590]our country and keep our country safe.
- [00:01:00.120]I know you probably have
- [00:01:01.320]a lot of thoughts running through your head about this.
- [00:01:04.120]Yeah, on this day,
- [00:01:05.150]I mostly think about the men and women
- [00:01:07.650]that are out there on the front lines,
- [00:01:08.960]whether they're out at sea,
- [00:01:10.440]serving in a foreign nation,
- [00:01:12.600]serving in conflict zones
- [00:01:14.486]that support and defend our freedom.
- [00:01:17.030]And I'm also thinking about those that serve our country
- [00:01:19.790]that are from our great state of Nebraska.
- [00:01:22.210]You know, a lot of them might be watching
- [00:01:23.940]or listening to the game today.
- [00:01:25.200]It's a taste of home.
- [00:01:26.240]It's what brings them back to their home state.
- [00:01:28.070]Maybe they're listening to it on the Armed Forces Radio,
- [00:01:30.270]or television network.
- [00:01:31.920]So really, thankful for those that volunteered
- [00:01:35.600]and stand up and take that oath
- [00:01:37.600]to defend everything that we hold dear.
- [00:01:39.760]I know our university is working hard
- [00:01:41.230]to serve the veterans across all four of our campuses.
- [00:01:44.580]Can you tell us more about how the university supports
- [00:01:47.150]military learners and their families as well?
- [00:01:49.619]Yeah, we are so supportive
- [00:01:51.310]of our active duty and military veterans.
- [00:01:54.130]A lot of our fans may not know that
- [00:01:55.800]our University of Nebraska at Omaha
- [00:01:57.270]has been recognized almost every year
- [00:01:59.510]in the last five years for their work
- [00:02:01.470]in supporting military and veteran students.
- [00:02:03.350]They were named the number one school best for vets,
- [00:02:06.550]university by Military Times.
- [00:02:07.990]And that's happened more than once.
- [00:02:09.970]UNL has a very long history going back
- [00:02:12.600]to General John Pershing with their ROTC program,
- [00:02:16.010]a storied program.
- [00:02:16.990]And they do a lot of other things
- [00:02:19.560]like yellow ribbon program,
- [00:02:20.960]which closes the gap
- [00:02:22.920]between in-state tuition and out-of-state tuition.
- [00:02:25.884]UNK has an active army ROTC Program
- [00:02:28.972]and our medical center, a world-class participates
- [00:02:31.980]in military focus programs,
- [00:02:33.350]such as physician assistant program
- [00:02:36.050]that trains PAs in all branches of the military.
- [00:02:38.870]And finally, our online programs,
- [00:02:40.530]which a lot of our military veterans
- [00:02:42.110]and active duty sailors and soldiers,
- [00:02:44.420]and airmen and Marines and guardsmen,
- [00:02:47.160]participating allows military and veteran students
- [00:02:50.340]to continue their education wherever they are.
- [00:02:53.030]I understand that there is a defense-related
- [00:02:55.360]think-tank at the university that supports
- [00:02:57.470]the Department of Defense.
- [00:02:58.850]That's pretty exciting to know
- [00:02:59.870]that Nebraska is engaged in working with the military,
- [00:03:02.710]doing research that protects our war fighters.
- [00:03:05.800]Tell us more about the research that we're doing
- [00:03:07.610]with the military and other federal agencies.
- [00:03:09.810]Well, I love talking about one of our top institutes
- [00:03:12.420]here at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:03:13.810]The National Strategic Research Institute
- [00:03:16.800]engage in the front lines,
- [00:03:18.450]when it comes to protecting our war fighters,
- [00:03:20.630]making sure more of our men and women come home safely.
- [00:03:23.310]We do a tremendous amount of work
- [00:03:24.570]for the Department of Defense to keep our country safe.
- [00:03:27.890]We've had this national security focus think-tank now
- [00:03:30.990]for just about 10 years
- [00:03:32.837]and the University of Nebraska has also leading experts
- [00:03:36.650]in vaccine development,
- [00:03:37.810]detecting nuclear material,
- [00:03:39.710]the psychology of terrorist networks
- [00:03:42.080]and many other defense related areas.
- [00:03:45.170]We've done everything from
- [00:03:46.410]brief the Pentagon, developed vaccines,
- [00:03:48.450]defend against biological threats.
- [00:03:51.220]We've even worked on better ways
- [00:03:52.590]to strengthen military checkpoints.
- [00:03:54.247]And there's a lot more that we could talk about,
- [00:03:56.490]but I will make these final two points.
- [00:03:59.244]There are 14 university-affiliated research centers
- [00:04:02.530]in the country.
- [00:04:03.640]We are one of them and we're the only one
- [00:04:05.560]that directly supports a combatant command
- [00:04:08.330]like U.S. Strategic Command.
- [00:04:10.030]And we are in incredible company universities like MIT,
- [00:04:13.640]Penn State, Georgia Tech,
- [00:04:14.998]and Johns Hopkins have similar organizations
- [00:04:17.550]that work for either the US Navy or the US Army.
- [00:04:20.180]So we are in elite company there with real impact.
- [00:04:23.910]And finally I mentioned the NCITE, N-C-I-T-E,
- [00:04:27.540]the National Counter terrorism Innovation Technology
- [00:04:30.320]and Education Center of Excellence
- [00:04:33.050]that is at UNO.
- [00:04:34.640]And they were picked across many many other universities
- [00:04:37.380]to include the University of Maryland
- [00:04:39.080]by the Department of Homeland Security
- [00:04:41.310]to do work on research and operations and counter terrorism
- [00:04:45.270]to protect our country.
- [00:04:46.210]It's something all Nebraskans
- [00:04:47.320]can be extremely proud of.
- [00:04:49.130]U.S. Strategic Command, located right here in Nebraska,
- [00:04:52.280]off an Air Force Base up just south of Omaha.
- [00:04:54.460]Can you tell us about the university's relationship
- [00:04:57.020]with U.S. STRATCOM,
- [00:04:58.030]and how much we work together with them?
- [00:05:00.560]Yeah, we do.
- [00:05:01.393]And we continue to do that.
- [00:05:02.850]In fact, Admiral Richard is here at the game today
- [00:05:05.600]as some other of our senior leaders
- [00:05:07.730]at U.S. Strategic Command.
- [00:05:08.770]We're really proud of that partnership,
- [00:05:10.690]but they look to us to help develop academic curriculum
- [00:05:13.630]for things like a space law program.
- [00:05:17.230]One of the most unique academic disciplines in the country
- [00:05:20.280]to help support the needs of our military.
- [00:05:22.650]There are many other examples,
- [00:05:24.720]working on nuclear command and control
- [00:05:26.330]and communication research,
- [00:05:28.450]and ideas to help build the future communications network
- [00:05:32.550]for that, and very important military discipline.
- [00:05:35.290]So we'll continue to work with them.
- [00:05:37.170]We're really proud to be neighbors with them.
- [00:05:39.227]And it's really exciting to be connected,
- [00:05:42.150]especially as a former military guy, as myself.
- [00:05:44.470]I would be remissed
- [00:05:45.310]if I didn't thank you for your service,
- [00:05:47.080]you spent most of your life as a member of the military.
- [00:05:49.670]You're a veteran, served our country for several decades.
- [00:05:52.850]What did that experience do for you and your life,
- [00:05:55.000]and how has that maybe helped you
- [00:05:56.110]in a day-to-day role here at Nebraska?
- [00:05:58.810]I would say the first thing
- [00:05:59.870]is what the military gave me
- [00:06:02.260]that I still like to bring here is a society of teamwork.
- [00:06:05.700]Nobody does anything completely by themselves.
- [00:06:08.597]My military experience also taught me to be a good listener,
- [00:06:11.910]to listen to the sailors and the Marines that worked for me.
- [00:06:15.270]They often had the best idea
- [00:06:18.980]and I got that from them.
- [00:06:20.310]And then I also learned the idea of how to work together
- [00:06:23.330]on a team to do military style planning,
- [00:06:26.160]to solve some of the most complex problems.
- [00:06:27.900]And as you and I have talked about before,
- [00:06:29.920]we're still living
- [00:06:30.753]through some of those most complex problems,
- [00:06:32.490]especially when it comes to COVID-19 and other challenges.
- [00:06:34.960]So, I'm proud of my military service
- [00:06:38.000]and I'm really happy to work
- [00:06:39.210]with the great teammates here in the state of Nebraska.
- [00:06:42.760]Again, thank you for your service,
- [00:06:43.720]enjoy the second half.
- [00:06:45.110]All right, thanks Greg.
- [00:06:45.960]There he is, Ted Carter,
- [00:06:46.793]President of the University of Nebraska,
- [00:06:47.626]with us here at halftime.
- [00:06:48.570]We've got more, coming up next.
